UM entered the Indian market more than 2 years back and has made its presence felt in the affordable cruiser segment. We spoke to Rajeev Mishra, the CEO of UM Lohia Two Wheelers Pvt. Rajeev Mishra: I think we have gained a lot of ground and yes, as a start-up there are many issues which come up. One of them is that a new company faces the problem of localisation. Skoda Auto India Pvt Ltd (SAIPL) will soon present a plan to parent company Volkswagen that proposes launching six new cars in India. These will include the much awaited Maruti Swift-rivaling new-age VW Polo and a Hyundai Creta-rivaling SUV. It may be noted here that the parent company has assigned Skoda Auto India with the task to handle product development for both Volkswagen and Skoda in India. As per a recent report, Skoda Auto India has been pretty bullish with developing new strategies and are now looking to get a go-ahead from the parent company to launch as many as six new Skoda and Volkswagen cars in India. Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd (SMIPL) unveiled the Burgman Street 125 automatic scooter at the Auto Expo 2018. A new report reveals that this scooter will launch in late-May or early-June this year. Until now, it was being speculated that the Burgman would launch in the current month. However, with only a few days of this month left, there is absolutely no sign of the new offering. Hence, it looks like the latest claim of a May/June launch holds at least some truth. The Burgman Street 125 will be India’s first maxi-scooter. The upcoming scooter will have to rival the likes of TVS NTorq and Aprilia SR 125 in terms of pricing. Internationally, the Burgman is available with bigger engines. While the 125cc motor of the India-spec scooter will be far less powerful than its international counterparts, the scooter will have similar dimensions. Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd (SMIPL) has launched the Suzuki GSX-S750 in the country at an ex-showroom, New Delhi price of INR 7,45,000. The Suzuki GSX-S750 is the brand’s first sub-1,000 cc big-bike in the country, and is the second CKD product after the Hayabusa. The Japanese brand showcased the motorcycle at the 2018 Auto Expo in February. Featuring a chiselled fuel tank, vented front fender, light rear fender, moulded mirrors, and angular tail section with integrated LED taillight, the bike bears the moniker ‘Apex Predator’. Volkswagen India has commenced production of the Passat in India, which will be launched in the final quarter of 2017. VW sold the sixth and seventh generation models in India before it was dropped from their lineup in December 2013. Eicher Motors Limited (EML) has announced today that its joint venture with US-based Polaris Industries Inc, Eicher Polaris Private Limited (EPPL) will close operations in India. The decision was taken by the board of directors of Eicher Polaris Private Limited on March 9, 2018, after passing a resolution to close operations with immediate effect. The reason cited behind this shutdown has been the dismal sales performance of the brand's only offering in the country, the Multix. The Multix was launched as a personal utility vehicle in 2015, but it reached more parts of the country in BS IV compliant form in 2017. However, the initial interest from customers could not be sustained and the subsequent sales performance was significantly slower than the company's expectations. Eicher Motors has stated that as of December 31, 2017, EML had invested Rs 289.50 crore in EPPL. In the financial year 2016-17, EPPL's net loss amounted to Rs 91.83 crore. Honda 2Wheelers India has announced a new Indian team that will compete in the 2018 Asia Road Racing Championship. The newly formed IDEMITSU Honda Racing India team has been put together with Honda's aim of developing an iconic Indian rider in the two-wheeler racing space. The team, which will be run by T Pro Ten10 Racing, has two Indian riders - Rajiv Sethu and Anish D Shetty. While 2018 is Sethu's second year in the ARRC's Asia Production 250cc class, Shetty is an ARRC rookie. Anish D. Shetty and Rajiv Sethu will compete in the Asia Production 250 class of the 2018 ARRC Sethu and Shetty will compete, as stated earlier, in the Asia Production 250cc class, where they will be up against 23 other Asian riders.
