‘Porjai’ speaks your language
The Thai Dialect Artificial Intelligence (AI) model "Porjai" marks a milestone by being the first virtual assistant created for Thai people that uses dialects from across the country. A research team drawn from six leading universities, moreover, has established a joint programme for further AI research in the upcoming academic year. Orathai Sangpetch, vice president of research and strategy at CMKL University -- a collaboration between Carnegie Mellon University and King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang -- said the project acknowledges difficulties Thais have encountered during the pandemic, especially in regard to online shopping platforms. Initially, the "Friends in Need of PA" volunteer foundation helped local sellers in remote areas to offer their products on online platforms, as Covid restrictions had limited close contact between vendors and sellers. Ms Orathai said over time she was reminded of how young children who cannot read still manage to use virtual … [Read more...] about ‘Porjai’ speaks your language
Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo hit by cold wave
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 SAO PAULO (AP) — In Rio de Janeiro, bold swimmers have been discouraged from diving into the cold ocean, while Sao Paulo authorities had to open up subway stations to accommodate homeless people as Brazil's south experienced unusually low temperatures on Friday. Temperatures on Friday morning dropped below 23 Fahrenheit (-5 Celsius) in Santa Catarina state, covering several municipalities with a thin layer of snow. Earlier this week a fierce hailstorm scared residents of Rio's west zone. For many Brazilians, accustomed to more clement weather in the tropical South American country, such events are considered extreme. Earlier this week, authorities in Rio Grande do Sul, canceled soccer matches, closed public buildings early and suspended classes in schools and universities due to fears of major disruptions. There, nearly 182,000 homes were left without … [Read more...] about Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo hit by cold wave
Florida appeals court reinstates DeSantis congressional map
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A new congressional map drawn by Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' staff that could diminish the state's Black representation in Washington was reinstated by an appeals court Friday, a week after a lower court judge said the map was unconstitutional. The 1st District Court of appeals ruled Judge Layne Smith erred when he ordered a replacement map be used for the 2022 election. The latest order means the governor's map is reinstated pending the outcome of a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the map. While the appeals court didn't address the constitutionality of the map, it did cite “the need for certainty and continuity as election season approaches.” The ruling comes as the state gets closer to the June 13 to 17 qualifying period for federal office. The DeSantis map would likely boost the number of Florida seats held by Republicans, while also making it difficult for Democratic U.S. Rep. Al Lawson to maintain his seat in a north Florida … [Read more...] about Florida appeals court reinstates DeSantis congressional map
Alonso slams “incompetent” Miami F1 stewards after penalty
Listen to this article Alonso and his Alpine team were left infuriated by a post-race time addition penalty the double world champion received for cutting the Miami track’s tight chicane during the closing stages of F1’s most recent race. The stewards felt that in doing so Alonso gained a lasting advantage by running off-track, which he disputes. Ahead of this weekend’s Spanish GP, where Alonso was speaking in the pre-practice press conference, Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer had insisted his driver had "lifted twice, significantly" after cutting the Miami chicane while running ahead of Mick Schumacher . The penalty was Alonso’s second of the Miami race after he was also handed a five-second addition for hitting Pierre Gasly , with the second dropping him out of the points having finished eighth on the road. Alpine had already described the second penalty as "wholly unjust" and "difficult to accept" in strong, separate public defences of Alonso from … [Read more...] about Alonso slams “incompetent” Miami F1 stewards after penalty
Red Bull: Any Aston Martin IP transfer would be ‘serious concern’
Red Bull say they have noted the FIA’s Aston Martin statement with interest, but have warned if any transfer of intellectual property had taken place it “would be a serious concern”. Aston Martin became the hot topic of the grid on Friday when they unveiled what they called the B-spec version of the AMR22 ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix. The Silverstone-based team listed eight changes and the final result was a car that looked remarkably similar to Red Bull’s RB18. However, an Aston Martin spokesperson confirmed to PlanetF1 the car had been declared legal by the FIA. “We have shared details of our update with the FIA technical people. Having analysed the data and the processes used to create the update, the FIA has now confirmed in writing that our update was generated as a result of legitimate independent work in accordance with the Technical Regulations,” the spokesperson said. Despite this, Red Bull appear to still not be happy and in their own statement to PlanetF1, … [Read more...] about Red Bull: Any Aston Martin IP transfer would be ‘serious concern’
FIA could train rally co-drivers to become F1 race directors
Listen to this article Race directors have become a hot topic since the controversy of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix last year, which resulted in F1 race director Michael Masi being removed from the role. This season, F1 has been rotating its race director position between Niels Wittich and Eduardo Freitas, who had worked in the role in DTM and the World Endurance Championship respectively. Freitas is set to take over the role at this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix. Speaking on Wednesday night during the World Rally Championship's 50th anniversary gala dinner at Rally Portugal, Ben Sulayem revealed that rally co-drivers could be transformed into race directors in circuit racing, due to the organisational skills and decision-making in high-pressure scenarios required to succeed in rallying. He believes "one hundred percent" that co-drivers who undergo the necessary race director training could rise through the pyramid all the way to F1. "Honestly, we are in a challenge … [Read more...] about FIA could train rally co-drivers to become F1 race directors
Hamilton: ‘Not the quickest but we’re on our way’
Lewis Hamilton said he thought Mercedes were “on their way” following a strong Friday showing from the reigning Constructors’ champions at the Spanish Grand Prix. Mercedes arrived in Barcelona with a car that had four upgrades on it in an attempt to turn the tide on a disastrous 2022 season so far. The team finally seem to have gone some way to solving the porpoising issue that has so far hampered them, and were able to lower the car’s ride height which in turn improved its speed. Speaking after he finished P3 in FP2 with his team-mate George Russell in P2, Hamilton conceded they were still not the quickest but he believed the team were “on our way”. “Super-happy with the progress so a big, big, big, big thank you to everyone back at the factory for not giving up and continuing to push,” Hamilton told reporters post-FP2. “We are not the quickest but I think we’re on our way. “It’s the first time we’ve driven down the straight without bouncing. We still have … [Read more...] about Hamilton: ‘Not the quickest but we’re on our way’
Doohan takes Barcelona pole in tactical F2 qualifying session · RaceFans
Jack Doohan has taken Formula 2 pole in a tactical qualifying session where drivers attempted to predict when grip levels would be at their highest. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Felipe Drugovich had been fastest during the F2 practice session, which was disrupted by two red flags following a crash at turn nine for Olli Caldwell and Marcus Armstrong’s car needing to be retrieved after he spun on – and then off – the track. In qualifying, Liam Lawson, Logan Sargeant and Theo Pourchaire were the first to set times, each improving on the one before for Pourchaire to set a 1’30.083. Marino Sato and Jehan Daruvala then further improved, both into the 1’29s with Daruvala putting together a 1’29.512. Clement Novalak set the second-fastest time. However, puzzlingly, his MP Motorsport team mate Drugovich remained in the pits, without having set a lap, with 22 minutes left in the session. Drugovich still did not go out and was one of four drivers with no time … [Read more...] about Doohan takes Barcelona pole in tactical F2 qualifying session · RaceFans
