Fernando Alonso scored his first win in over a year and Renault’s first win in almost twice that time as the new Singapore circuit created a surprise result. It was an unusual podium featuring Alonso, Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, the latter extending his title lead on a poor day for Ferrari. Felipe Massa failed to score after another disastrous problem during their pit stops, and Kimi Raikkonen crashed late in the race. Mixed fortunes for Alonso Fortunate toyed with Alonso all weekend. He was quickly up to speed on the bumpy Singapore street circuit, fastest in the second and third free practice sessions, and fancied his chances of taking pole position. But a car failure in qualifying left him a wretched 15th – a starting position no driver had ever won a Grand Prix from in the 799 world championship events leading up to this race. It took a strategic gamble and a stroke of fortune to bring him into play on race day. At the start Felipe Massa was quickly down to … [Read more...] about Fernando Alonso’s bad luck turns good for win

10 things we learned from the 2023 F1 Japanese Grand Prix
Max Verstappen and Red Bull winning Formula 1’s 2023 Japanese Grand Prix by a commanding 19.4-second margin might sound a very familiar tale, but this was coming one week on from their shock defeat in the Singapore race. There was therefore plenty of attention being paid to the potential true impact of the twin technical directives now in force covering flexing wings and floors. But Red Bull utterly rebuffed this intrigue with its RB19’s display back at a smooth, sweeping course where the car was designed to thrive. His usual advantage restored, Verstappen was devastatingly good, while team-mate Sergio Perez had another poor weekend. McLaren took up the chase, with Ferrari slipping back to third quickest but showing good progress in an important area. Then there were a few themes of the Singapore weekend cropping up again, plus the latest on Daniel Ricciardo ’s injury recovery, the final moves in the driver market and a bizarre Alpine team orders spat. All that … [Read more...] about 10 things we learned from the 2023 F1 Japanese Grand Prix
The blame game – 2005 United States GP at Indianapolis
INDIANAPOLIS, June 21, 2005 – Let’s pass blame around for this debacle at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in what was intended to be the sixth annual US Grand Prix here. It turned out to be a six-car show with only Michael Schumacher’s intimidation of teammate Rubens Barrichello while exiting the pits from his second stop to excite any one of the remaining fans at the Brickyard. It’s estimated the Speedway had 130,000 on the grounds before 1PM EST but they began filing out shortly after the “start." This “race” was a yawner after all 14 Michelin-shod drivers retired before the official start, completing only their formation lap. All, including polesitter Jarno Trulli went immediately to their garages. Michelin vs Bridgestone Start the blame game with Michelin, who did not fully study the changes to the road-oval circuit after resurfacing and subsequent diamond grooving between the 2004 Brickyard 400 and the Indianapolis 500. In pre-May tire tests, Firestone engineers … [Read more...] about The blame game – 2005 United States GP at Indianapolis
Will Lewis Hamilton’s suspicions about Red Bull’s performance play out?
Lewis Hamilton believes that should Red Bull fail to dominate in Japan, then ‘something is up’ with the RB19… After spending the season watching on as Red Bull claimed win after win, the sudden halt to their dominance at last weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix has raised eyebrows up and down the grid, as it coincided with the introduction of a Technical Directive from the FIA. But Singapore’s idiosyncratic layout and demands mean it’s possible that Red Bull were simply caught out by not getting their car into the right window – an excuse they can’t lean on this weekend at Suzuka. Why might Red Bull have struggled in Singapore? Right from the get-go on Friday in Singapore, it was evident that the RB19 wasn’t in a particularly happy place. Both Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez struggled throughout the weekend, particularly for single-lap pace. Added to their woes were some operational blunders that resulted in Verstappen being involved in multiple investigations after qualifying – … [Read more...] about Will Lewis Hamilton’s suspicions about Red Bull’s performance play out?
Ferrari resurgence continues but Perez must find 16kph to match Verstappen
Just five days after failing to win a grand prix for the first time in 2023 following a weekend in Singapore where they were far from being the best team, Red Bull arrived in Japan eager to seize back the narrative and remind everyone they are the team to beat every weekend at every circuit. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Last time out, the signs of trouble were there for Red Bull from the start. Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez ended the first day of running outside the top six, around seven tenths of a second off the pace of the Ferraris. It was Red Bull’s worst Friday of the season so far, which, in many ways, speaks to the relentless speed and consistency they have otherwise enjoyed through the year. But in the space of two hours of running on Friday, Red Bull appear to have snuffed out their rivals’ hopes that Singapore slump would carry over to Suzuka. Verstappen ended the first day in Japan over three tenths of a second faster than Charles Leclerc … [Read more...] about Ferrari resurgence continues but Perez must find 16kph to match Verstappen
Gasly wants smaller cockpit on 2024 Alpine F1 car compared to “long arms” Ocon
The French duo have been evenly matched in their first season as team-mates at Alpine , but amid a season where the Enstone outfit expected to consolidate on its fourth-place finish in last year's constructors' championship. Gasly admitted the season had not lived up to expectations in that regard, and added that he was not able to feel entirely at ease with the overall balance of the car. Asked about which particular elements of the car he'd like to see improved and if Ocon had provided similar feedback, Gasly stated that the two had offered similar wishlists for next year's Alpine, except with regard to cockpit space. Expanding further, Gasly stated that he wished for a narrower cockpit to improve aerodynamic performance marginally, but Ocon's taller frame had necessitated more elbow room to drive comfortably. "We're kind of going in the same direction, apart from very long arms that he has! I'm requesting a tighter cockpit for obvious gains and he's not so keen," Gasly … [Read more...] about Gasly wants smaller cockpit on 2024 Alpine F1 car compared to “long arms” Ocon
Benetton, 40 years on: How a fashion label conquered Formula 1
This week 40 years ago, an Italian fashion label signed a deal which began one of the most successful, influential and colourful sponsorship programmes in Formula 1 history. Benetton’s entry into F1 with Tyrrell was successful from the outset, but the brand aspired to do more than just put its stickers on an F1 car. Within three years it had a team of its own and was winning races as a constructor, and in time it enjoyed championship-winning success with one of F1’s all-time great drivers. The idea a brand that was ‘just a T-shirt manufacturer’ could succeed in F1 was greeted with scepticism with some on their arrival. But Benetton soon disproved the doubters and inspired other brands to do the same – notably the soft drink producer which goes into the 2023 season as defending champions. 1983: Tyrrell Plucky underdogs Tyrrell had Denim logos on their cars when Michele Alboreto won the 1982 season finale at Las Vegas. But Luciano Benetton refused to share space on their car with … [Read more...] about Benetton, 40 years on: How a fashion label conquered Formula 1
