Red Bull must maintain an all-new mindset for seeking performance or risk their Formula 1 dominance, the World Champions’ engineering chief has admitted. The implementation of a $145 million cost cap in 2021 and a subsequent set of brand new technical regulations marked a new era for F1, piling pressure on teams. Red Bull adapted best, but glory came at a price. Max Verstappen cantered to the Drivers’ title in 2022 to secure consecutive championships with a record 15 wins. Then the FIA found Red Bull to have overspent by $2.2million (£1.86m), albeit not by design, during 2021 and punished the Austrian team with a $7 million fine and development restrictions via a 10 per cent reduction in wind tunnel time. Red Bull will now be limited to 202 wind tunnel tests, compared to Ferrari’s 240 and Mercedes’ 256. With the budget cap falling to $135 million for 2023, the defending champions face an uphill battle to maintain their technical superiority – after the RB18 became one of the … [Read more...] about Red Bull explain how cost cap has changed F1 development ‘discipline’

Jean Alesi: It is now Adrian Newey versus Ferrari in F1, not Red Bull
Ex-Ferrari driver Jean Alesi believes that their true competitor is not the Red Bull team, but their design chief Adrian Newey. For 2022 Formula 1 introduced sweeping changes to the Technical Regulations, which saw the cars return to ground-effect aerodynamics for the first time since the early 1980s. And it was Red Bull who mastered the new rules, dominating to take a title double, their first since 2013. Red Bull started the season at a similar performance level to Ferrari, perhaps even slightly slower, but Red Bull’s development path saw the RB18 grow into the leading challenger, thus adding another title-winning masterpiece to the collection for Newey. Therefore, Alesi, who drove for Ferrari between 1991-1995, believes it is Newey directly who Ferrari are fighting against as his former team look to mount a fresh title challenge in 2023. “If we really look at how things stand, the real factor to consider is Adrian Newey,” Alesi is quoted by RacingNews365.com as having … [Read more...] about Jean Alesi: It is now Adrian Newey versus Ferrari in F1, not Red Bull
David Coulthard’s warning to Daniel Ricciardo after Red Bull return
Daniel Ricciardo could find his career “wrapped up” if it does not work out at Red Bull, according to David Coulthard. After a miserable couple of years at McLaren, Ricciardo returned to his home of Red Bull in the hope of not only giving himself a break mentally but also rediscovering the form that made him one of the most exciting drivers to watch on the grid. The Australian opted for the route less travelled as he pondered his post-McLaren future, choosing to decline offers of a full-time seat to take up the third driver spot at his former outfit. Ricciardo has maintained he is looking for a way back onto the grid for 2024 and is hoping to use time in the Red Bull car and simulator to refine his skills. He may only be 33 but he has been warned by another former Red Bull man Coulthard that he could find his F1 career over should he not impress at the Milton Keynes based outfit. “Daniel knows now having had a year of us seeing his performance not being where we all knew … [Read more...] about David Coulthard’s warning to Daniel Ricciardo after Red Bull return
The secret of Mercedes and Red Bull success revealed by former aerodynamicist
Eric Blandin has highlighted the stability and consistency at the top of Red Bull and Mercedes as reasons behind their long-standing Formula 1 success. The Aston Martin deputy technical director was aerodynamics chief at both teams at different times, leaving Mercedes after a decade with the eight-time Constructors’ champions to join ‘Team Silverstone’ as part of their hiring spree last year. Blandin also has stints with Red Bull and Ferrari under his belt high up in their aerodynamics teams through his career to date, and now wants to play a part in bringing Aston Martin to the front of the Formula 1 field with a new factory in the works and a significant increase in their resources. But with first-hand experience of what makes teams at the front successful, he pointed to the sturdy presences at the top of each team. “Both Red Bull and Mercedes have very talented people, but so do we,” Blandin told Aston Martin’s official website. “They’ve been so successful because the … [Read more...] about The secret of Mercedes and Red Bull success revealed by former aerodynamicist
‘When you see Max Verstappen and Red Bull on the entry list, you fight for P2’
Max Verstappen and Red Bull in their current form are going to take some beating if they are to be overhauled in 2023, according to Dutch racer Tom Coronel. The two-time World Champion took 15 wins from 22 races last season, an all-time single-season record in Formula 1, as he and Red Bull romped to both Drivers’ and Constructors’ glory. Such was Verstappen’s dominant streak in the second half of the season, winning nine of the final 11 races, World Touring Car racer Coronel even claimed: “If you see Verstappen and Red Bull on the entry list, you are normally fighting for P2.” Even though the team will be hit with a penalty in the form of a 10% reduction in wind tunnel time for 2023, on top of having the fewest runs available for winning the Constructors’ title last year, the driver and pundit thinks the reigning champions will be tough to rein in this season, given how they hit the ground running in Formula 1’s new ground effect era. “Their system and their combination is … [Read more...] about ‘When you see Max Verstappen and Red Bull on the entry list, you fight for P2’
End of Red Bull v Mercedes v Ferrari ‘spending war’ was a ‘game-changer’ for F1
Mercedes’ Toto Wolff has praised the cost cap introduced into the world of Formula 1 as it “protected us from ourselves.” Formula 1 underwent an historic change in 2021 when it introduced a cost cap for the first time ever in the sport’s 71-year history. The goal of the cap was to create a more competitive sport by not allowing the bigger teams to simply outspend the smaller ones on the grid. The cap was initially introduced at $175 million in a pre-pandemic world but was reduced to $145 million for 2021. In 2022, the cap was set at $140 million with an expectation for it to be set at a higher level for 2023 due to the increased number of sprint races. While the changes failed to produce the kind of sweeping change in the establishment that some fans may have been hoping for – Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes finished in the top three – there have been rare moments of success from the smaller outfits such as Haas’ pole position in Sao Paulo. Another added benefit was it … [Read more...] about End of Red Bull v Mercedes v Ferrari ‘spending war’ was a ‘game-changer’ for F1
Christian Horner highlights Red Bull’s one ‘mistake’ in their Sao Paulo team order row
Christian Horner has blamed a lack of communication for last season’s team order argument at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, calling that the “root cause” of the drama. Red Bull went into the Interlagos race chasing the 1-2 in the Drivers’ Championship with Max Verstappen have already wrapped up the World title in Japan while the team secured the Constructors’ in Austin. They wanted the runner-up spot for Sergio Perez to cap a near-perfect season. Instead they found themselves making headlines for all the wrong reasons as, on a weekend where Red Bull were surprisingly off the pace, cracks appeared in Verstappen and Perez’s relationship. Perez was running P6 when he was asked to move over for Verstappen, the caveat being that his team-mate would give him back the position if he wasn’t able to catch and pass those ahead of him. He couldn’t and, told to give back the position to Perez, he blatantly refused to, telling the team after crossing the line ahead of his team-mate: “I told … [Read more...] about Christian Horner highlights Red Bull’s one ‘mistake’ in their Sao Paulo team order row
Red Bull design chief’s warning: ‘Can Max Verstappen improve? Yes, of course he can’
Despite recording a record-breaking season in 2022 as he cruised to a second World title, Red Bull’s chief engineer Paul Monaghan believes Max Verstappen has yet to reach his peak performance. In fact the Briton believes there are still areas where the driver can get a “little bit better”. Last season Verstappen romped to a second World title, a contrasting story to his previous year’s championship title. While in 2021 he raced for the victory all the way through to the final lap of the championship, trading blows with Lewis Hamilton, last season he hit the front in the championship at round six and never looked back. The title race was all but over at the French Grand Prix when Verstappen clinched the victory after Charles Leclerc binned his Ferrari while he was leading the race. That race win was the first in a five-race streak for Verstappen, running from France to Italy. He clinched the title two races later in Japan, wrapping it up with four races to spare . It was … [Read more...] about Red Bull design chief’s warning: ‘Can Max Verstappen improve? Yes, of course he can’
A new-look RB19? Red Bull tease ‘blank canvas’ with social media post
Just one week before revealing Max Verstappen’s new RB19, Red Bull have teased a “blank canvas” livery that has fans speculating about a refreshed 2023 design. The Formula 1 World Champions are set to reveal the machine Verstappen and Sergio Perez will pilot for their defence of the Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles on February 3, with a launch event planned in New York. The RB18 will be a tough act to follow after the Austrian team’s 2022 concept sped into the history books as one of F1’s most dominant cars, propelling Verstappen to a single-season record of 15 Grand Prix victories. We’ll have to wait until the Bahrain pre-season tests to begin on February 23 for a slight indication of the new Red Bull’s pace but fans are wasting no time speculating about its aesthetics. The teaser released by Red Bull on Friday shows an all-white RB19, the livery completely untouched apart from their title sponsor’s trademark charging bull. The social media post is simply captioned: “Blank … [Read more...] about A new-look RB19? Red Bull tease ‘blank canvas’ with social media post
