Update: An IAB reader has shared a spy video of the Maruti Wagon R EV.October 25 -Last month, Maruti Suzuki commenced fleet testing of the Wagon R EV in India. IAB reader Nitin Johar spotted it in Gurgaon last week.The Maruti Wagon R EV is based on the new generation Japanese spec Suzuki Wagon R that was introduced in February last year. It debuted in India at the MOVE Summit in September this year. There are total 50 prototypes in India, all developed by Suzuki and built by Maruti Suzuki at the Gurugram facility in Haryana with CKD kits. On the 9th of this month, these prototypes were flagged off for the field test.Maruti Suzuki is testing the Wagon R EV on multiple terrains and in various climatic conditions to get valuable insights and gather critical inputs based on customer perspectives. This is not the successor for the Wagon R sold in India though, this vehicle is likely testing components for a part supplier.For the Indian market, Maruti has started trial runs of the next-generation 2019 Wagon R which it reportedly aims to launch in November this year. The underpinning of the Maruti Wagon R won’t switch with the lifecycle makeover this year, as per a report from Autocar India. Utilising HEARTECT for the Maruti Wagon R isn’t feasible because of cost concerns, Autocar finds. The new report also pours cold water on rumours of the Suzuki Solio spawning the next-gen Maruti Wagon R (codename: Maruti YCA), as the JDM-only compact tall wagon is based on the Heartect platform. The Indian-spec Maruti Wagon R will retain the current platform, albeit with upgrades to meet the upcoming crash test norms.
