It’s year 49 for an event that attracts as many as 10,000 of the hardest-core Jeep faithful for a week of rock crawling, winching, and tall tale-telling. The Jeep brand supports the event without overtly sponsoring it and seizes the opportunity to gauge interest in new models, modifications, and accessories. You should know that Jeeps are among the most modified vehicles in the industry, with 98 percent of all Wranglers featuring at least one accessory item. Indeed, the 1.2 million accessories sold last year works out to two items per Jeep sold. Catalogue and factory items that went into production after being warmly received at Moab include the Wrangler Rubicon 10 model, the Liberty’s cloth “SkySlider” sunroof, the now ubiquitous red tow hooks, and the 4-inch high-top fenders that allow 35-inch tires to fit a Wrangler with no suspension modification. Many of those parts and perhaps some of the ones discussed below can be ordered and installed at a … [Read more...] about 2015 Easter Jeep Safari Concepts
Trailhawk and desert hawk
The Renegade is the smallest model in the Jeep lineup, sitting two rungs below the Cherokee, but since its debut in 2015 it's been a strong seller for the brand, helped by the fact that the aging Compass wasn't replaced until late 2017. Along with its Fiat 500X sibling, the Renegade arrived during a boom for small SUVs and crossovers, and it set its sights upon the lower end of the price spectrum, even though higher-spec models like the Trailhawk and its Desert Hawk variant overlap with larger Jeep models.Designed from the ground up as the entry-level Jeep model -- the Renegade is not a direct replacement for any other vehicles in the range -- this wee SUV offers the Jeep formula in a compact, urban-friendly package that features a spacious interior, good ergonomics, plenty of storage space and a well-designed cabin. Sporting a very cab-forward design and a tall ceiling, the Renegade makes the most of its boxy shape, maximizing passenger space that in other pocket-sized SUVs and … [Read more...] about 2017 Jeep Renegade Desert Hawk: Trail-rated with desert style
Imagine if once a year your grandmother made a chocolate cake. Not a chocolate cake, that chocolate cake. Blow-your-mind chocolate cake. But she won't ever let you have any – you can only have the spatula and whatever's left over in the mixing bowl. And you don't care. You look forward to that spatula and bowl every year because – "Gadzooks!" – that is some stupendous cake. For us, that cake is the Easter Jeep Safari. An annual pilgrimage to Moab, Utah for a taste of what Fiat-Chrysler's off-road brand has cooked up in its Design Dome. "No, you can't have any," the company tells us, "but you can taste it here, then dream about it until next Easter."In Detroit, Jeep gave us a close look at the seven concepts it built for this year's 49th annual event. Then it went a step further and took those show cars to Mill Canyon, UT, to crawl the red rocks in Jeep's natural habitat. After all, the company calls Moab, "Our home away from home."And it's not true that we never get … [Read more...] about 2015 Easter Jeep Safari Concepts First Drive
After festooning the Jeep Renegade with 30-plus original-Jeep graphics, many of them hidden in the oddest of places, it’s about time the small SUV got its first complete Mopar body kit. While we won’t get this black-and-yellow Renegade with the MoparONE pack, we are getting the black and tan Renegade Desert Hawk that also premieres in Paris. Somehow, an American Jeep with U.S. Army–style star decals that’s made in Italy and showcased in France will not make it to America. Blame globalization, or something. The Renegade MoparONE is based on the European market’s Longitude trim (as opposed to our Latitude) with Solar Yellow paint, a black-striped hood, and matte-black mirror caps. It also packs a one-inch lift kit with taller 70-series all-season Michelins (up from the stock 65s) to better match the more aggressive Trailhawk, even though the Longitude is just one step up from the base model. A rooftop cargo carrier also comes with the package, which … [Read more...] about Over There: Jeep Renegade MoparONE Gets Overseas Duty
As the lingering detritus of the dismal Dodge Caliber is finally cast from FCA’s sales lineup, a mere name remains: Compass. Today, Jeep announced its redesigned small crossover built on the Small Wide platform that underpins the Fiat 500X and the Jeep Renegade, a trucklet meant to slot in between the Tonka-toy Renegade and the landshark-go Cherokee.Official details are sparse at this point, although Jeep claims that 17 different powertrains will be available in one part of the world or another. The Compass also will offer “open-air” freedom, as well as “superior on-road driving dynamics.” For those who do venture off the beaten path, photos confirm that a Trailhawk model will be available, red tow hooks and all.For the U.S., we imagine a two-engine mix will be featured, with either a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder or a 2.4-liter naturally aspirated four as the base engine, with Jeep’s upcoming 2.0-liter turbocharged … [Read more...] about Hey! Jeep is continuing to expand the Renegade subcompact crossover SUV model line with the addition of two new trims: the Altitude and the Deserthawk. Both will formally be unveiled at the 2016 Los Angeles auto show next week.Like other Jeep models to previously wear the Altitude badge, the 2017 Jeep Renegade Altitude lands on the lot with a host of exterior and interior features dolled up in Gloss Black. This includes the crossover’s 18-inch wheels, badging, seven grille rings, and taillamp surrounds. Although the Altitude is available in a variety of colors, the interior is limited to just one—black.Based on the $22,490 Renegade Latitude, the $23,385 Altitude includes features such as a rearview camera and proximity key with push-button start. A 160-hp 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine connected to a six-speed manual transmission is standard; however, $1330 buys a bigger, 180-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a nine-speed automatic. All-wheel drive is … [Read more...] about High ’n’ Dry: Jeep Renegade Adds Altitude and Deserthawk Trims
“We’ll take ‘Locations of Blanket Statements Made by Former Colonial Powers’ for $200, Alex.”“There’s nothing more French than North Africa, and there’s nothing more North African than desert. Seriously. Have you ever seen The Battle of Algiers? Have you ever seen Slayer’s Seasons in the Abyss video?”“What is the Jeep Renegade Desert Hawk’s Paris auto show debut?”Jeep’s little ute, a kissing cousin to the Fiat 500X, is built in Melfi, Italy, a quick trip over land and sea from Tunisia. Which is presumably why Jeep has decided to introduce the limited-edition Desert Hawk package at Paris. A riff on the off-roady Trailhawk package, the Trailhawk’s Desert Sand paint job offers a key to what this wee ute’s all about. In addition to the map of Moab on its hood, the Renegade also gets a U.S. Army–style star decal, presumably to remind the French of George S. Patton’s role in ridding … [Read more...] about Hold Me Closer, Tiny Patton: Jeep Launches Renegade Desert Hawk in Europe
