De Vries admits he didn’t always cope with pressure during his long journey to F1 · RaceFans

February 1, 2023 by www.racefans.net Leave a Comment

Nyck de Vries , who will make his debut as a full-time Formula 1 driver with AlphaTauri this year, says he almost gave up on his dream of reaching the series during his climb through the lower categories – and suffered from the pressure to deliver at times. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Seven years ago a disappointing season in GP3 threatened to thwart De Vries’ attempts to reach F1. Although he eventually secured a seat in Formula 2, he faced further setbacks in his second year in the category when he joined the reigning champions. De Vries arrives in F1 this season four years after taking the F2 title, having also raced successfully in Formula E, where he won the 2020-21 championship. However it means he faces the unusual situation of making his F1 debut while being older than more than half of the rivals he will go up against in Bahrain next month. “I’m one of the older guys, so I’ve walked quite a long journey to get here,” he said in an interview … [Read more...] about De Vries admits he didn’t always cope with pressure during his long journey to F1 · RaceFans

2013 F1 driver market: Hamilton linked to Mercedes – F1 Fanatic

September 12, 2012 by www.racefans.net Leave a Comment

Lewis Hamilton’s rumoured move to Mercedes could have a seismic effect on the 2013 driver market by opening up a seat at the team with the fastest car in F1 at the moment. Hamilton to Mercedes? A contract extension for Lewis Hamilton with McLaren looked like a formality after Mark Webber re-signed for Red Bull in July. That meant there was no longer any room for him with last year’s world champions. And it seemed unlikely Fernando Alonso would welcome him at Ferrari, despite his protestations to the contrary . But, despite Hamilton saying he “didn’t see many problems” in arranging a new contract, weeks passed and no new deal was announced. Then last week the BBC ran a story claiming Hamilton was Mercedes-bound for 2013. McLaren were quick to deny the claim . But Ross Brawn leant legitimacy to the view that Hamilton might join his team when he said that top drivers would be well-advised to align themselves to manufacturer teams in time for the new 2014 engine … [Read more...] about 2013 F1 driver market: Hamilton linked to Mercedes – F1 Fanatic

How Alpine plans to take the next step in F1 2023

January 24, 2023 by www.motorsport.com Leave a Comment

Listen to this article The A522 car was by no means the fastest of the chasing pack every weekend, but it was on many occasions, showing particularly well at high-efficiency tracks, and in low-speed corners. In the end, it proved just good enough to outscore the competition. After three successive years in fifth place under the Renault and Alpine names, the Enstone outfit moved up to fourth, ahead of close rivals McLaren . The team also scored 173 points, 18 more than over the same total of 22 races held the previous year. That represents progress, but perhaps with an asterisk applied. After all, the team was also fourth back in 2018, and in 2020 it scored more points than in 2022 in fewer races, and with no sprint events contributing to the total. However, for those on the fringes of the top six, the overall points total can be a misleading statistic. One or two high attrition races in a year can gift high-value podium finishes, or even a win as was the case with … [Read more...] about How Alpine plans to take the next step in F1 2023

2012 F1 Driver Rankings part two: 14-6 · RaceFans

The 2012 driver rankings continue with part two, which take us up to the top five. 14. Felipe Massa Beat team mate in qualifying 2/20 Beat team mate in race 0/17 Races finished 19/20 Laps spent ahead of team mate 70/1081 Halfway through the season Massa appeared at number 22 in these rankings, so 14th represents a significant gain following his disastrous first half of the season. Massa never mastered the F2012 when it was at its worst the way Alonso did. In Malaysia he dropped back from his team mate at a rate of over two seconds per lap and was almost lapped by him at the end. In Spain, as in Malaysia, the next car behind him at the finish was a Caterham. As the Ferrari improved Massa made faltering progress. There were still wasted races in Canada (spin), Germany (went off during qualifying) and Singapore (collided with the other Caterham). While Alonso only failed to reach Q3 twice, Massa missed out in half of the races. But there were also … [Read more...] about 2012 F1 Driver Rankings part two: 14-6 · RaceFans

Guenther Steiner’s assessment of new VF-23 livery as Gene Haas reveals F1 2023 target

January 31, 2023 by www.planetf1.com Leave a Comment

With a snazzy 2023 livery, two experienced F1 point-scoring drivers and a new title sponsor, Gene Haas and Guenther Steiner have big ambitions for the new season. The American-backed team unveiled their brand new 2023 livery on January 31, beating the rest of the Formula 1 grid and turning up the pre-season hype with a design that has been met with an overwhelmingly positive response. Looking at front-facing and overhead shots, the red and white of last season remains but other angles reveal a design with far more black than in recent years. Perhaps the most significant change is the introduction of new title sponsor MoneyGram, who have brought a much-needed cash boost to the team. After returning to points-scoring form and earning their first pole position in 2022, team principal Steiner is hoping to take another step into the midfield battle this year with Kevin Magnussen and new signing Nico Hulkenberg spearheading their challenge. The 57-year-old approves of the livery, … [Read more...] about Guenther Steiner’s assessment of new VF-23 livery as Gene Haas reveals F1 2023 target

Listen to this article After Alfa Romeo announced its launch plans last week, Haas became the only F1 team yet to confirm its schedule to reveal its 2023 F1 car. In a social media post, Haas has stated it will uncover its 2023 F1 car livery next Tuesday at 2pm GMT, meaning it will become the first F1 team to run a launch this year, having jumped ahead of Red Bull’s 3 February launch plan. The American team has gained MoneyGram as a new title sponsor , while it has signed Nico Hulkenberg as the new partner to Kevin Magnussen in its driver line-up, having dropped Mick Schumacher at the end of 2022. Schumacher has since joined Mercedes as its reserve driver. On Tuesday Haas announced Pietro Fittipaldi will remain at the team as its official test and reserve driver , having been with the squad since 2019. Haas gave little away in its launch date reveal, aside from confirming it would be a livery unveiling only, meaning the first time the VF-23 will be seen … [Read more...] about Haas announces F1 2023 livery reveal date to complete launch schedule

Steiner: Haas F1 2022 rollercoaster better than “just downs” of ’21

January 30, 2023 by www.motorsport.com Leave a Comment

Listen to this article Haas will unveil the livery for its 2023 car, the VF-23, on Tuesday, and has set its sights on a more consistent and stable season following an eventful 2022 campaign. The team cut ties with driver Nikita Mazepin and title sponsor Uralkali on the eve of the new campaign following Russia's invasion of Ukraine but saw its on-track fortunes take an upturn as it rejoined the midfield fight. While Haas's fluctuating form meant it could only finish eighth in the standings at the end of the season, it enjoyed a late hurrah courtesy of Mazepin's replacement, Kevin Magnussen , in Brazil as he scored the team's first F1 pole. Discussing Haas's up-and-down form in an end-of-season interview, Steiner told Motorsport.com: "If you could have more equal [form], it would be better. But as long as you can have some highs, it's good. "It takes a lot of energy out of you, the ups and downs, because you have got these highs where you are flying, and you've got … [Read more...] about Steiner: Haas F1 2022 rollercoaster better than “just downs” of ’21

2012 F1 Driver Rankings #2: Hamilton · RaceFans

December 14, 2012 by www.racefans.net Leave a Comment

There was very little to separate the top three drivers of 2012 besides the cars they were competing in. Unfortunately for Lewis Hamilton his let him down while he was leading on more than one occasion – and that was just the beginning of his problems. Hamilton’s performances in 2012 were quick and generally error-free – a world away from the troubled racer who often showed up in 2011. However the year began with a missed opportunity in Melbourne. He put the car on pole position but was beaten off the line by his team mate and was unfortunate to slip behind Sebastian Vettel when the safety car came out. Beat team mate in qualifying 16/20 Beat team mate in race 9/13 Races finished 15/20 Laps spent ahead of team mate 638/958 His pole-to-third result was repeated in Malaysia where the team made the first of several errors in the pits, most of which Hamilton bore the brunt of. But he also discovered that the MP4-27, though very quick in the dry, was … [Read more...] about 2012 F1 Driver Rankings #2: Hamilton · RaceFans

The American talent that came close to breaking F1’s US drought · RaceFans

The United States’ long wait for a full-time Formula 1 driver ends this year as Formula 2 graduate Logan Sargeant joins Williams. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free He is one of five drivers to have raced using an American licence in F2 – although one of those was Mexico’s IndyCar star Pato O’Ward – and only the third person from his country in the last 40 years to have come through F1’s support series to make it to F1. So what has stood in the way of the nation’s top junior single-seater talents, particularly those who have raced in Europe or found themselves in contention for an F1 seat, from making it to the world championship? The European road to F1 hits a dead end The infamous 2007 European Grand Prix at the Nurburgring was not only notable for its thrilling battle for victory between Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa, the chaos caused by opening lap rain or Markus Winkelhock leading on his debut. It was also the final race for a full-time American F1 … [Read more...] about The American talent that came close to breaking F1’s US drought · RaceFans
