10 things we learned from the 2023 MotoGP Indian Grand Prix
Months of uncertainty marred the build-up to MotoGP’s inaugural Indian adventure at the Buddh International Circuit, as requested track works had only recently been completed. Homologation was made official only on the Thursday of the grand prix, while the riders had already decided to unite if they felt the safety standards of the venue were not up to scratch. Thankfully, everything went off without too many problems and MotoGP’s first Indian GP was a truly memorable affair. VR46’s Marco Bezzecchi positioned himself as a genuine championship threat with a dominant grand prix victory, while Jorge Martin’s consistency continued. A mistake for championship leader Francesco Bagnaia in Sunday’s race wiped out his championship advantage, bringing to just 13 points as Martin fought through dehydration to finish second. Elsewhere, the Japanese manufacturers put on a strong showing as Fabio Quartararo scored his first grand prix podium since Austin, while Joan Mir ended … [Read more...] about 10 things we learned from the 2023 MotoGP Indian Grand Prix
Qatar is Aiming High as it Prepares to Welcome Back F1
Having successfully hosted MotoGP since 2004, Lusail International Circuit (LIC) was given the opportunity to stage F1 in November 2021 due to several races being lost because of the COVID pandemic. Despite the course and facilities being developed for two-wheel racing, and the race being held at short notice, Qatar put on a great event and earned much praise from drivers and team bosses alike. Now, as LIC prepares to welcome F1 back on the weekend of October 6-8, the circuit’s CEO, Amro Al Hamad, has outlined his ambitions to make the Qatar GP one of the best in the world. He said: “Qatar has a proud record of staging major sporting events and has established itself as an important hub for sport. We always try to set the bar high, and our ambition is to not only be a motorsport leader for the region, but for the world. “We have always been leaders in the field of organization and for hosting huge sports events in Qatar, and this is just a continuation of what we have … [Read more...] about Qatar is Aiming High as it Prepares to Welcome Back F1
What caused Honda’s “mystery” India MotoGP weekend?
For the first time in 2023, both factory Honda riders qualified inside the top six, with Mir fifth and Marc Marquez sixth. Marquez carried this form into Saturday’s sprint, scoring his second podium of the season in third, while in Sunday’s grand prix Mir ended his points drought with a ride to fifth as his team-mate recovered to ninth from an early crash. The stiffer rear tyre casing brought to the Buddh track by Michelin in theory should have hindered Honda, as it has done when used previously this season. But from the off both Mir and Marquez were competitive, maintaining this through every session despite the latter insisting Honda’s initial Friday pace was purely down to top riders adapting quicker to new tracks. Marquez believes Honda’s form at Buddh was strong because the layout is similar in nature to the Circuit of the Americas, where he has dominated at in the past and where Alex Rins secured HRC’s only win of the season in 2023. “Because it’s a very similar … [Read more...] about What caused Honda’s “mystery” India MotoGP weekend?
Ferrari throw the dice with final upgrade of the season at Suzuka
A team under scrutiny, Ferrari have brought what at first glance seems like an unusual rear wing configuration to Suzuka. Having made history last time out in Singapore as the team to end Red Bull’s winning streak, Ferrari are keen to add another win in Japan but will Red Bull return to their recognisable form? Let’s delve into the technical details that might reveal the answer to this question. Suzuka circuit track configuration Suzuka is one of the few “true racing” tracks with a rich history on the calendar. Here, the aerodynamic efficiency of the cars and the skill of the drivers come to the forefront. One of the most significant features of this track is the immense tire wear. Lateral forces are enormous due to the fast corners, which affects the tires, especially rears. For this weekend, Pirelli has prepared the hardest compounds, C1, C2, and C3, for this very reason. Furthermore, it’s important to note that from an aerodynamic perspective, this track is somewhat … [Read more...] about Ferrari throw the dice with final upgrade of the season at Suzuka
10 things we learned from the 2023 F1 Japanese Grand Prix
Max Verstappen and Red Bull winning Formula 1’s 2023 Japanese Grand Prix by a commanding 19.4-second margin might sound a very familiar tale, but this was coming one week on from their shock defeat in the Singapore race. There was therefore plenty of attention being paid to the potential true impact of the twin technical directives now in force covering flexing wings and floors. But Red Bull utterly rebuffed this intrigue with its RB19’s display back at a smooth, sweeping course where the car was designed to thrive. His usual advantage restored, Verstappen was devastatingly good, while team-mate Sergio Perez had another poor weekend. McLaren took up the chase, with Ferrari slipping back to third quickest but showing good progress in an important area. Then there were a few themes of the Singapore weekend cropping up again, plus the latest on Daniel Ricciardo ’s injury recovery, the final moves in the driver market and a bizarre Alpine team orders spat. All that … [Read more...] about 10 things we learned from the 2023 F1 Japanese Grand Prix
‘It doesn’t matter if we start last’: How Red Bull’s junior team aided Honda’s leap forward
AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost has explained the role he played in pushing for Red Bull’s junior outfit to be a powertrain development ground to benefit the senior outfit – though it came at the expense of reliability. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free His team began using Honda power units that year. The Japanese manufacturer had endured three torrid seasons supplying McLaren from 2015 to ‘17, and seen a deal to supply Sauber fall through. Tost’s team, known at the time as Toro Rosso, switched from Renault to Honda engines in 2018. It worked with the Japanese manufacturer to develop the package Red Bull began using the following year. It proved successful and Red Bull driver Max Verstappen went on to win the 2021 title with Honda power. Before agreeing the deal for Toro Rosso to use Honda engines in 2018, Tost said he “simply could not believe that Honda is not able to build a power unit which can win in F1.” “When we decided 2017 to change to … [Read more...] about ‘It doesn’t matter if we start last’: How Red Bull’s junior team aided Honda’s leap forward
Mercedes have “$300 million-worth of equipment Williams doesn’t have”
Williams team principal James Vowles says F1’s budget cap disadvantages smaller teams who lack resources bigger teams already own. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free F1’s financial regulations came into effect at the start of the 2021 season. The rules limit how much teams can spend on their racing activities over the course of a year. The cap was originally set at $145 million (£114 million), with reductions agreed over the following two years. This season, the cap has been reduced to $138.6 million (£109 million). Vowles, who assumed the role of team principal at Williams just prior to the start of the season, previously worked as a strategist at Mercedes during the period where they won all of their eight constructors’ championship titles and seven consecutive drivers’ championships. Speaking to RaceFans, Vowles said the introduction of the financial restrictions was fundamentally positive for all teams. “There’s the operational budget cap, which is the … [Read more...] about Mercedes have “$300 million-worth of equipment Williams doesn’t have”
Prospective F1 team LKYSUNZ secures further funding; vows to pay higher entry fees
Having submitted a formal application to the FIA earlier this year, LKYSUNZ have confirmed they have secured further funding that would allow them to pay higher entry fees. One of the prospective teams to have submitted an application to the FIA during the invitation for entrants to submit their interest, LKYSUNZ, has confirmed that they have secured additional funding. Seeking a position on the F1 grid from 2026, the Asia-based prospect has secured funding from Legends Advocates Sports Group, a US-based sports fund.
