But with a unique collection of teams reaching the conclusion of this year's NCAA men's basketball tournament, fans in Houston can get in the door this weekend without spending outrageous sums of money. The Final Four is set to get underway Saturday at NRG Stadium, with the national championship game scheduled for Monday night. According to data from StubHub, the cheapest tickets for the semifinals were just $45 as of Thursday, with the average ticket price for all sessions down roughly 20 percent from last year's event in New Orleans. The cheapest tickets for Saturday appeared to rise slightly to $49 by Friday morning, but a wide array of options are available for less than $100 in the 500 and 600 levels. Sen. Chris Murphy to run for third term, pledges not to accept corporate donations
U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., said Thursday he will run for a third term in 2024, highlighting his decade-long work to curb gun violence and vowing to not accept any corporate donations during his campaign. Murphy was first elected to the Senate in 2012, weeks before the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting happened in the congressional district he had been serving in the U.S. House at that time. He has said that tragedy motivated him to prioritize passing gun reforms, which have stalled in Congress for years. After months of bipartisan negotiations, he helped champion the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which was signed into law by President Joe Biden last June. It was the first time Congress had passed gun safety legislation in nearly three decades, though it left out many of Murphy’s and Democrats’ priorities, like a federal assault weapons ban and universal background checks. The bill strengthened background checks for those buying firearms under age 21 and … [Read more...] about Sen. Chris Murphy to run for third term, pledges not to accept corporate donations
AP WAS THERE: Uncovering Lyndon B Johnson’s stolen election
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 ALICE, Texas (AP) — In 1977, Associated Press reporter James W. Mangan's exclusive interview with a South Texas election judge who detailed certifying false votes for Lyndon B. Johnson nearly three decades earlier made headlines across the country. With the win by an 87-vote margin in the 1948 Democratic primary runoff, Johnson, then a congressman, easily defeated his Republican opponent to take a seat in the U.S. Senate, and he eventually ascended to the presidency. Mangan spent three years pursuing the story, which pulled back the curtain on the victory that had drawn suspicions ever since election officials in rural Jim Wells County announced the discovery of uncounted votes in ballot box known as Box 13. Headlines across the U.S. that accompanied the story included: “Polling Official: Phony Votes Stole ’48 Runoff for LBJ”; “LBJ’s election to Senate ‘stolen’”; … [Read more...] about AP WAS THERE: Uncovering Lyndon B Johnson’s stolen election
Far-right influencer convicted in voter suppression scheme
NEW YORK (AP) — A self-styled far-right propagandist from Florida was convicted Friday of charges alleging that he conspired to deprive individuals of their right to vote in the 2016 presidential election. Douglass Mackey, 33, of West Palm Beach, Florida, was convicted in Brooklyn federal court before Judge Ann M. Donnelly after a one-week trial. On the internet, he was known as “Ricky Vaughn.” In 2016, Mackey had about 58,000 Twitter followers and was ranked by the MIT Media Lab as the 107th-most important influencer of the then-upcoming presidential election, prosecutors said. He had described himself as an “American nationalist” who regularly retweeted Trump and promoted conspiracy theories about voter fraud by Democrats. Mackey, who was arrested in January 2021, could face up to 10 years in prison. His sentencing is set for Aug. 16. His lawyer, Andrew Frisch, said in an email that the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan will have multiple reasons to choose … [Read more...] about Far-right influencer convicted in voter suppression scheme

CT has spent $6.7 million to bolster security at private schools. Some advocates say it’s not enough
After one of the nation’s deadliest school massacres left 20 children and six adults in his Newtown community dead in 2012, the Monsignor Robert Weiss began receiving calls from fellow priests and Catholic school officials around the country — with many wanting to know what could be done to provide protection for their students and parishioners At the parish school at the St. Rose of Lima Church, where Weiss has pastored since 1999, he said officials were asking themselves the same question. In response to the attack, as well subsequent edicts from local officials, Weiss said the school replaced windows with bullet-proof glass, hired a retired police officer to provide armed security, built fencing and installed a system of security cameras to blanket the K-8 campus. In the years since, Weiss said the school has continued to beef up its security measures, most recently installing a system allowing the principal to lock down the school “with the push of one button.” “I … [Read more...] about CT has spent $6.7 million to bolster security at private schools. Trump and advisers caught off guard by New York indictment
More than a week after Donald Trump had angrily predicted - incorrectly and with no specific evidence - that he would be arrested, the former president had grown cautiously optimistic. Advisers had counseled him that a possible indictment by a Manhattan grand jury involving hush-money payments to an adult-film star would not come for some time - if at all - and Trump had even begun joking about "golden handcuffs," said one person who spoke with him in recent days. But on Thursday, the news that Trump had simultaneously resigned himself to and believed he could wish away finally broke: A Manhattan grand jury had voted to indict him over hush-money payments to adult-film star Stormy Daniels during his 2016 presidential campaign, making him the first ex-president charged with a crime. Trump's team had long been preparing for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's investigation to end in a possible indictment. His top political advisers, including Chris LaCivita and Jason … [Read more...] about Trump and advisers caught off guard by New York indictment
