Listen to this article However, the team only had enough spares for one driver to use it, and it was given to Charles Leclerc – not through favouritism but for practical reasons. With the Maranello squad knowing he was starting from the back anyway, and wet qualifying clearly having a high chance of incident, it was felt that it was more sensible for Leclerc to have it. That’s because if he had gone off and damaged it in qualifying, then a forced change of spec for the race would only have shuffled him across to start from the pitlane rather than the back row. The risk of teammate Carlos Sainz dropping from the front to the pitlane was too much of a gamble to take as it would have both Ferraris right at the back of the field. This new lower downforce/drag configuration will be at both drivers' disposal for the British Grand Prix, and features revisions to both upper elements and the beam wing in an effort to help improve overall efficiency. It’s also clear that … [Read more...] about The F1 wing choice that impacted Sainz top speed in Verstappen battle

Airports battle long lines, cancelled flights
At Toronto's Pearson International Airport, staffing shortages in security and at customs and immigration have caused delays and long lines. (Photo: Reuters) Delays, cancellations, long lines and lost baggage are plaguing air travel worldwide, as airlines and airports struggle with soaring summer demand and staff shortfalls. London's Gatwick Airport has told airlines to cut back on inbound flights as it struggles with staff shortages and cancelled flights. Over a four-day weekend celebrating Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee earlier this month, lines of passengers waiting to check in stretched out of the terminal. Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport is limiting the number of passengers allowed inside, asking travellers not to show up more than four hours before their flights. It is also warning them to wear comfortable shoes for the hours long wait once inside. The two airports -- both gateways for European vacations this summer -- are struggling, like the rest of the industry, … [Read more...] about Airports battle long lines, cancelled flights
Van Gisbergen to make WRC debut in NZ
Listen to this article The Kiwi will take part in his home rally, the first WRC event in NZ since 2012, as part of his recent foray into gravel rallying. He dipped his toe into rallying water last year with a class win at the City of Auckland Rally followed by an outright win at the Battle of Jack's Ridge. Van Gisbergen has since embarked on a partial Australian Rally Championship programme driving a Skoda Fabia R5 run by the Perth-based Race Torque outfit, finishing second on debut in Canberra earlier this year. He will drive the same Skoda, with Glen Weston as co-driver, in the WRC2 class for his world championship debut in NZ on September 29-October 2. According to van Gisbergen the idea of competing at Rally NZ evokes fond childhood memories. “I’ve been around it a long time and going to all the rallies when I was young watching Rally New Zealand," he said. "It has always been a dream to do it but I’ve never really had the chance. “My favourite memories were … [Read more...] about Van Gisbergen to make WRC debut in NZ
Thailand at risk of fuel crunch with imported gas too pricey
PTT’s liquefied natural gas terminal at Map Ta Phut Industrial estate in Rayong province. (Photo: Apichart Jinakul) The government is curbing imports of liquefied natural gas due to surging prices, potentially putting the country at risk of fuel shortages. State-run importers cut purchases of LNG from the spot market because of skyrocketing prices and limited availability, according to traders. And while they plan to boost purchases of cheaper alternatives, like diesel and fuel oil, the deficit left by cutting LNG may be too large to be filled by other sources, said the traders who didn’t want to be named as they’re not authorised to speak to the media. “We won’t let a fuel shortage happen,” deputy government spokeswoman Rachada Dhnadirek said in response to a Bloomberg News inquiry on the prospect of a deficit. Thailand is not struggling to get supplies, she said. Some of the country’s poorer Asian neighbours -- including Pakistan and Sri Lanka -- are in the midst of … [Read more...] about Thailand at risk of fuel crunch with imported gas too pricey
Sainz now able to push without fear of crashing Ferrari F1 car
Listen to this article Sainz has struggled in the early races of 2022 compared to teammate Charles Leclerc , as he found it hard to get the most out of the fast car the Scuderia built for the new regulations. Retirements in Saudi Arabia, Imola and Azerbaijan further set the Spaniard back as they limited his seat time and prevented him from gaining momentum. In Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix, however, Sainz was the fastest man on track as he chased down winner Max Verstappen until the chequered flag. While Sainz was disappointed to lose out to Red Bull's world champion as his wait for a maiden F1 win continues, he said the Montreal weekend was a step forward for him as he feels more comfortable pushing the F1-75 to its limits, stating he "didn't leave an inch to the walls" trying to find a way past Verstappen. When asked later on Sunday if he now feels capable of challenging Verstappen and Leclerc on a regular basis, Sainz said: "Well, I hope so, but as I said a few … [Read more...] about Sainz now able to push without fear of crashing Ferrari F1 car
Verstappen: Red Bull F1 still “needs to improve” to fend off quicker Ferrari
Listen to this article Verstappen took his sixth win in nine races, strengthening his grip on the championship lead, which has grown to 46 points on teammate Sergio Perez and 49 units on Ferrari challenger Charles Leclerc . While Verstappen's Canada weekend was boosted by Leclerc's grid penalty, which took the Ferrari man out of contention, the Dutchman still had his work cut out to defeat the second Ferrari of Carlos Sainz , who hounded him over the final 20 laps. Sainz seemed to enjoy a small pace advantage over Verstappen, but couldn't find a way past the faultless world champion. Despite his string of wins and his comfortable championship position, Verstappen cautioned that his Red Bull team "needs to improve" after finding out it was "not the quickest" team on Sunday. "It’s still a very long way and I know the gap of course is quite big, but I also know that it can switch around very quickly," he said when asked about his sizeable lead in the standings. … [Read more...] about Verstappen: Red Bull F1 still “needs to improve” to fend off quicker Ferrari

Medical staff to be tried for Maradona death
Diego Maradona (centre during the 1986 World Cup) is widely considered one of the greatest footballers in history. BUENOS AIRES: Eight medical personnel will stand trial for alleged criminal negligence in the death of Argentine football legend Diego Maradona, according to a court ruling made public on Wednesday. No date has been set for the trial of the staff over Maradona's death in 2020, which prosecutors say was due to "omissions" by his caregivers who abandoned him "to his fate" during home hospitalization. Maradona died aged 60 while recovering from brain surgery for a blood clot, and after decades of battles with cocaine and alcohol addictions. He was found dead in bed two weeks after going under the knife, in a rented house in an exclusive Buenos Aires neighborhood to where he was brought after being discharged from hospital. He was found to have died of a heart attack. A panel of 20 medical experts convened by Argentina's public prosecutor concluded last year that … [Read more...] about Medical staff to be tried for Maradona death
Nissan 350Z With Tesla Motor Swap Drag Races Second-Gen Dodge Viper
Listen to this article This is a drag race between the past and the future. A 2002 Dodge Viper takes on a Nissan 350Z with a Tesla powertrain swap. Both machines are impressive in their own way, but watch to see which takes more victories. The Viper is mostly stock. The only tweak to the 8.0-liter V10 engine is a Borla exhaust, so the output should be around the factory-spec 450 horsepower (336 kilowatts). The car also has a set of lowering springs, and it wears Toyo R888 tires. Gallery: Second-Generation Dodge Viper (1996-2002) 36 Photos The other vehicle is far from stock. Starting life as a 2006 Nissan 350Z , it now has a custom Liberty Walk 370Z body kit and a Tesla Model S powertrain. The output is roughly 620 hp (460 kW). The batteries are underneath the hood where you'd usually find the V6 engine. To make that work, there are modifications to the … [Read more...] about Nissan 350Z With Tesla Motor Swap Drag Races Second-Gen Dodge Viper
