As we bid "auf wiedersehen" to our long-term Volkswagen Atlas, we've had few qualms about VW's three-row SUV. The Atlas dominated rival three-row SUVs in a Cars.com comparison test in 2017 before going on to win our top vehicle award for 2018 — and, since December 2017, we've owned an all-wheel-drive SEL example with Tourmaline Blue Metallic paint and Shetland (gray) vinyl upholstery. It's served us well, though with a few annoyances. Add atop that the $1,888 we spent on fuel. At no cost to us were a handful of recall repairs and a sunshade repair for the panoramic moonroof. The sunshade was really the only thing out of the ordinary, but Volkswagen covered it under warranty. Would we … [Read more...] about 2018 VW Atlas: What We Spent and Mileage We Got in a Year of Ownership

Remember 2017? That’s when VW put its mid-size Atlas SUV into production, after its official unveiling at the LA Auto Show the prior year. It was also the year in which the German automaker had supposedly figured out the recipe to having strong SUV sales in the U.S. Yet, throughout 2017 as well as the first two quarters of 2018, the Atlas couldn’t even come close to being middle of the pack as far as overall sales were concerned. Now, it’s not that we have a crystal ball or anything, but we doubt Hyundai’s new Palisade will struggle the same way. The reason for that is simply the fact that Hyundai ticked all the necessary boxes with its new flagship SUV. Compared to something like the Atlas, the Palisade is more stylish, more modern and has a higher-quality interior, or at least perceived quality – which can be equally important. It has the looks and the tech (on paper), to hang with the segment’s best, and as long as it’s going to be … [Read more...] about Hyundai’s New Palisade SUV Is What The VW Atlas Should Have Been
Volkswagen is trimming the lineup for its Atlas three-row SUV, eliminating all but one four-cylinder version and axing the 2018 model's cheapest, front-wheel-drive V-6 version. It's also making modest price changes and adding some additional standard features, including standard safety tech for lower trim levels. Related: Subaru Ascent Vs. Volkswagen Atlas: The Family (SUV) Feud Begins For 2019, the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, which only comes with FWD, goes from four available trim levels to just one: the base Atlas S. Four-cylinder versions of the higher-up SE, SE With Technology and SEL trims have been dropped. For 2019, the 2.0-liter S starts at $31,890 (all prices include a $995 destination fee), up $145. For the record, Cars.com Detroit Bureau Chief Aaron Bragman found the higher-mileage four-cylinder Atlas "a perfectly respectable choice." Cars.com also named the Atlas our Best of 2018 vehicle after it won our 2017 Three-Row SUV Challenge. You can find … [Read more...] about VW Remaps Pricing, Versions for 2019 Atlas SUV
Volkswagen has made a few adjustments to the Atlas family in the United States for the 2019MY according to a CarsDirect report. One of them sees the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which puts out 235 hp (238 PS / 175 kW) and 258 lb-ft (349 Nm) of torque, only available in the S trim level. It starts at $31,890 (€27,756), which is quite competitive, as it undercuts some of its key rivals. For example, the 2019 Ford Explorer can be had from $33,360 (€29,036) with the 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine, whereas the Toyota Highlander LE, with the base four-cylinder lump, has an MSRP of $32,375 (€28,178). Is the Fender premium stereo in Cars.com's Best of 2018 award-winning Volkswagen Atlas worth $5,800? After comparing this 12-speaker system in an Atlas SEL Premium with the eight-speaker system in our Atlas SEL, we can say, of course not. We pose the question this way because it isn't an optional feature that you can tack onto the Atlas of your choice; it comes standard only on the highest trim level, the SEL Premium, which itself is sold only with the V-6 engine and all-wheel drive for a grand total of $49,665 with destination fee. This is $5,800 more than the non-Premium Atlas SEL V6 AWD and includes many other standard features.
