Last month, Volkswagen R division head Jost Capito said publicly the long-rumored Golf R with 400 horsepower was dead. Now, new information claims the spicier hot hatch is back on the table. Autocar reported Friday that a Golf R Plus model based on the next-generation Golf has the backing of Volkswagen Group CEO Herbert Diess. Previously, VW R head Capito told Top Gear that a Golf R with 400 hp was ruled out and added "customers don't want it." We'd imagine Diess can tip the scales more so than Capito.2018 Volkswagen Golf R The latest information cites sources inside VW that claim the so-called Golf R Plus would be the brand's halo model and sit above a new standard Golf R. The new car would effectively harkening back to the Golf R 400 concept shown in 2014. Such a model was even spied testing in prototype disguise, but it's thought the German automaker's diesel scandal pushed plans back indefinitely. VW has reportedly made a lot of progress on the car, which … [Read more...] about 400-horsepower VW Golf R reportedly back on the table

Just one month shy of the five-year anniversary of the reveal of the Volkswagen Golf R 400 concept, the brand has announced there are no longer plans to build a production version of the extra fiery hot hatchback. VW's R division head, Jost Capito, delivered the Golf R 400's death sentence in a Monday Top Gear report. The final decision came down to research, and Capito said customers "don't want" 400 horsepower with a higher price tag. "They want around 300 hp under 50,000 Euros," he said. At current exchange rates, that's about $56,000, but cars in the U.S. tend to be less-expensive than those in Europe. The current Golf R costs around $41,000 on our shores. We have to imagine the production Golf R 400 would have been a $50,000 hot hatch at a minimum. Volkswagen will retire the current Golf next year, as the eighth generation will be unveiled in mid-2019, and the Germans might just send off the current iteration with a special edition. This model could be the production version of the R400 concept. The R400 was officially confirmed to hit the assembly line more than three years ago, but has since been shelved due to the cheating emissions scandal. Now, an alleged prototype spied lapping the Nurburgring appears to be fueling the idea behind it. Only there’s something strange about it. You see, the show car was powered by a 2.0-liter TSI four-cylinder making a whopping 400 PS (394 hp / 294 kW) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) of torque. With those kind of numbers, performance was up there with previous-gen supercars: 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) came in just 3.9 seconds and top speed was 280 km/h (174 mph). As rivals from Honda, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and BMW up their hot hatch game, Volkswagen has been left in the dust with its refined yet somewhat-underpowered Golf R. No more, says VW sales and marketing boss Jurgen Stackman. The eighth-generation VW Golf will spawn a range-topping R model that’ll make previous iterations look tame in comparison. Speaking to Auto Express, Stackman said that VW’s R brand needs to ditch its rational image. “The R brand is going extreme. The role of R is that it can go beyond the rational; nobody needs a compact car with 400bhp, but is there a place [for it?]. Certainly, and that’s the turf of R,” he said. Big changes are coming The next Golf R will be powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine like the current car. However, comprehensive modifications will increase output up to 400 hp, putting it right up there with the Audi RS3 and next-generation Mercedes-AMG A45. Interestingly, it is possible that Volkswagen will also … [Read more...] about 2020 VW Golf R Going Extreme With 400 HP And Hybrid Tech
Tweet TweetVolkswagen pulled the wraps off a high-performance concept model based on the current Golf hatchback. The Volkswagen Golf R 400 concept, unveiled at Beijing, packs a massive 2.0-liter turbocharged engine producing 400 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque. Linked to a six-speed DSG gearbox, the 0-100 km/h sprint is possible in 3,9 seconds with a top speed of 280 km/h. The total mass of 1,420 kg as well as the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system help to improve these figures. At the exterior, the German concept comes with revised bumpers, 19-inch alloy wheels with 235/35 R19 tires, carbon fiber splitters, flared wheel arches and a new exhaust. Inside, Volkswagen offers Alcantara and carbon leather, Lemon Yellow stitching, a pair of shell seats, a restyled dashboard and also a tweaked steering wheel.
