Global stocks rise ahead of US inflation update

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 BEIJING (AP) — Global stocks and Wall Street futures rose Friday ahead of a United States inflation update that traders hope might prompt the Federal Reserve to ease plans for more interest rate hikes. London and Frankfurt opened higher. Shanghai and Tokyo advanced. Oil prices declined. Wall Street rose Thursday as worries about the global financial system eased following the collapse of two U.S. banks and one in Switzerland. Traders hope a measure of U.S. inflation due out Friday that is closely watched by the Federal Reserve will show upward pressure on prices easing. That might prompt the Fed to postpone plans for a possible rate hike at its May meeting. A softer inflation reading would be a “signal to continue with the risk-on theme," said Tim Waterer of Kohle Capital Markets in a report. Inflation in the 20 countries that use the euro slowed to 6.9% in … [Read more...] about Global stocks rise ahead of US inflation update

How Kevin McCarthy manipulated Biden’s words on debt talks

March 31, 2023 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

"What changed?" - House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), in a tweet with a video of clips of then-Vice President Joe Biden, March 29 - - - House Republicans keep pressing the White House to agree to significant spending cuts before they will agree to raise the debt ceiling. A deadline for a deal is fast approaching. Most estimates suggest the U.S. Treasury will run out of maneuvering room to meet its obligations in the summer or early fall - and the United States would default. White House officials have insisted they will not negotiate over raising the debt ceiling, though they are willing to discuss possible spending reductions as a separate matter. Many are veterans of the Obama administration, which faced its own debt ceiling showdown with Republicans in 2011. Ultimately, after lengthy negotiations, a bipartisan budget deal, known as the Budget Control Act, was negotiated by House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) and President Barack Obama, along with other top … [Read more...] about How Kevin McCarthy manipulated Biden’s words on debt talks

April 1 is a big day for disappointment as all your favorite brands are bound to release some lame April Fools’ Day gag. Well, unless your favorite brand happens to be Jeep. Then April 1 is on par with Christmas Day, as the automaker is heading to Moab, Utah for the 57th annual Easter Jeep Safari, a nine-day off-roading event in the desert where they’ll debut a number of concept vehicles showing the customization potential of their current and former lineup, and previewing the future of their highly-capable SUVs. The big news out of the Easter Jeep Safari in recent years has been their Magneto model , an all-electric Wrangler with a stick shift ( really ). That continues for 2023, with the Magneto 3.0 offering another look at what a future Wrangler EV could look like (though we still have no real clues as to when that will happen). But of the seven one-off concepts Jeep and their partner in crime, Jeep Performance Parts by Mopar, dreamt up, the one that we’d gladly open up our … [Read more...] about Jeep Mashed Up a Retro Cherokee With Their Hybrid Wrangler

Worries grow that Trump indictment will eclipse other probes

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 WASHINGTON (AP) — The indictment against former President Donald Trump involving a 2016 hush money payment is raising concerns that it could undermine public confidence in what democracy experts view as far more important investigations. Trump is facing multiple investigations related to his refusal to accept his 2020 loss to Democrat Joe Biden. That includes whether he pressured election officials to overturn the results, encouraged fake electors from battleground states and his role in the events that led to the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol. Jeffrey Engel, founding director of the Center for Presidential History at Southern Methodist University, called the indictment this week from a New York grand jury “the appetizer to their main course still to come." “That main course, literally, is democracy at stake and who we are as a nation,” he said. … [Read more...] about Worries grow that Trump indictment will eclipse other probes

(AP) — Family and friends of Evelyn Dieckhaus, one of three children who were killed in a school shooting in Nashville this week, remembered her Friday as a “shining light” and said farewell to a girl who loved art, music, animals and snuggling with her older sister on the couch. The funeral at the Woodmont Christian Church in Nashville’s Green Hills neighborhood was closed to the media. Before the service, the church's senior minister, the Rev. Clay Stauffer, echoed what Evelyn's family has shared about her. “She was a shining light. She was radiant,” Stauffer told The Associated Press. “I think our challenge is to take her light and keep spreading it to a world that has so much darkness and pain.” Evelyn's was the first funeral held for the victims of Monday's mass shooting at The Covenant … [Read more...] about Mourners gather for 1st Nashville school shooting funeral

McLaren are building a new wind tunnel, so why do they support banning them? · RaceFans

When asked why he had committed to McLaren – allegedly until end-2024 – by RaceFans during an interview in Monaco on Thursday, Lando Norris listed the team’s plans to build a new wind tunnel as one of “a combination of a few things over the past couple of years that we’ve done, but then also things that we have coming up in the future. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free “I guess having our own wind tunnel is one of the biggest things,” he continued, adding, it would be much easier for “the guys and girls who travel all the way to [Toyota’s facility in] Germany every time and go to the wind tunnel, spend time in isolation, there for three weeks, come back and spend time in isolation again and so on. We lose a lot of time compared to other teams who are able to do it a lot quicker.” Wind tunnels are extremely costly pieces of kit, not only to install but also to maintain and operate.
