If you were driving entirely on the highway, which would run out of gas first: a 2018 Volkswagen Atlas or a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT Trackhawk? This seems like a really, really stupid question with a really, really obvious answer.Related: Hate Stopping for Gas? The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas Isn't for Youis that obvious (spoiler alert: it's not) even though we (well, I) just argued that the Trackhawk is a gas-guzzling behemoth and should be taxed appropriately despite the boatloads of fun it provides when driven in its proper environment: a track. That means it's time for some math. If we assume we meet the EPA's highway fuel economy for both vehicles while driving, then multiplying that figure by the vehicle's fuel tank capacity should give a rough idea of each SUV's theoretical maximum range. 2018 Volkswagen Atlas 4Motion: 18.6-gallon fuel tank; 23 mpg highway; 427.8 miles of range 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT Trackhawk: 24.6-gallon fuel tank; 17 mpg highway; 418.2 miles of … [Read more...] about Can You Go Farther in a VW Atlas or a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT Trackhawk?

The VW Atlas Tanoak pickup truck concept was arguably the biggest surprise of the New York Auto Show. After all, when was the last time you thought about Volkswagen and trucks? But the concept was quite handsome, and the fact that it was based on the Atlas and its stretched-out MQB platform had us pondering the possibility of the truck reaching production. So we asked our talented rendering artist to envision just that. Overall, we wouldn't expect major changes on a production Atlas Tanoak. The most significant would likely be the use of a normal Atlas SUV front fascia instead of the unique one found on the concept. Volkswagen would want to save as much money as possible in developing the truck to make it profitable, so it would only make sense to utilize as many off-the-shelf pieces as possible from the existing crossover for the pickup. Besides, the standard Atlas nose looks plenty tough and square-jawed as it is. We think there's a chance that the chisled, angular motif between … [Read more...] about VW Atlas Tanoak pickup puts on production duds in renderings
The VW Atlas Tanoak pickup remains a concept but according to some analysts, it could prove a production success if the German brand taps into the huge market of female pickup buyers. Autonews reports that in 2017, 18 per cent of all pickup purchases in the United States were made by women, including 21 per cent of midsize pickups. Additionally, women weigh heavily into the final purchasing decisions of such vehicles. Despite this, very few automakers have looked at tapping into this market. According to KBB analyst Rebecca Lindland, this is something Volkswagen could look into. “No one is doing that right now. If you look at what Ford is doing with its messaging aimed at women with the Escape, a campaign like that could work for Volkswagen.” According to Volkswagen of America chief executive Hinrich Woebcken, looking closer into this idea could be a good idea. Atlas underpinnings could be a recipe for success Volkswagen believes that the Atlas Tanoak pickup could be the … [Read more...] about Women May Hold The Key To Success For VW Atlas Pickup
Today, most of our news comes from the New York auto show, where reporters have attended events Monday and Tuesday and media days formally start Wednesday. For us, this year's show is all about SUVs of all sizes and a lot of plug-in hybrid powertrains. All this and more on Green Car Reports. It's all about crossover utility vehicles at this week's New York auto show media days; the 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport was shown with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, just like the concept three years ago, but so far VW is just "studying" it for actual sale in the U.S. The future Lincoln Aviator seven-seat SUV will offer a plug-in hybrid powertrain, though Ford declined to give any details about it at all. The pictures are pretty, though. The redesigned 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid will launch early next year, just a few months after conventional gasoline versions of the latest generation of the best-selling crossover utility vehicle. Waymo plans to add up to 20,000 self-driving Jaguar I-Pace … [Read more...] about 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, Lincoln plug-in hybrid, self-driving Jag I-Pace, shorter VW Atlas: Today’s Car News
In Europe these days, it's all but de rigeur to fit auto-show concept vehicles with plug-in hybrid powertrains. Most of the Volkswagen SUV concepts that previewed what is now the Volkswagen Atlas seven-seat crossover, on sale today, sported plugs—though no such version emerged into production. Tuesday evening, before the New York auto show media days began, VW revealed a "near-production" concept for a shorter, five-seat version of the current Atlas, to go on sale next year as the 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport. DON'T MISS: Volkswagen Tiguan Plug-In Hybrid Concept Shown In Detroit (Jan 2016) Predictably, it was fitted with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, albeit a new one that hadn't previously been shown by Volkswagen. It adds a 40-kilowatt (54-horsepower) electric motor to the 276-hp 3.6-liter twin-turbo V-6 now used in the Atlas, powering the front wheels through a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission. A second and more powerful electric motor—85 kw (114 hp) and 199 … [Read more...] about 2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport concept shows plug-in hybrid possible in future
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the New York Auto Show was the Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak pickup truck. And one of the things that make the Tanoak so intriguing is how it seems pretty feasible to bring to market. It's based on the Atlas, which already has powertrains certified for emissions in America, and at least the front half wouldn't likely need much, if any work to make sure it passes U.S. safety standards. And like the Atlas, it uses the MQB modular platform found in everything from the aforementioned SUV to the Golf. As such, VW wouldn't be investing a lot of money to develop or adapt a from-scratch platform. With all this in mind, the obvious question is: Will VW build it? The answer to that question depends on whether VW should build it, and there are arguments for both sides. … [Read more...] about VW Atlas Tanoak: Would it make sense to build it?
Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport Concept Test Drive: 2018 Volkswagen Atlas V6 SEL The Atlas Cross Sport is essentially a shortened version of Volkswagen’s seven-passenger Atlas SUV, which went on sale last year as a 2018 model. Both vehicles are built on Volkswagen’s versatile MQB platform, but the Cross Sport is 7.5 inches shorter overall on the same 117.3-inch wheelbase as the Atlas. The Atlas Cross Sport Concept is clearly intended to be a sportier vehicle than the 7-passenger Atlas, as evidenced by its “coupe-like” profile with a sharply sloped rear hatch, aggressively styled front and rear fasciae, and beefy 22-inch aluminum wheels. The concept’s powertrain also backs up the high-performance looks—it uses the production Atlas’s 276-hp 3.6-liter V6, but pairs it with a plug-in hybrid system with an 18.0 kWh battery and dual electric motors, for a total output of 355 hp. VW says this powertrain has an all-electric driving range of 26 miles and … [Read more...] about 2018 New York Auto Show: Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport Concept
Volkswagen is giving the world a preview of the third-generation Touareg ahead of the model's debut at the Beijing auto show at the end of March, hinting at close resemblance to the T-Prime GTE concept that the automaker presented in Beijing in 2016.At the time, the T-Prime GTE was seen as a close preview of 2018 Touareg design themes and technology, and the sketch VW revealed over the weekend confirms this. The next-gen Touareg has already been seen completely uncamouflaged in several spy photos, so perhaps the sole departure from this official sketch will be the height of the roofline, which is a little taller on the actual vehicle.Based on the MLB Evo platform shared with the likes of the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne, the third-gen Touareg promises to take a substantial technological (and dimensional) leap over the outgoing model, growing in wheelbase by several inches and offering four-wheel steering in addition to an adjustable air suspension and a giant 15-inch infotainment … [Read more...] about Here’s why the 2018 VW Touareg will pass us by
It's clear from the Jetta's official reveal inside Cobo Center, which used images of Detroit cityscapes and photos of hip young millennials and families, whom Volkswagen is targeting with the new generation of its best-selling vehicle in the U.S. But the company also sees the Jetta as an important piece of rebuilding consumer trust in the wake of the diesel emissions scandal and strengthening its position in the U.S. market. It sounds strange for a company that sold 6.23 million vehicles globally in 2017, an increase of 4.2 percent, and will challenge Toyota for the crown of world's biggest automaker. But VW brass is serious about growing market share in the United States, where its sales last year were 339,700. VW opened its Jetta reveal event by talking about its new Atlas SUV and Tiguan three-row crossover, saying it knew it had to respond to Americans' appetite for big utes."This is just the beginning of our model offensive. We are pushing really hard, and I won't rest until … [Read more...] about 2019 VW Jetta’s low price, new features key to brand’s U.S. strategy
