It seems Jaguar’s engineering department has found a new way to get their kicks these days. You see, in the last couple of days, the firm has been quite busy adding more and more horsepower to its cars. It started off with the more powerful versions of the XE, XF and F-Pace, followed by the arrival of the utterly bonkers XE SV Project 8 at the 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed. And next up on that list is an updated version of the Jaguar XJR. What does it bring to the table? More firepower, what else! The updated Jaguar XJR made its first public appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed alongside the XE SV Project 8. However, while the Project 8 got all the limelight, the refreshed XJR was properly disguised. Jaguar wasn’t too keen on sharing anything about the new car either, but the ’575’ monikers slapped all over … [Read more...] about More powerful Jaguar XJR coming soon
The 2017 Honda Civic Type R went on sale last week as the most powerful production vehicle Honda has ever offered in the U.S. But an even more powerful Type R may be coming, Honda has revealed. Speaking with Automotive News, Civic chief engineer Hideki Matsumoto divulged Honda is considering a number of new Civic Type R variants. “We’re hoping that by gradually putting out more [variants] that we’ll be able to maintain a more stable sales volume,” he said. First on the list is a Type R with more horsepower than the existing model’s 306 ponies. Honda could also introduce a softer version that is “focused more on the grand touring aspect,” according to Matsumoto. Another possibility is an all-wheel-drive variant that would more directly compete with the Volkswagen Golf R and Subaru WRX STI. <!-- --> While new variants will help broaden the Type R’s customer base, Matsumoto said it was important … [Read more...] about Honda Eyeing More Powerful Civic Type R
The Honda Civic Type R has gone on sale in the US, and it promises a lot of entertainment for its eager fan base. On our recent drive, we found it to be impressively stable for a front-drive car boasting 306 horsepower. Making this more impressive, as Jalopnik reports, the Type R makes 295 hp at the wheel according to a dyno test. Compared to many vehicles, that's a rather small loss between the engine and the wheels. If, for some reason, the Type R isn't powerful enough for you, or you don't like the front-drive layout, Honda might still find a way to make you a Type R customer. According to Automotive News, Honda is planning a number of variants to broaden the appeal and extend sales once the first enthusiasts have already made their purchases. The first candidate for a special Type R would be a sportier, more powerful version. Honda's chief engineer for the Civic lineup, Hideki Matsumoto, told Automotive News that a more civilized grand touring version is also under consideration. … [Read more...] about Honda dreaming up Civic Type R variants – with more power, AWD
Though Honda enthusiasts with a taste for speed will soon be able to pick up a Civic Si, it won't be the only way to get a powerful Civic. Honda tuning company Hondata now offers a new tune for manual-transmission turbocharged Civics. It increases boost to 9 psi and adds a whopping 35 peak horsepower and 60 peak pound-feet of torque. That increase brings Hondata's Civic Sport test car up to about 225 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque from a measured 191 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque stock number. Hondata says these numbers reflect output at the crankshaft. This means that the company's Civic Sport is making 20 more horsepower and 62 pound-feet more torque than a new Si. Those are just the peak numbers, too. As you can see in the dyno graph provided to us by Hondata, the tuned car, shown in blue-green, has power and torque gains across the entire rev band compared with the stock car, shown in pink. In some areas, the horsepower gains are greater than that of the peak … [Read more...] about Make your Civic turbo more powerful than an Si with this Hondata tune
Prices for the Vento diesel 110hp start at Rs 9.75 lakh; Volkswagen adds a new colour, Silk Blue 8,624 views After the debut of the updated 1.5-litre diesel engine under the Ameo's hood a few weeks ago, it was only a matter of time before it found its way into other models from the VW Group. Skoda recently introduced the updated engine into the Rapid with the launch of the facelift and now Volkswagen has quietly introduced it in the Vento sedan. The Vento diesel now comes with the same EA189 1.5-litre engine. Essentially the same engine, this motor now delivers 110hp as opposed to 105hp earlier, thanks to a larger locally-sourced turbocharger. The torque remains identical at 250Nm. The Vento diesel with a manual gearbox now delivers 22.27kpl, while the DSG variant is good for 22.15kpl. The petrol-powered variants continue to be sold unchanged. In addition to the more powerful engine, Volkswagen has added a new Silk Blue paint to the Vento shade card. This is the same colour … [Read more...] about More powerful Volkswagen Vento diesel now on sale
The Swift will be updated with a new S variant offering more power from the 1.3-litre DDiS engine producing 90 PS along with a new set of features and will be positioned as the new top-end variant in the hatchback’s lineup Maruti’s blue eyed boy, the Swift needs no introduction to Indian customers. With sales strong as ever, the Swift has needed little effort to sell itself in the domestic market. While the facelifted Swift has been on sale internationally for over a year now, India will be getting it later this year. Nonetheless making the wait worthwhile, the automaker has teased a new version of the hatchback that will be sportier, fun and definitely more powerful than the existing version. Maruti has teased a new version called the ‘Swift S’ with the S denoting the sporty character of the hatchback. The Swift S is most likely to draw power from the same 1.3-litre DDiS engine that now gets a variable geometry turbocharger and will be tuned to produce 90 … [Read more...] about Maruti To Launch More Powerful Swift S With 90 PS
The BMW 5-Series gets some revision in India with the introduction of the updated 520d variant with more power and discontinuation of the 525d. BMW India recently discontinued multiple car variants for 2015 including 1-Series and 3-Series petrol versions and slow selling trims of the BMW 5-Series and X1. The German carmaker is currently concentrating more on profitability and hence has discontinued variants that are not doing well for the company. The BMW 525d, which was positioned between the 520d and 530d has been discontinued now and to cover the gap, they have increased the price of the 520d, giving it some more power with a retuned engine. The BMW 520d is powered by a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine that now produces 188 BHP (7 BHP more) of power and 400 Nm (20 Nm more) of torque. It can now do the 0-100 km/hr sprint in a claimed timing of 7.7 seconds. However, the increase in power output has led to a lower fuel efficiency of 18.12 km/l, emiting 146.11 g/km of CO2. The … [Read more...] about BMW 525d Discontinued In India, 520d Gets More Power
For the next generation of sports cars, McLaren have announced a partnership with BMW to develop new combustion technology for their engines. Working with other partners, including BMW, the collaboration will focus on new combustion technology that will be developed to deliver higher output per capacity than is currently possible, only to make their cars go faster. In addition to squeezing out more power from smaller displacement engines, another objective is to further facilitate CO2 reductions. This technology will be applied to future McLaren engines to come which can only mean one thing… FASTER MCLARENS! The government of the United Kingdom is also providing part financial support through the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) in order to improve the UK’s development and production capabilities of low-CO2 internal combustion engine technology. It looks like Honda may be cooking up a hotter version of its new NSX sports car, folks. According to The Detroit Bureau, insiders at Acura revealed that engineers are currently looking at several new ways of improving the NSX’s power output by a “notch or two.” Best of all, it is said that this added performance could be for an NSX Type R. There aren’t too many details yet, but the US publication reports that several ways of boosting the NSX’s power are being looked in to at the moment. For one, engineers are said to be closely focused on the NSX’s 3.5 litre twin-turbo V6 engine. As standard, the mill produces 500 hp and 550 Nm of torque, but its makers claim that this is still far from the engine’s limits. Insiders at Acura say that the current engine’s 143 hp per litre output may be “impressive, but far from nearing the limits of its design.” The report continues to say that increasing output by just 10 or 20 hp per litre … [Read more...] about Honda NSX Type R to get significantly more power?
The 2016 Nissan GT-R for the United States has been announced. It carries over all of the significant under-the-skin upgrades introduced on the 2015 JDM model, while adding on a few additions, including a more powerful VR38DETT engine, new 20-inch wheels and a special 45th anniversary Gold Edition. Based on the standard Premium variant, the special commemorative edition gets unique Silica Brass paintwork to match the colour offered on the 2001 R34 Skyline GT-R M-Spec. A gold VIN plate in the engine compartment and an interior plaque are also included. Less than 30 units will make its way to the US. Both the GT-R Premium and Black Edition receive an updated 3.8 litre twin-turbo V6 engine, now with 550 hp instead of 545 hp in last year’s model. Torque stays the same at 630 Nm. Also new on the Premium model are 20-spoke RAYS alloys wrapped in Dunlop Sport Maxx GT 600 DSST CTT run-flat tyres (standard fit since 2014 in place of the older Bridgestone Potenza RE070R units), … [Read more...] about 2016 Nissan GT-R gets more power and new wheels
Nissan has given its Navara and Pathfinder a mid-life facelift. The Navara is basically the pick-up version of the Pathfinder SUV and vice versa. It’s somewhat like the relationship between the Triton and the Pajero Sport, or the Hilux and the Fortuner. Nearly all body on frame pick-ups have body on frame SUVs as counterparts, including the Isuzu D-MAX. It’s just that the Pathfinder and the Thai-built D-MAX-based Isuzu MU-7 are not sold here in Malaysia. The ‘mother trucker’ is the largest and most powerful body on frame pick-up you can buy here in Malaysia. The facelift gives it a more powerful engine. The 2.5 litre turbodiesel engine which already packs 174 PS and a massive 403Nm of torque in its current incarnation has actually been upgraded to 190 PS and 450Nm of torque with this new facelift, yet still consumes just 8.5 litres per 100km on the combined cycle while hauling around such a heavy vehicle. Overseas, there is also a new more powerful diesel … [Read more...] about Mother Trucker now even more powerful – 190 PS!
I’ll be the first to admit that this job opens the door to some pretty spectacular driving experiences. As such, it’s very easy to have some pretty dick-ish thoughts creep into your brain. “A Mercedes-AMG A45 on track,” I think to myself while donning a surprisingly tight balaclava; “A car with a front-biased four-wheel drive system isn’t going to be a natural track weapon, is it?” But before I have a chance to give myself a mental talking to for being an entitled douchebag, I’m out on Budapest’s marvellous Hungaroring, following two other A45s and a Mercedes-AMG GT S instructor car and receiving the most pleasant car-shaped surprised I’ve experienced in some time. As the pace heats up, the A45 is showing itself to be quite the entertaining little track car. It’s flat and tidy even through the Hungaroring’s tightest, trickiest sections, with the four-wheel drive system’s vast amounts of grip making … [Read more...] about The Mercedes-AMG A45 Is Way More Fun On Track Than You Might Expect
The BMW i8 is set to receive a mid-life facelift, which includes a significant amount of changes that extend beyond just its looks. According to Autocar UK, this includes an upgraded hybrid powertrain that is undergoing testing on roadgoing prototypes, as well as the latest version of the i8-based safety cars seen at Formula E races. Although no details have surfaced on the revised powertrain, it is suggested that a more powerful electric motor will be fitted, replacing the 131 hp and 250 Nm unit found in the current i8. The 1.5 litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine should also get a few tweaks for more output. Put both together, and you’re probably looking at around 420 hp from the system. New software mapping for the i8’s six-speed automatic gearbox should also provide performance gains that improve upon the current model’s 0-100 km/h time of 4.4 seconds, with a limited top speed of 250 km/h. Supporting the hybrid powertrain – more specifically … [Read more...] about BMW i8 facelift to get more power, chassis tweaks?
The Toyota Yaris doesn’t exactly raise many eyebrows around here, what with its measly 106-hp output and staid design. As Toyota’s own ad campaign for the Yaris aptly stated a few years ago, “It’s a car!” Well, it’s about to be a significantly more enticing car, thanks to a new hotted-up version of the Yaris that’s making its debut for the European market. Not much information is available at this point beyond the fact that the new high-performance Yaris will offer more than 207 horsepower—a whole lot of grunt for a 2400-pound hatch. We suspect that this big power boost comes from a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The unnamed hot Yaris, which is based on the two-door version of the hatchback, also has sharp-looking wheels, a rear spoiler, a red-and-black graphics package, and some slight revisions to the front and rear styling. Toyota also claims that it has modified the car’s chassis for improved handling but without explaining … [Read more...] about Toyota Previews High-Performance Yaris: It’s a (Much More Powerful) Car!
More Mods For Our Project WRX The Subaru Impreza WRX is a performance bargain: A quarter-mile time of 13.5 seconds at 101 mph is as quick as any WRX STI we’ve tested, and the standard WRX model is about 10 grand cheaper. Being power hungry, we have investigated a number of claims that even more output—over the stock 265 horsepower and 244 pound-feet of torque—is available with a few simple modifications. As we found, your results may vary. Here’s how we got that extra power: __________________________________________________________________________________ STEP 1:The Intake Trick Getting more air into the engine’s combustion chambers produces more power, right? Right. After a simple installation, the low-restriction conical air filter and straight intake tube of the K&N Typhoon kit (800-858-3333; www.knfilters.com) gave us a 17-hp increase at the wheels and a new jolt of torque worth 21 pound-feet. The intake carries its own … [Read more...] about Five Steps to Making More Power in Your Subaru WRX
Change is afoot for the 2017 BMW 2-series, but these updates are unlikely to dampen our enthusiasm for those sporty coupes and convertibles. Both the 228i’s turbocharged four-cylinder and the M235i’s six-cylinder turbo give way to fresh replacements from BMW’s new modular engine family. Both also promise increased power, torque, and efficiency. As per BMW convention, the names have changed to reflect the upgrade. Four-cylinder 2-series coupes and convertibles are rechristened the 230i, while the six-cylinder, 10Best Cars–winning M235i models adopt the M240i name. The M240i’s 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six, code-named B58, is the same engine as the one installed in the recently updated BMW 340i. In that car, it preserves the free-revving, sonorous character of the previous inline-six, so we have high hopes for this new M240i, especially because more grunt is also on the menu. The new-to-2 B58 delivers 335 horsepower, 15 more than the M235i’s … [Read more...] about 2017 BMW 2-series: New Engines, New Names, More Power
With 11 different variants filling out Porsche’s Panamera lineup, it can get a little dicey keeping track of the hierarchy. We find that the best way to keep things in order is by looking at the spec sheet, which serves as a subtle reminder that not only does the 2014 Panamera Turbo S sit atop the model’s lineup, it’s also pretty ridiculous—and we mean that in the nicest way imaginable. Slated to make its world premiere at the Tokyo auto show next month, the Panamera Turbo S churns up 570 horsepower and a backside-compressing 553 lb-ft of torque. And for the first time, Porsche will fit its highest-po engine into the Panamera’s Executive model, which adds 5.9 inches of wheelbase and 4.7 inches of added rear-seat legroom—you know, for fearless execs who like to indulge their chauffeurs. It Don’t Come Easy The Panamera Turbo S’s mill begins life as the same powerplant that powers the plebeian Panamera Turbo: a 520-hp, 4.8-liter … [Read more...] about 2014 Porsche Panamera Turbo S and Turbo S Executive: More Power, More Length
Chevrolet will not be the sole brand in GM’s stable to offer a diesel passenger car. According to reports, Buick is next up for a diesel engine. It’s not known which Buick would get an oil burner but the likely candidate is the Verano, which shares a platform with Chevy’s Cruze, which is now available with a four cylinder turbo diesel in the U.S. The Opel Astra, even more closely related to the Verano, already offers a 1.9 liter CTDI diesel in Europe. The European companies that Buick sees at its competitors are increasing the number of their vehicles offered in the U.S. with diesel power as more consumers look for better fuel economy. While Buick is looking of ways to improve the fuel economy of the Verano with a diesel, the brand is considering options for what will likely be a more powerful of the Encore. While the company sold more than 3,200 of the small crossovers in September, according to GM sources the primary reason why people who had shopped the Encore … [Read more...] about Buick Will Likely Offer Diesel Verano, Considering More Powerful Encore
Stop. Wait a second before you get in. Study the Mazda 6’s curves and tell me this isn’t the best-looking car in its class. Alright, now hop in, depress the starter button, and listen to that sweet honey of a 2.5-liter inline-four purr. Ah, see, I tricked you into associating a gorgeous exterior (and interior) with other qualities you seek in a new car, and you up and let your imagination run away with itself. Purr? In the 2016 Mazda 6, it’s more like a groan, a bellyaching protest, a teenager hiding under the covers after you remind him that science class begins in 17 minutes. Even outside, the 6’s idle is especially gruff in an age of unrefined direct-injection four-cylinder idles. The exhaust note at idle is uneven, too, like an infant caught between crying and sleeping with sniffles. Traversing typically rough streets in the west end of Halifax, Nova Scotia, after exchanging an Audi A3 e-tron for the Mazda, the 6’s ride quality is obviously and … [Read more...] about The 2016 Mazda 6 Is Still Too Loud, Unrefined, And Slow, But I Just Took The Long Way Home
Ford Motor Company has issued specifications for its 2017 F-150 Raptor off-road performance pickup, and you can thank the company’s engineers for the attractive numbers. The next-generation Raptor makes serious gains not just in horsepower and torque, but also in fuel economy. The mileage boost should make those dirt-flinging romps through the countryside just a little bit greener. For starters, the dealer product document posted to Ford Raptor Forum two weeks ago was right on the money. The high-output version of Ford’s second-generation 3.5-liter Ecoboost V6 truly does make 450 horsepower in the Raptor, and cranks out an impressive 510 lb-ft of torque. Stock versions of the upgraded mill make 375 hp and 470 lb-ft. To put the Raptor’s boosted output into context, the previous generation housed a 6.2-liter V8 making 411 hp and 434 lb-ft. The model’s torque-to-weight ratio improves by 21 percent. A 10-speed automatic transmission co-developed by Ford and General … [Read more...] about 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor: More Power, More Speeds, More MPG
