Prepare for blood… Discover the Top 8 trends currently affecting the Chinese market below. China’s new vehicle market growth is smoothing out. The perception out there is that the entire market is slowing down, whereas only its growth is for now – a big difference. Some analysts say this is the beginning of the end, I say the Chinese new vehicle market remains the most dynamic and the fastest evolving in the world and will continue to be so for many years to come. Even if its growth did stop forever, we would still be left with a 25 million annual units Chinese market in our hands vs. 17 million for the U.S. and 15 million for Europe currently – including commercials. But the growth hasn’t stopped and Chinese sales trends are evolving faster than ever, with segments like microvans rapidly losing ground while others like MPVs and SUVs outperforming the market 6-fold… A record 75 new nameplates have kick-started … [Read more...] about Where is the Chinese market headed?
Truck Yeah The trucks are good! Engineers and designers always geek out hard seeing their dreams take flight. In this case, the Volkswagen Tanoak and Atlas Cross Sport that the automaker allowed us to fool around with weren’t exactly flying—the two show cars we limited to 20-30 mph—but the excitement was palpable nonetheless. After all, for years Volkswagen has said it couldn’t figure out how to crack the American market, even after its Beetle helped mainstream the idea of an “import car” decades ago. There was a twinkle in the engineers’ eyes, even as an annoyed Porsche GT3 … [Read more...] about This Truck and This Crossover Are the Volkswagens With American Dreams
NORTHRIDGE, California — Friday found me in a foul mood. I spent the bulk of my day reviewing the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, a vehicle I’d really been looking forward to driving that turned out to be a real disappointment. It’s as if Mitsubishi benchmarked the ride and handling of the best SUVs on the market, then instructed their engineers to do the exact opposite. Why this put me in such a lousy frame of mind, I can only chalk up to my flawed personality. I’m a car critic; my job is to criticize cars, not get all emotionally wrapped up in them. I’m pretty sure Roger Ebert didn’t go home after screening Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo and kick his cat. I don’t have a cat—and if I had a cat, I certainly wouldn’t kick it—but my ire needed an outlet, and it seemed the next vehicle I was going to review would be the proverbial cat.Enter my next victim, the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan. Here’s the problem: It’s extraordinarily … [Read more...] about Quick Take: 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0T SEL Premium 4MOTION
If you're the type that's always up for a road trip with friends or family, you need a vehicle that's ready when the mood strikes. A trek up the coast from Washington, D.C., to Manhattan for the 2018 New York International Auto Show showed that the redesigned 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan (VW's best-selling vehicle in March) would be a good choice for hitting the open road. Related: Volkswagen Slashes Price on 2018 Tiguan We're talking about a road trip where you need a vehicle that handles people and their stuff like a VW Microbus. It's not the vehicle that you'd want when the driving itself is the point, as opposed to the destination, activity or companions (nor does it try to be). My favorites for that purpose would comfortably handle one companion — and in some we'd have to share a bag. The test car was a top-of-the-line Tiguan SEL Premium with all-wheel drive ($38,450; all prices include a $900 destination charge) and the third-row seat option ($500).
