The Red Bull GRC may have shut down, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be any rallycross action to follow in America. In its place, the Americas Rallycross series has sprung up. And two major manufacturers have already announced their intention to compete. Both Volkswagen and Subaru have signed on to challenge the new North American offshoot of the FIA World Rallycross Championship. The Volkswagen Andretti Rallycross team field the Beetle Supercar it previously campaigned in the Global RallyCross Championship, and Subaru will do the same with its Impreza WRX STI. VW will enter two cars, piloted by Tanner Foust and Scott Speed. And Subaru’s three entries will be driven by Chris Atkinson and Patrik Sandell, with the third entry alternating between UK driver David Higgins, American hot-shoe Travis Pastrana, and “other drives to be announced.” “Our team has been able to achieve great success in rallycross and we look forward to continuing that legacy … [Read more...] about Volkswagen And Subaru Sign On For New Americas Rallycross Series

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — It better appeals to the younger generation. At least that’s what we’ve been told numerous times in recent years in regard to new-fangled racing series such as TORC: The Off-Road Championship and the Red Bull Rallycross Championship. Well, it turns out that not enough younger folks — or folks in general — were turned on by either series to keep them in business. TORC featured off-road vehicles such as trucks and buggies racing on short-course off-road dirt circuits that included mud pits, jumps and other obstacles. Meanwhile, the GRC featured supped up compact cars such as the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Beetle racing on courses that were part asphalt, part dirt and included jumps as well. Costing as much as $500,000 each, the Supercar category of GRC was deemed no longer viable and that indirectly led to the downfall of the series. That and the fact no one really attended the majority of GRC events to begin with and the promoters had a … [Read more...] about KERCHNER: Off-Road & Rally Series Shut Down
Scott Speed and his Shark Week-themed 2015 Volkswagen Beetle Global Rallycross Championship carEnlarge PhotoFollowing major changes to the series this year, Red Bull Global Rallycross is likely dead. The series, not to be confused with the FIA World Rallycross Championship, has reportedly been struggling for months with a series of lawsuits and unpaid bills, Jalopnik reported on Tuesday. Surfing over to the series' official website shows a completely blank events page. This year, GRC was readying changes to its vehicle classes. The top-level Supercars class was dropped in favor of a Gold class. The class encompasses the series' spec Lites cars, which left many teams without a segment to enter their most powerful machines. Meanwhile, IMG, the organizers of the FIA WRC, announced a new Americas Rallycross (ARX) series that attracted the same supercars left out of GRC. Andretti Autosport, Subaru Rally Team USA, and Ken Block's Hoonigan have all signed on for ARX. WRC … [Read more...] about Global Rallycross is likely dead, 2018 events cancelled
September 18, 2015 by ponycargirl Leave a Comment At the onset of the Red Bull Global Rallycross double header presented by Subaru Tecnica International, all contenders were looking to narrow the wide gap between themselves and points leader Ken Block by racing their way to the podium. In addition to full-season drivers Bucky Lasek and Sverre Isachsen, Subaru Rally Team doubled their presence with winning-streaking rally driver David Higgins and fan favorite Travis Pastrana all in new STi livery. After disappointingly not making the podium in the Volkswagen-sponsored Washington DC race, Beetle drivers Scott Speed and Tanner Foust were also tweeting smack in the weeks leading up to LA. This literary device, while clumsily executed here, is known as foreshadowing. In the final it looked like it was going to be Speed with the win, Foust in second, and Isachsen in a hard-fought third place, until a competitive Patrik Sandell edged past the Subaru driver in the last lap. … [Read more...] about Shaking It Up at the Red Bull GRC Double Header in L.A.
