Candice Williams The Detroit News Published 11:55 PM EST Nov 5, 2018 Detroit — With its industrial environment and gritty charm, the city's Eastern Market neighborhood survived during a time when development was stagnant — even as similar markets in other cities disappeared. Now with development booming in the city and moving outward from the central business district, officials are working on a plan for the neighborhood to keep the core market intact and maintain the area’s identity. The plan comes as at least two new developments are being proposed in the area — a $70 million "gateway" project featuring housing and retail, and a mixed-use development on the site of the former Joe Muer Seafood restaurant on Gratiot. “Our mandate is to try to find ways to preserve and enhance the asset of a neighborhood and make sure that any planning outcome benefits a neighborhood,” said Maurice Cox, the … [Read more...] about Eastern Market looks to keep identity as developments sprout up

It was a good day for more modestly priced machinery at Bonhams’ Amelia Island sale. While Bonhams’ Amelia Island auction didn’t see the same strong sales numbers as Gooding & Company ($35.9 million) or RM Sotheby’s ($27.7 million), the U.K.-based auction house did shift 87% of its Amelia Island inventory to the tune of nearly $13.5 million this past week. Included in the auction was a very original, 7,000-mile 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Targa which brought a world record result of $169,120. Painted to spec and optioned with the M491 “Turbo Look” package that includes Turbo-spec rear fender flares, the 3.2 Targa is certainly one of the most original and interesting of those extant. But don’t be mistaken, this is an anomaly for an exceptional car, rather than a market trend. Luckily for the non-1-percenters in the room, Bonhams had a large selection of cars that sold for well under the $100,000 mark, making it an inviting sale for those … [Read more...] about Bonhams Gets World Record $169,120 for 1989 Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Targa

It finally happened, the semi-satirical 24 Hours of Lemons, a “racing” series for “cars” that cost less than $500, used to be funded by the entry fees of starry eyed racer-wannabes… and by the bribes paid to their scrutineers, including Lemons chief justice and Autoweek regular Murilee Martin. It was a simpler time back then. No one had any money and every performance part was made of either PVC pipe or of something someone found in the backyard under a tarp. But not anymore. Now the 24 Hours of LeMons has a sponsor. Sure, it’s just a tire sponsor, but this is the start of the slippery slope where race winners will thank Wonder Bread and Pepsi instead of doing something crude but humorous on the victory podium.Yokohama, a perfectly legitimate tire company, has become the official tire sponsor of the 24 Hours of LeMons.“Imperiling decades of customer trust and the goodwill of countless race victories, Yokohama has just become the … [Read more...] about 24 Hours of LeMons sells out to the man!
Volkswagen is sponsoring this weekend’s Liqui Moly Bathurst 12-Hour, which is one of Australia’s long standing motorsport endurance races. As part of its sponsorship of the Bathurst 12-Hour, Volkswagen's 165kW/550Nm V6 Amarok will serve as the official recovery vehicle of the race. The brand will also bring its track-ready Amarok V6 known as “The Big Bad Wolf” built by local Volkswagen Australia apprentices. It will perform a number of high-speed laps on February 2. It will be on display at the Volkswagen stand in merchandise alley as well as taking part in a number of fan experiences throughout the race weekend.
