The Perfect Car? Clean Fleet Report staffers are frequently asked, “What car should I buy?” Our answer is always some version of “What type of driving do you do?” From there we ferret-out that the family of four Outstanding in its field may want but have no practical need for a Mazda MX-5 Miata; the single woman with her first job out of college should probably stay away from a Cadillac Escalade and the person driving to work 80 miles round trip, five days a week, should be driving an electric car such as a Nissan Leaf, Volkswagen eGolf, Chevrolet Spark EV, Fiat 500e, Ford Focus EV, BMW i3 or Kia Soul EV. But what about the vast majority of people that have a need for a versatile car that can carry four passengers and all sorts of stuff, is comfortable on long trips and zippy around town, and when driven reasonably can get 45+ mpg? Oh, and the car needs to cost less than $30,000. Impossible, you say. But not if you consider the 2015 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen … [Read more...] about Road Test: 2015 Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen TDI

Brown 2011 Volkswagen TDI Sportwagen listed for sale after emissions repairsEnlarge PhotoThe gentle rumble under the brown station wagon’s hood brings back memories of not too long ago as I sneak its 6-speed manual through the gears. So, too, the way it accelerates down a highway on-ramp—like warm maple syrup, the brown wagon moves substantially with just enough verve. From the driver’s seat of this 2011 VW Golf TDI SportWagen, the memories conjured up are good ones. The VW TDI engine earned accolades in the early oughts for the way it combined good power and docile manners with upward of 35 mpg no matter how you drove it. But there are reminders of the past, not the least of which is a thin line of dust coughed up through the air vents when I cycle the air conditioner.Volkswagen TDI diesel cars stored at Pontiac Silverdome (Photo by Jalopnik)Enlarge Photo That’s because the brown diesel wagon I’m driving spent last winter confined to a dusty parking … [Read more...] about 2011 Volkswagen Jetta TDI SportWagen driven: Fixed, but does it matter?
A Compact Go-Anywhere Package The 2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen is a bit of what one cartoon character used to call a “way-back” machine. While a completely contemporary automobile, the SportWagen has the capability of taking me back in time to another era. Compact outside, spacious inside, ready to hit the road Station wagons are a bit of a time warp for a reviewer my age (i.e., baby boomer). We grew up with them in the day before minivans, SUVs and crossovers. They were the multi-purpose vehicle capable of hauling the family, a week’s worth of groceries and all of the camping gear and luggage needed for two vacation weeks on the road. The same characteristics continue to drive the popularly of Swiss Army knife-type vehicles like the station wagon. It’s differentiated from its more “modern” successors by one main attribute—sedan-like ride height. In turn, that brings more sedan-like handling, driving characteristics and fuel economy with … [Read more...] about Road Test: 2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen TSI S 4Motion
The 2010 Jetta Sportwagen is not as well known as the Toyota Prius. But the two vehicles have been compared. The Prius is the much talked about, industry-leading hybrid. The Jetta TDI is the increasingly popular and peppy diesel. The Prius made many of 2010 Best-of-the-Year lists and even topped some of the compilations. But the Jetta and its surprising value and impressive gas mileage ratings weren’t too far behind. In short, the Prius revolutionized the hybrid industry in the United States and the Jetta may well do the same for cleaning-burning diesel engines. A 2010 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen. The Weekly Driver Test Drive There’s no easy Northern California or San Francisco Bay Area connection to Mendocino. In either of the two major options to get to the picturesque coastal city, stretches of winding roads interrupt steady freeway driving. One route is more severe, but either journey has a reputation as unfriendly for car passengers. In other words, there’s a … [Read more...] about Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen TDI, 2010: The Weekly Driver Car Review
April 2, 2012 by Tom Williams Leave a Comment The Garage will be covering the 2012 New York Auto Show this week, and the sneak previews of what we can expect to see continue to pour in. The latest is a concept from Volkswagen named the Alltrack. In case you hadn’t guessed, the Alltrack is essentially a jacked up Passat wagon, but there is more to it than that. The current Passat, a car tailored to American tastes and built in Tennessee is a fine car, but I lamented the loss of the Passat wagon. So, you may ask, what’s the deal with the Alltrack? Volkswagen’s take is the Alltrack bridges the gap between passenger car and SUV. Hardly a new concept, as Subaru invented the notion of a raised passenger car capable of light 0ff-roading with the Outback. Audi later added panache and a heap of power with its awesome Allroad, which is no longer available in North America. Now that the current Subaru Outback has essentially become a crossover, there is a hole for VW to fill … [Read more...] about VW Presents Alltrack Concept for New York Auto Show
