(AP) — Heat waves and drought gripping California highlight the urgency to slash fossil fuel use and remove planet-warming emissions from the air, a top state official said Thursday as discussions began on a new proposal for how the state will meet its ambitious climate goals. “I think every single Californian today knows that we’re living through a climate emergency,” said Jared Blumenfeld, secretary of the California Environmental Protection Agency. “And so what we’re doing today takes on additional importance and urgency.” He spoke as the California Air Resources Board opened a hearing on a plan updated twice each decade that sets a climate change roadmap for the state. Ecuador Seeks Partner To Stop Gas Flaring As Anger Rises In The Amazon
Ecuador oil company Petroecuador says it is working to shut down gas flares in the Amazon to comply with a court-imposed deadline, but progress is too slow for nearby communities who allege the flares cause cancer and other illnesses. A provincial tribunal in Sucumbios province last year ordered Petroecuador and a handful of private operators to stop hundreds of flares - which burn off natural gas emitted during oil production when there is no infrastructure to capture it - in inhabited areas by March 2023. The state-owned company is hoping to find a private partner to invest in technology needed to capture the 65 million cubic feet of gas emitted daily by flares, which flame constantly above verdant treetops. Petroecuador said 15 companies have expressed interest, … [Read more...] about Ecuador Seeks Partner To Stop Gas Flaring As Anger Rises In The Amazon
2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Vs 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Comparison: EVs Cross Over

One decade ago, the most popular EVs were expensive, attractive status symbols that, again, were out of reach for all but the beautiful people. But in the last few years, the clock seems to tick a bit less dramatically, as there are now several stylish and spacious electric vehicles that occupy the middle of the spectrum: practical EV range mixed with pricing that’s only a bit higher than average. Two such vehicles are the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 and 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 , a pair of family-sized all-wheel-drive crossovers with about 250 miles of range, priced somewhere between $40,000 to $60,000 with a variety of options and trim levels to suit one’s budget. As compact crossovers, both the ID.4 and Ioniq 5 fight at the heart of the automotive market, but they do so in very different … [Read more...] about 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Vs 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Comparison: EVs Cross Over
