AS THE year comes to a close, we are taking a look at the best and worst safety crash test performers of 2018. The Euro NCAP safety organisation tests new cars each year, giving them a four-category rating based on how the vehicle would fare should it be involved in an accident. Over the last 12 months, 23 vehicles were tested and given stars based on their Adult Occupant protection, Child Occupant protection, Vulnerable Road Users protection and Safety Assist. While the majority received five stars, a select few didn't fare quite so favourably - including the vehicle to receive just the second ever zero-star score. Mercedes-Benz offers 48-hour test drives on C-and E-Class
The brand is offering the test drives on the C-Class or E-Class. The offer runs throughout August and is available at participatingLast year SsangYong introduced 48-hour test drives on its Tivoli and Tivoli XLV mid-sized SUVs. Seat also ran a promotion in March 2017 offering customers four-day test drives from dealers and its business centre specialists. And in 2016 Jaguar UK pitched its XE model head-to-head with its main rivals at key dealerships around the UK. The brand rented more than 250 BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class models for its XE Challenge event and will invite customers to test cars back to back. Nissan Leaf scores five stars in Euro NCAP testing
Top marks for new EV in new testing regime The 2018 Nissan Leaf has been awarded a five-star safety rating by Euro NCAP, in an updated set of tests that the firm describes as the "toughest safety tests to date."It scored 93 per cent for adult occupant protection, 86 per cent for child occupant protection, 71 per cent for vulnerable road user protection, and 71 per cent for safety assist systems.The Leaf is the first vehicle to be tested under Euro NCAP's new regime, which includes new areas like cyclist detection for autonomous emergency braking (AEB) systems, AEB pedestrian detection in darkness and obscure lighting conditions, along with testing the effectiveness of lane-keep assist systems and their ability to detect road edges – marked and unmarked.Michiel van Ratingen, secretary general of Euro NCAP, said: "These latest updates in Euro NCAP's active safety testing focus on both the protection of those inside the car and those who share road-space with it"."Our … [Read more...] about Nissan Leaf scores five stars in Euro NCAP testing
Sales staff urged to tailor test drives routes for customers
That’s the view of Coachworks Consulting, the independent automotive consultancy, which urged sales managers to assess the way test drives are offered.The call follows What Car? research showing how the average buyer is planning to test at least two new cars before making their next purchase, with 45% of buyers saying they will test more cars than they did last time they purchased. “The test drive is an increasingly important part of the sales process and with buyers expected to test more cars than before, it has to be experiential for them,” said Karl Davis, managing director of Coachworks Consulting.
