John McCormick Special to The Detroit News Published 4:00 p.m. UTC Jun 14, 2018 Hyundai chose downtown Detroit to highlight its latest models, the new Kona and Veloster urban cars. Going from the hip Foundation Hotel via bustling Campus Martius Park to the flourishing Wayne State area, Hyundai’s tour highlighted Motown’s ongoing revitalization. With pricing in the $19,000 to $28,000 range, both the Kona and Veloster are aimed at young, active consumers, much like the people fueling Detroit’s comeback. The 2018 Kona is Hyundai’s first stab at a small crossover, a relatively new market sector that’s growing by leaps and bounds. “This segment is up by 16 percent,” said Mike O’Brien, Hyundai vice president of product planning. “It is the Wild West in terms of vehicle specification because automakers are still feeling their way into the segment.” While small sedan competitors are all sized virtually identically, the small … [Read more...] about Car Culture: New, revamped Hyundais have hip ambitions

In the crowded metropolis of Hong Kong lives a man who knows more about off-road vehicles than possibly anyone else on earth. He has raced the Dakar Rally, torn apart priceless vehicles just to see how they work, written a book called The 4x4 Bible, and taught off-roading skills to locals. His name is Victor Ma, and while you may not have heard of him before, he is the King of Off-Roaders. Type his name into Google and you’ll find the mysterious collector mentioned dozens of times in 4x4-related articles and forum threads, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find anything more. Despite being widely renowned in China as the foremost authority on all things off-road, Ma has remained largely a mystery to the western world. Until now. Meeting The King Last year, as my brother Mike walked to the subway, he spotted some cool vehicles in the window of a shop in Fo Tan, an industrial area in Hong Kong. Curious, he popped in and met a man whose enthusiasm for four-wheel drives impressed … [Read more...] about This Man Is The Four-Wheel Drive King Of The World And His Collection Will Blow Your Mind
Hyundai unveiled its all-new Veloster and Veloster Turbo models at the North American International Auto Show in January 2018. The fresh design was a collaborative effort of Hyundai designers from Seoul, South Korea and the U.S. design center in Irvine, California. The new Veloster features a comprehensive exterior and interior redesign, powertrain enhancements, and a bevy of new and improved infotainment and connectivity features. The 2019 Veloster began production in March 2018 in Ulsan, Korea, with U.S. market availability in the second quarter of 2018. “Our new 2019 Veloster represents an even more compelling offering for young and young-at-heart automotive enthusiasts with more expressive design, involving dynamics and cutting-edge infotainment features,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president of Product, Corporate and Digital Planning at Hyundai Motor America. “When combined with Hyundai’s outstanding value and efficiency, the new Veloster is sure to … [Read more...] about 2019 Hyundai Veloster Starting at $18,500
I have a bit of a soft spot for the Hyundai Veloster. With its asymmetrical doors and a bulldog stance that was evident from the very start, I feel like it’s hard not to love the little Veloster. “It won’t last,” I said, the first time I saw one up close. “It’s too weird and too cool- it can’t possibly be allowed to live.” But live it does, and live it will, because Hyundai just launched an all-new Veloster for 2019. The official press release goes into detail about the car’s new Nu (get it?) turbo engine- which takes me way back to 1994 when Hyundai launched its first “Alpha” 1.5 liter 3 valve engine in the Veloster’s spiritual ancestor, the Scoupe. That was another car I have a bit of a soft spot for. Enough about old Hyundais, though– this post is all about the new Veloster. Check out the press release below, then let us know what you think of the funkiest new coupe money can buy in 2019 in the … [Read more...] about Hyundai Launches Redesigned Veloster in Austin
We’re pretty sure that not a lot of people remember this, but the latest-generation Fiat 500 was actually based on a concept called the Trepiuno, which came out no fewer than 14 years ago. When Fiat did put the car into production, mid-2007, they made sure to stick with the Concept’s retro styling, in order to give it a fighting chance against some of the industry’s most iconic small cars, like the Mini Cooper or the VW Beetle. Of course, the best part about a Fiat 500 is that it also comes in Abarth trim, which usually means more power, a louder exhaust, stiffer suspension, those sorts of things. Since this is a lightweight car, it’s also quite fun to drive, especially if you’ve got the right engine. Here, Doug DeMuro will argue that if it’s fun you want, it doesn’t get much better than a used 500 Abarth, especially if your budget tops out at $9,000. We won’t bore you with all the quirks and features he discovered over the course of this … [Read more...] about Is The Fiat 500 Abarth The Best Used Sports Car For Less Than $10k?
