The current Volkswagen Golf R is a legend in its own lifetime. Many previous versions of fast, four-wheel-drive Golfs might have had seemingly more exotic V6 motors, but it’s the 2014, Mk7 generation with its 296bhp, 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that really proved how spectacular the hottest Golf could be. Priced at around £30,000 when new, many used examples of the Golf R are now into half price hot hatch territory. There are plenty to choose from, too, thanks in part to some very tempting PCP deals during the first couple of years the car was on sale. Further cause for its success was the fact it is not only fast, but also comfortable, spacious, frugal (you’ll see 30mpg on a long run if you’re careful) and easy to drive when you want it to be, as well as being available with a slick-shifting, six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic or a more hands-on manual gearbox. Alongside the five-door hatchback, there’s also a three-door model and, since … [Read more...] about Daily coverage of the world of cars. The Volkswagen Golf is undoubtedly one of Wolfsburg’s many pride and joys, and as far as performance-oriented hatches go, it hardly gets better than the Golf GTI and R. Now in its Mk7.5 facelift guise, there are a few visual and mechanical changes that come with them, but which is more worth your money? The Golf GTI is a car many consider to be the ideal all-in-one; it’s immensely quick, nimble and practical at the same time. It’s now on sale for RM225,888 with zero-rated GST. For the more avid enthusiast, the Golf R is RM53,000 dearer at RM278,888 (also without GST). With 60 PS and 30 Nm more over the GTI, just how can the price difference be justified? Well, all will be answered soon. Find out what we think of the Golf GTI and R Mk7.5 facelift in the video above, and let us know what you think of our verdict. Also, we’re thinking of pitting the Golf R against some other high-profile hatches, like the FK8 Civic Type R for example. Fancy some octane-filled … [Read more...] about FIRST DRIVE: 2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI and Golf R Mk7.5
In March, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) introduced a range of facelifted Golf Mk7 models – aside from the GTI, 1.4 TSI Sportline and R-Line, there was the Golf R in its five-door form. Now, a limited number of three-door examples is set to join the party. We’ve seen a dealer communique stating that 10 units of the Golf R three-door will be making its way here, arriving sometime in mid-August. In terms of specifications, the equipment list will mirror that of the five-door, save three items – not found on the three-door R are the Kessy keyless access lock/start feature, exterior mirror memory function and power adjustable driver seat. Otherwise, the standard equipment list includes Advanced Adaptive LED headlamps with dynamic light assist and Adaptive Chassis Control (DCC) as well as Vienna R leather interior upholstery and an R sports steering wheel with paddle shifters. Also on, an Air Care dual-zone climatronic system, a configurable 12.3-inch Active … [Read more...] about Volkswagen Golf R three-door
The fourth Volkswagen Golf Mk7.5 variant making its debut in Malaysia is the Volkswagen Golf R. The model was introduced alongside the Golf GTI and Golf 1.4 TSI Sportline/R-Line versions. The refresh brings about styling revisions – at the front, the facelift gets a new bumper, a revised lower grille intake design (a rectangular pattern replaces the previous horizontal slats) and new Advanced Adaptive LED headlamps with dynamic light assist. The rework also introduces LED tail lights and a revised four-slat diffuser at the rear as well as 19-inch Pretoria Black alloys – and 235/35 profile tyres – for the local specification car. The model’s 2.0 litre TSI engine has 290 PS at 5,500 to 6,500 rpm and 380 Nm from 2,000 to 5,400 rpm for output numbers – the 290 PS power rating (instead of the 310 PS seen in other markets) follows the path taken with the pre-facelift, in which the mill is detuned for our market. The unit is paired with a seven-speed, wet … [Read more...] about 2018 Volkswagen Golf R debuts in Malaysia
