Schumacher and Haas teammate Nikita Mazepin propped up the timesheets during qualifying for the Bahrain season-opener two weeks ago, finishing 19th and 20th respectively. Haas opted against significant development for the VF-21 car, treating 2021 as a transition year in order to place focus on the new regulations coming in 2022. Schumacher finished eight tenths of a second adrift of a place in Q2 in Bahrain, and was almost four tenths of a second slower than 18th-placed Sebastian Vettel. But the German driver felt Haas’s qualifying performance was roughly what the team was anticipating on his debut race weekend. “We shouldn't say it was disappointing in any way,” Schumacher said when asked about the gap to Q2 in Bahrain qualifying. “I think we managed it pretty well. We had one clean lap. That's what we wanted. We managed to be close to what we imagined in terms of pace. “Obviously we had a bit of a deficit. I am 95% happy with my lap. Obviously there's … [Read more...] about Schumacher: No reason Haas can’t fight for Q2 this year

Hirakawa explains pitstop that cost TOM’S Okayama win
Hirakawa’s temporary teammate Sena Sakaguchi led the first half of the 82-lap contest from pole position, keeping the #14 Rookie Racing Toyota Supra of Kazuya Oshima at bay as the two circulated the track well clear of the remainder of the field. However, the race slipped away from Sakaguchi and Hirakawa after an incident for Yudai Uchida in the #360 Tomei Sports Nissan GT300, with almost the entire field heading into the pits to avoid being caught out by the safety car. Sakaguchi and Oshima entered the pits virtually nose-to-tail at the end of lap 33, with Yuhi Sekiguchi in the #36 TOM’S Supra following them another 15 seconds behind in third. TV pictures showed TOM’S mechanics pushing back the #37 Supra now driven by Hirakawa into the fast lane after completing the pitstop, losing the lead in the process. When a clear order emerged behind the safety car, the Rookie Racing Toyota of Oshima’s teammate Kenta Yamashita took the net lead from Sho Tsuboi in the #36 TOM’S … [Read more...] about Hirakawa explains pitstop that cost TOM’S Okayama win
Doha MotoGP: Espargaro tops FP1 as Morbidelli hits trouble
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic forcing the Argentine and US GPs to be postponed, MotoGP remains in Qatar for a second week for the first ever Doha GP. Morbidelli's Qatar GP last Sunday was wrecked by a technical issue he admitted on Thursday hasn't fully been diagnosed by Petronas SRT and Yamaha. He set the early pace at a 1m58.991s in the largely irrelevant afternoon FP1 at Losail, before bettering that pace with a 1m55.847s. Moments later he was shown the black and orange flag after his M1 bellowed smoke at Turn 1, forcing Morbidelli back into pitlane – though it was only a brief interruption to his session. Aprilia's Espargaro – who felt the marque proved last Sunday it's pre-season was "no joke" having finished seventh and the closest an Aprilia had ever been to a victory in the MotoGP era – moved ahead of Morbidelli at the same time with a 1m55.429s. This stood as the benchmark until just under 18 minutes to go, when Tech3's Danilo Petrucci shot to the top of … [Read more...] about Doha MotoGP: Espargaro tops FP1 as Morbidelli hits trouble
