The body of the car was left bare metal, but the grille panel was painted with a crosshatch, and the interior was done in red vinyl by Ron Mangus. The mini roadster started out as an aluminum tub with a mock split-window windshield. The body sits on an aluminum suspension, but there’s no supporting framework under the tub. “It’s strong enough that it needs no frame,” James explains. “The body is the frame.” The suspension is designed to look like a dropped axle in front, with kicked-up mounting points for the aluminum wheels, which were made by one of James’ friends. “They are meant to look like old steelies,” he says. “They were also meant to be light, but they aren’t.” In the rear, the axle has a center bulge intended to replicate a Columbia two-speed rearend, and a cross-mounted arch to represent a transverse leaf spring. James’ nine-year-old son, Devin, knows more about suspension than most adults! How do … [Read more...] about Devin Crosby’s Roadster Wagon

Sitting in a Subaru WRX STI at the St Ninian’s crossroad, I still wasn’t really prepared for what was coming. Mark Higgins - who this week has set a new benchmark for a car around the Isle of Man TT course - grins as the stragglers in the first Supersport Race flew past. Stragglers? Apologies. No such thing. Every one of those 90-odd riders were absolute heroes as they wound their 600cc bikes towards full throttle, threading the needle that would lead them onto Bray Hill. Watch the video of the modified Subaru WRX STI smashing the Isle of Man TT car lap record Bray Hill… Higgy’s nemesis. The place he came closer than ever to stacking a Subaru at 150mph five years ago. A Subaru not dissimilar to the WRX STI we are sitting in now. The bikes done, the road is ours. Mentally, I'm still not even in the ballpark. “How quick will we be going?” I ask Higgins. “We’ll have a go in places, but we’ve got to be … [Read more...] about What is it like to ride with Mark Higgins around the TT course?
The best thing about this car is that it evades description. We’re labelers by nature and by vocation-Pro Street, Pro Touring, Gasser, all those-but nothing’s more exciting than when someone builds a car that escapes all the cliches. Before we’d ever slapped an eyeball across this particular creation, a guy said to us, “Have you seen that Peterbilt rat rod thing?” Rat? It sure ain’t that. It draws on that low-buck trend for its basic bobber-truck stance but takes it way above and beyond. As well as this thing ducks categorization, it may also confound you on make and model: It’s a ’56 Peterbilt semitruck cab artfully reconfigured by James Crosby Designs in Ontario, California. James is a longtime fabricator whose dad actually crewed on the Summers Bros. Goldenrod. He had a scheme for a bare-metal hot rod truck for a long time, but when Jimmy Shine sort of stole that thunder with his well-known ride, James decided to go funkier. “I … [Read more...] about Custom Peterbilt Rod – Gizmoness
24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race coming up the weekend of June 12-13, Sony has re-affirmed their interest in motorsport with title sponsorship of Team Peugeot Sport. Of course, the PlayStation and Gran Turismo brand has been prominently connected with the event for several years now, with highly-visible banner placement around the Mulsane chicanes. This year, though, with the pending release of GT5, they’ve got more reason than ever to support the big race. Here’s the Sony France press release, via GT5rs (thanks to Vidor for the tip!): Sony Computer Entertainment France is very proud to announce its partnership with Team Peugeot Sport for the 2010 24 Hours of Le Mans. Sony Computer Entertainment France is engaged in the sports world since its launch, especially in the field of auto racing. Besides the commitment of Sony Computer Entertainment France in the car does not stop at 24 hours Le Mans and extends to several French pilots. The first of of them is … [Read more...] about Sony On-Track at the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2010
