Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 NEW YORK (AP) — Convicted California lawyer Michael Avenatti wants leniency at sentencing for defrauding former client Stormy Daniels of hundreds of thousands of dollars, his lawyers say, citing a letter in which he told Daniels: “I am truly sorry.” The emailed letter, dated May 13, was included in a submission his lawyers made late Thursday in Manhattan federal court in advance of a June 2 sentencing. Avenatti, 51, should face no more than three years in prison for his latest conviction, or 4 1/2 years in all, because two convictions have destroyed his life, the lawyers said. “This sobering reality is as sufficient and powerful a punishment and deterrence as any. Worse, Mr. Avenatti’s extreme rise and fall played out on the most public of platforms, an experience he is unlikely to ever recover from reputationally,” they said. Last year, Avenatti was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in … [Read more...] about Avenatti, facing sentencing, apologizes to Stormy Daniels
In its first two outings, the auteur-driven, genre-defying absurdist dramedy "Atlanta" - about an aimless, upwardly immobile Princeton dropout named Earn (played by series creator Donald Glover) who remakes himself as the manager of his cousin Alfred's (Brian Tyree Henry) fledgling rap career - was one of the most acclaimed shows on television. The crown jewel of its network, the already prestige-laden FX, it boasted Emmys, star power, buzz, influence and a rare, smirking wit that seldom got its due in the countless, and fully deserved, paeans to its trenchant social commentary and boundary-pushing experimentation. Perhaps the surest sign of its success is how many shows it's inspired; it's hard to imagine critic's darlings like "Dave," "Ramy" or "Reservation Dogs" existing without it. But Season 3, which premiered this spring after a four-year hiatus, has had a more mixed reception. Much of it follows the cousins on Al's (aka Paper Boi) latest European tour, where they're joined by … [Read more...] about Why ‘Atlanta’ Season 3 was such a letdown
The remaining Ukrainian fighters at the Azovstal steel plant have received orders to stop fighting and give up their defense of their last foothold in the city of Mariupol, Denis Prokopenko, a commander of the far-right Azov Regiment said in a video Friday. Hundreds of fighters evacuated the besieged facility in a negotiated surrender between Moscow and Kyiv this week, but it was unclear how many were still inside. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Friday that a total of 1,900 Ukrainian fighters there had laid down their arms - a claim The Washington Post could not independently verify. In the country's eastern region, Ukrainian troops are fighting a Russian assault that President Volodymyr Zelensky described as "hell" in a nightly address. "Donbas is completely destroyed," he said, accusing Russian forces of bombing the city of Severodonetsk. As the battle rages, the Senate approved President Joe Biden's $40 billion package of fresh military, humanitarian and financial … [Read more...] about Mariupol fighters ordered to stop fighting; Donbas region is ‘destroyed,’ Zelensky says
Last week, the Washington Nationals posted a tweet that read: "Crypto 101. You have questions. We've got answers." An accompanying video included frequently asked questions about cryptocurrency, asked and answered over a baseball highlight reel. One big problem, though, was that cryptocurrency was in free fall, spurred by the collapse of Terra, the sponsor of the social media posts and the Nationals' most visible brand partner in 2022. Fans quickly expressed anger with their favorite team pushing a plummeting cryptocurrency to its Twitter following of more than 780,000. The tweet was scheduled in advance, according to multiple people inside the organization, who also said that Terra's collapse is stirring tension about how to proceed with the partnership. The Nationals signed a five-year, $38.15 million deal this winter to promote Terra and received all the money up front. The internal debate, according to multiple people with knowledge of the discussions, is centered on … [Read more...] about Sports teams love crypto. What happens when their sponsor strikes out?
With two thrusters out and a balky thermal control system, Boeing's Starliner spacecraft successfully docked with the International Space Station Friday evening, completing yet another important milestone in its uncrewed test flight after two previous failed attempts. Just over 25 hours after lifting off from Cape Canaveral, the autonomous spacecraft, which did not have any astronauts on board, docked itself to the station at 8:28 p.m. Eastern, overcoming a series of glitches, as Boeing works to eventually fly NASA astronauts in the capsule. Cheers broke out in mission control in celebration of the spacecraft's first docking with the station. The docking was originally scheduled for 7:10 p.m. but was delayed as controllers on the ground worked to confirm telemetry data and to ensure that lighting conditions were ideal and communications were stable. The docking was delayed again after a problem with the mechanism Starliner uses to dock with the station forced controllers to … [Read more...] about Down two thrusters, Boeing’s Starliner docks with space station
