Suzuka showed Mercedes can no longer expect tyre degradation advantage
The once-dominant Mercedes team have been a shadow of their former selves since the current technical regulations were introduced at the beginning of last year. Out of the 38 grands prix since then, they’ve won just one. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free But though their current car and its predecessor have tended to lag off the pace in qualifying they have often been more competitive in race trim. Their drivers have regularly enjoyed better tyre degradation than their rivals – Red Bull obviously notwithstanding – which has afforded them useful strategic options during races. At a hot and unexpectedly abrasive Suzuka, that could have played to their advantage. But George Russell’s attempt to make a single pit stop, on a day when most preferred two, demonstrated that Mercedes’ strategic edge isn’t what it once was. On paper, Mercedes appear to have made progress with both cars. Lewis Hamilton and Russell started seventh and eighth respectively, and came … [Read more...] about Suzuka showed Mercedes can no longer expect tyre degradation advantage
Russell says “strange” Suzuka surface causing massive F1 tyre degradation
The Mercedes driver said that the opening day of practice on Friday had been a puzzling one, as there was so little grip on offer. Speaking after ending second practice in fifth spot for Mercedes, 0.6 seconds adrift of pace-setter Max Verstappen , Russell said that it had not been a normal day of action. He suggested that the asphalt, which includes newly laid sections through Turns 3, 4 and 7, was not behaving as anticipated. "There seems to be a huge amount of tyre degradation," he said. "It's really weird in Suzuka. "It is one of the best tracks in the world to drive, but this year it feels like the tarmac has really broken up and the cars are sliding on top of the surface. "It's given a bit of a strange feeling to all the drivers out there, and that's what's contributing towards that tyre degradation." With Pirelli bringing the hardest of its compounds to Japan, low degradation could have moved it towards a one-stop. Russell thinks at the moment that, while he … [Read more...] about Russell says “strange” Suzuka surface causing massive F1 tyre degradation
Alonso explains “throwing me to the lions” radio rant in F1 Japanese GP
The Spaniard made it clear on several occasions during the race that he was frustrated by a lack of straightline speed, a result of aero set-up choices made by the team. But his most noteworthy comment was a result of Aston Martin calling him in for his first pitstop earlier than he had expected. Alonso had made a good start on the soft tyres, taking advantage of contact ahead between Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez to shoot up to sixth place. But he was the first top-six runner to pit, coming in as early as lap 11 as the team responded to cars behind stopping. Later on in the race, as he struggled with the lack of straightline speed, he told the team that it was "throwing me to the lions stopping that early". Alonso, who recovered to eighth place after a change of strategy, downplayed the suggestion that he was angry on the radio, and said any driver would be frustrated in the same situation. "Well, not angry," he said when asked by Motorsport.com about the radio … [Read more...] about Alonso explains “throwing me to the lions” radio rant in F1 Japanese GP
Quartararo explains Martin India MotoGP overtake ‘frustration’
The 2021 world champion enjoyed one of his better weekends of an otherwise tough campaign at the Buddh International Circuit. Quartararo was sixth in the sprint on Saturday and scored his second grand prix podium of the year on Sunday after trailing a dehydrated Martin home. The Yamaha rider was able to close right in on Martin in the latter stages after the Pramac rider was forced to zip up his leathers, before Quartararo overtook him on the final lap when Martin ran off track at Turn 4. Quartararo’s stint in second, however, lasted all but one corner as Martin carved around the outside of him into Turn 6 and held firm through the last few corners. The Frenchman waved his hand in frustration when he crossed the line behind Martin, but explained that this was not directed at the Pramac rider. “To be honest, when he overtook me from Turn 5 to Turn 6, clearly the grip I had on the left was really bad and I could not do anything,” Quartararo said. Fabio … [Read more...] about Quartararo explains Martin India MotoGP overtake ‘frustration’
Marko explains his refusal to let Verstappen tackle the Nurburgring Norschleife
Allowing Max Verstappen to drive a Formula 1 car on the Nurburgring Nordschleife would be too high a risk, says Red Bull motorsport consultant Helmut Marko. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Red Bull will hold its ‘Formula Nurburgring’ at the former home of the German Grand Prix in November. Daniel Ricciardo , who returned to the team as a reserve and test driver this year, will demonstrate one of their former F1 cars on the Nurburgring’s full Nordschleife layout. Yuki Tsunoda , who drives for Red Bull’s second F1 team AlphaTauri, will also appear at the event. He will drive a Honda NSX GT3 Evo. However Marko made it clear Verstappen was not allowed to join the event, even in an old F1 car running on demonstration tyres. He said the reigning world champion, who is on his way to a third consecutive title, could not resist the temptation to tackle the lap record around the perilously quick circuit. “It’s basically a show run, so you don’t have the … [Read more...] about Marko explains his refusal to let Verstappen tackle the Nurburgring Norschleife

McLaren drivers wary of low Shanghai temperatures
Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button suspect the cooler temperatures usually seen at this weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix will mitigate any progress McLaren have made with their car. McLaren appeared to have gained at least a second of lap time in hot conditions at Sepang. But China’s round of the world championship is usually held in much lower temperatures. “I don’t think our car package will be as well suited here as it was in Malaysia,” said Alonso, “especially if the weather is as cold and windy as it usually is in early springtime in Shanghai”. “There is a feeling that the expected cooler weather will make it harder to generate tyre temperature,” Button explained, “which could mean that any progress we make doesn’t necessarily translate to a lap time benefit”. “It’s a pity we didn’t finish the race in Malaysia,” he added. “We’d made solid progress up until that point in the weekend, and it would have been a fantastic boost to get a car home in amongst some of the cars in the … [Read more...] about McLaren drivers wary of low Shanghai temperatures
Verstappen sitting pretty but unexpectedly hot track could cook up drama
Reports of Red Bull’s reign of dominance over the 2023 season coming to an end have been greatly exaggerated. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free In a year when competition between their rivals behind has been as unpredictable as it has been gripping, Red Bull have routinely rocked up to paddocks across the globe only to crush all opposition with near-militaristic execution. Then, in Singapore, a rare stumble from the world champions offered hope that the Red Bull giant could indeed be toppled. Yet six days later, Red Bull and Max Verstappen reminded everyone just how powerful a combination they are when they stormed to pole position in Suzuka by one of the biggest margins of the season – and the largest for nearly 20 years at the famous Japanese circuit. Not that it was of any surprise to their opposition. “Our internal messaging was ‘expect them to be back out front when we get back to Suzuka’,” admitted Mercedes’ trackside engineering director Andrew … [Read more...] about Verstappen sitting pretty but unexpectedly hot track could cook up drama
