Ram is going big and playing fair. Thanks to a recalibrated and more powerful engine, the 2015 Ram 3500 can now claim best-in-class torque output and towing and payload capacity. Additionally, Ram says it achieved those tow ratings by adhering to SAE J2807 test criteria, making it the only automaker to use the standard in both its light and heavy duty trucks. To achieve these claims, Ram tweaked the Cummins 6.7-liter turbodiesel I-6 with “aggressive” fuel delivery and turbo boost calibration. Horsepower stays put at 385 hp, but torque is now rated at 865 lb-ft (at 1700 rpm), which is 15 lb-ft more than before. The engine will produce this power only when it’s mated to the Aisin six-speed automatic transmission, otherwise power drops a bit with the 68RFE six-speed auto or the six-speed manual. That torque rating puts the Ram ahead of the Ford F-Series and its 6.7-liter turbodiesel V-8, which makes 860 lb-ft, but more horsepower at 440 hp. Meanwhile, the 2015 Chevrolet … [Read more...] about Tweaked 2015 Ram Heavy Duty Claims Best-in-Class Towing

A beginner’s guide to plowing snow with a heavy-duty truck
Running a plow is like welding – the basics come quickly but experience pays dividends. The first thing to deal with is a frequently changing horizon because, stout as they are, even three-quarter-ton heavy-duty trucks will move up and down in front considerably with a 600-to-800-pound plow hanging off, and fast plow hydraulics rival some low-riders for bounce effect.Getting going is easy unless you forgot blocks and the plow froze to the ground, rookie. If you have to drive to your plowing assignment, blade height needs some experimentation to find the best cooling airflow; if you think sub-freezing temperatures negate that concern, remember you've installed what amounts to a 20-square-foot air brake up front that the truck has to overcome, and blowing snow could block some cooling air passages. Whether it's a "straight" blade or V design, always have it tilted to the right lest you catch a hidden post, solid mailbox, or edge of a snow bank. Most plow operators I spoke to rarely … [Read more...] about A beginner’s guide to plowing snow with a heavy-duty truck
Ram boosts Heavy Duty truck claims for 2015 [w/video]
heavy-duty truck segment boasts some of the tightest competition of any automotive niche in the US. Being able to tout just one best-in-class figure can be a marketing advantage over competitors, and Ram Trucks is adding one more accolade to its tally with a powertrain update for the 2015 Ram 2500 and 3500 Heavy Duty pickups. Ram now claims best-in-class ratings for torque, towing and payload, depending on configuration. The major change comes for the 3500 HD with a boost in torque for its Cummins 6.7-liter, inline-six diesel engine. It now produces a meaty 865 pound-feet of twist, a boost of 15 lb-ft, which is the best figure in its segment, according to the company. To eek out the extra power, the mill has more aggressive fuel delivery, and the turbo has been recalibrated. Of course, more grunt would be meaningless if drivers couldn't do anything with it, and the tweaks help allow payload to grow to 7,390 pounds, up from a rating of 7,320 pounds last year. The max towing rating … [Read more...] about Ram boosts Heavy Duty truck claims for 2015 [w/video]
Ram Execs: “Aluminum is the Best Material to Use for Beer Cans” [2014 Detroit Auto Show]
We sat down with Ram’s director of marketing, Robert Hegbloom, and vehicle line executive Michael Cairns, to talk about branding, diesels, and mid-size trucks. Oh, and the subject of the new aluminum-intensive F-150 came up, too. Car and Driver: It’s been four years since the switch from Dodge to Ram, and it seems the public is finally acclimated to the name. How has the change affected internal operations? Michael Cairns: At the time of the change, we were undergoing a lot of organizational changes, and Sergio Marchionne wanted to establish clear brand identities. Until then, Dodge was tasked with managing car and truck lines, and the truck side was starting to dominate. So ultimately it helped Dodge strengthen its identity as a car maker as much as it did Ram as a truck Brand.Robert Hegbloom: It really let us build our own image. Actor Sam Elliot does the voice-over work in our commercials, and his voice has become the image and persona of the brand, which probably … [Read more...] about Ram Execs: “Aluminum is the Best Material to Use for Beer Cans” [2014 Detroit Auto Show]
This $1.5 Million Off-Road-Ready Truck Is the Ultimate Tiny Home
If the journey is indeed more important than the destination, then the new EarthRoamer XV-HD could be worth every penny of its $1.5 million asking price. This off-road-ready recreational vehicle starts life as a heavy-duty four-wheel-drive Ford F-750 work truck equipped with a turbocharged diesel 6.7-liter V-8. Paired to a six-speed automatic transmission, the Brobdingnagian bent-eight makes 330 horsepower, which is arguably a paltry number given the host of heavy features fitted to the truck by EarthRoamer, a Colorado firm that has been building outrageous overland expedition vehicles (all wearing the XV designation) since 1998.Equipped with chunky 46-inch-diameter Michelin XVL tires, Fox shocks, a rear air-spring suspension, an array of LED lights, a hydraulic winch that can pull up to 30,000 pounds, and 12 inches of ground clearance, the XV-HD is an off-road enthusiast’s dream house on wheels. Although the engine’s limited power peak surely restricts … [Read more...] about This $1.5 Million Off-Road-Ready Truck Is the Ultimate Tiny Home
The Best Ford F-150 Engine Is The Smallest One You Can Buy
After one week with a 2016 Ford F-150 XLT SuperCrew 2.7-liter EcoBoost, I’m convinced that this small turbocharged V6 engine is the pick of the current F-150 range.Stunning acceleration, a positive working relationship with the F-150’s six-speed automatic, minor capability cutbacks, and a lower price tag combine to make the 2.7-liter completely worthy of full-size pickup truck duty, difficult though it may be for owners of 6.8-liter V10-powered Ford Super Dutys to believe. But based on our week-long experiences with each F-150 EcoBoost engine, fuel economy hardly plays into the 2.7-litre’s favorable equation.Admittedly, no two real-world fuel economy tests are identical. Our 2015 F-150 (SuperCrew, 4×4, 145-inch wheelbase) 3.5-liter EcoBoost test specimen arrived last November in Platinum guise with 275/55R20 Hancook Dynapro AT-m tires and a 3.31 rear axle. After a week of exhaustive use, the result was 17.8 miles per gallon.Little more than four months later, a … [Read more...] about The Best Ford F-150 Engine Is The Smallest One You Can Buy
