Rarely do we get to combine “more than 500 hp” and “Volkswagen GTI” in one sentence, but once again the Worthersee festival in Austria comes to our rescue. The crazy Volkswagen Design Vision GTI is a race car that’s sure to whet the appetite of VW enthusiasts everywhere. UPDATE: We now have live photos of the Design Vision GTI and Amarok R-Line. Read about Volkswagen’s wild Amarok R-Line concept truck at Worthersee here. Unlike the GTI W12-650 — the mid-engined, rear-drive 12-cylinder GTI from 2007 with 650 hp — the GTI Design Vision uses all-wheel drive with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The GTI is powered by a 503-hp twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 with 413 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm, but Volkswagen points out that 369 lb-ft is available at 2000 rpm. Acceleration from 0-62 mph is claimed to take 3.9 seconds. For comparison, the 430-hp R8 V8 coupe accelerates to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds, with the new seven-speed … [Read more...] about Volkswagen GTI Design Vision Has 503 HP, 0-62 MPH in 3.9 Seconds

You read the headline right – the track-oriented Volkswagen Design Vision GTI that’s making its way to Wörthersee 2013 packs a 3.0 litre twin-turbo V6 that develops 503 PS at 6,500 rpm and 560 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. With AWD and DSG (number of speeds has yet to be made known), the Mk7 Golf GTI-based concept sprints to 100 km/h from rest in just under four seconds, en route towards a 300 km/h top speed. The widebody kit houses 20-inch wheels wrapped in 235 tyres up front and 275s out back. The wheels, derived from the GTI’s ‘Austin’ design, feature integrated blades that vent hot brake gas through the wheel openings. Peeking through the spokes are carbon-ceramic brake discs (381 mm front, 356 mm back) and red brake callipers. Apart from looking very obviously more aggressive, the Volkswagen Design Vision GTI is 15 mm shorter, 71 mm wider and 56 mm lower than the regular GTI, making it stand at 4.25 metres long, 1.87 metres wide and … [Read more...] about Volkswagen Design Vision GTI at Wörthersee: 503 PS!
The wraps have come off the eye-catching Volkswagen Design Vision GTI at the ongoing Wörthersee event in the Austrian city of Reifnitz. Judging by “the configuration of the intake and exhaust systems,” the Wörthersee-debuting Volkswagen Design Vision GTI concept appears to use a VR6 instead of a V6 as announced, says Autocar UK. The British publication points out that the twin-blown 3.0 litre six-pot powerplant’s two cylinder banks share one cylinder head, with a narrow 15° angle between the banks, as opposed to conventional V engines which usually have two cylinder heads (one for each cylinder bank) and 45°, 60°, or 90° angles between the banks. A Porsche engineer has confirmed to Autocar UK that the new VW engine is a narrow-angle VR6 and that it isn’t related to the new powerplants being developed for the upcoming Porsche Macan SUV. The publication adds that the engine could power future models such as high-performance variants of the Volkswagen CC and Volkswagen CrossBlue Coupe, and that whether the unit is all-new or simply a development of … [Read more...] about Volkswagen Design Vision GTI engine in fact a VR6?
The GTI meeting at Wörthersee is a veritable cult and pure automobile passion. Just like the car everybody is celebrating and driving there. There ought to be 150,000 fans showing up again in 2013. From 8 through 11 May 2013, they will turn the Austrian city of Reifnitz into a Mecca of the GTI scene. Traditional highlight: the world premiere of a concept car conceived by Volkswagen engineers and designers especially for the meeting. This year, it is a visionary GTI for car racing—the “Design Vision GTI.” An unmatched 370 kW / 503 PS Golf. The progressive design study is based on the seventh-generation GTI that was launched just now in Europe, transferring the design and power potential of the icon to the world of car racing. Visually, particularly intriguing: The design team under the aegis of Klaus Bischoff (Head of Design of Volkswagen Brand) has drawn the C pillars and side sills outward as autonomous body elements, thus creating space for substantially … [Read more...] about 2013 Volkswagen Design Vision GTI Concept
Volkswagen is set to reveal an extreme version of the 7th generation Golf GTi at the Wörthersee fan meet in Austria. Over the years there have been many people who have modified the VW Golf GTi right from Hannover-based Nordstadt to Swiss coachbuilder Sbarro but it was Volkswagen who with its 650bhp, mid-engined, Golf MkV won a lot of praise and so here they go again. At the Wörthersee festival this year, as part of its activities, Volkswagen will bring, what they call, the Design Vision GTI. It’s a super hot hatch in sketches for the time being but soon the photos will be out and you will get to see it in the flesh right here. But Volkswagen has let on the technical specifications of the Design Vision GTI and this is what it looks like. VW has thrust into the bonnet of the Design Vision GTI a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 which produces a massive 503 bhp and 560Nm torques. Power is sent to all four wheels through a dual-clutch DSG automatic transmission and that has … [Read more...] about Volkswagen set to reveal its Design Vision GTI
Volkswagen engineers have built and brought a new toy to their fans at the annual Wörthersee festival in Reifnitz, Austria. Called the Design Vision GTI, this track toy is a Golf that's been widened, lowered and given an injection of twin-turbo V6 steroids. The powerplant providing motivation is a 3.0-liter V6 paired with two turbochargers to produce 503 horsepower and up to 413 pound-feet of torque. With all-wheel drive and Volkswagen's famous DSG gearbox (the gear count is unknown), the Design Vision GTI can erase what's between you and 62 miles per hour in 3.9 seconds, as well as a reach a terminal velocity of 186 mph. Carbon ceramic brakes, 20-inch wheels and a specially tuned chassis round out the hardware upgrades, while engineers compressed the car's dimensions to be shorter, wider and lower than a stock GTI.The exterior of the Design Vision GTI is meant to evoke the future of GTI styling, which is fine by us as we especially like how the car's iconic C-pillar is pulled away … [Read more...] about VW debuts 503-hp Design Vision GTI at Wörthersee [w/video]
This weekend’s Volkstravaganza in Wörthersee, Austria, will play host to the first public appearance of VW’s radical red GTI Roadster Vision Gran Turismo. For the brand’s loyal followers that can’t be there, VW has released these sweet, highly detailed renderings and a pile of info that goes beyond what we learned when conceptual sketches were circulated last week.To recap: The GTI Roadster Vision Gran Turismo concept is strictly a show car that builds on VW’s 2013 Wörthersee star, the Design Vision GTI. The chopped-top GTI was originally created as a purely digital vehicle for Sony PS3’s Gran Turismo 6. But just as Mercedes-Benz built a life-size version of its similarly missioned Vision Gran Turismo sports-car concept—which stole last year’s L.A. auto show—VW decided to make this one a reality, too. With its malevolent grin and widened body, the styling is a clear evolution of the Design Vision GTI’s, and this one … [Read more...] about VW Releases Awesome Renderings of GT6 GTI Roadster Concept, Pile of New Info
Someone had better get a wet vac to our office, stat, because upon seeing Volkswagen’s just-unveiled Golf-based race car concept, drool flowed in torrents. Torrents, people! Besides looking like a GTI that’s gone on an intake bender, pumped up its guns at the gym, and popped some roll-cage Viagra, the Golf’s most notable feature is that it’s just a Golf, sort of. There is no “R” badging anywhere, and Volkswagen stresses that the race car is simply a heavily modified, good ol’ Golf, and it’s front-wheel drive!Created to evaluate Volkswagen’s possible participation in the new Touring Car Racer International Series (TCR), the Golf TCR concept is less “concept car” than full-blown, ready-to-race race car. It routes 330 horsepower from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four (okay, the engine was borrowed from the Golf R) to the front wheels via a six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic. The chassis is 40 cm wider—that’s a … [Read more...] about Golf R’nt You Jealous? Volkswagen Unveils 330-hp Golf Race Car Concept
Design Vision GTI concept, a twin-turbo 3.0-liter VR6-powered wide-body chunk of white techno-chocolate devoid of sound insulation.Loud, violent, and loony, we didn’t exactly find ourselves wishing there was a production version of the thing, although we did find ourselves dreaming about a trip to Laguna Seca for an afternoon of forced-induction barbarity. At the same L.A. show, Mercedes premiered its Vision Gran Turismo concept, a full-size mockup of a car that’d only ever be driven in the eponymous video game. Now Volkswagen’s jumped into the PlayStation fray with its own Vision Gran Turismo, and it’s basically a speedster-ized version of the car we drove.Like the Design Vision GTI before it, the Vision GranTurismo will debut at Austria’s Wörthersee Festival, an enthusiast gathering that’s seen the global premiere of some of VW Group’s nutsiest specials. This year’s event runs from May 28–31, with the chopped-top GTI making … [Read more...] about Vision Quest: VW to Debut GTI Roadster Vision Gran Turismo Concept at Wörthersee
