2019 Toyota Avalon First Drive: Your Road Trip Hero Has Arrived
After the 2019 Toyota Avalon was unveiled at the 2018 Detroit auto show, I was the only writer on our four-person editor panel to call it a "winner" in Cars.com's Winners and Losers auto show wrap-up. After driving the new Avalon and Avalon Hybrid at a Toyota media preview in San Diego, do I stand by that call? Related: 2019 Toyota Avalon Aims for Excitement I have a soft spot for big sedans and the Avalon certainly qualifies as that. It was time for a redesign, as my colleague, Cars.com reviewer Jennifer Geiger wrote in her recent review of the 2018 Avalon. Her conclusion was: "Wait till next year." She had specific gripes with the previous version mostly revolving around its multimedia system, climate controls, lack of flexible storage and price. The 2019 model directly addresses several of those issues but price... maybe not so much. The 2019 Avalon will be offered in four trim levels, in ascending order of price: XLE, XSE, Limited and Touring. The Avalon Hybrid, which gets a … [Read more...] about 2019 Toyota Avalon First Drive: Your Road Trip Hero Has Arrived
First Drive: 2019 Toyota Avalon
DEL MAR, California — Jimmy Durante Boulevard just north of San Diego is the perfect stretch of pavement to experience the 2019 Toyota Avalon.Like the street’s eponymous comedian/entertainer, the all-new fifth-generation sedan has a schnoz that only the Great Schnozzola could appreciate.“My nose isn’t big. I just happen to have a very small head,” the funny man used to say.If you compare the Toyota flagship’s new grille with the nose of a fighter jet, well it definitely looks small. But if you parked it next to a Lexus LS, its spindle grille would look tiny.Premium XLE and Limited trims of the 2019 Avalon feature a large slotted grille that’s as wide as the 805 Freeway, while sporty XSE and Touring models get a big, piano black mesh one. Hybrids get both plus grille shutters to help cool the engine.Head on, the grille appears to smile like a Cheshire cat with Triple-J LED headlamps for eyes above its side air intakes. Limited and Touring models … [Read more...] about First Drive: 2019 Toyota Avalon
2019 Toyota Avalon First Drive Review: A new hope
If the 2019 Toyota Avalon isn't fit enough to survive, then the entire full-size sedan species is doomed to extinction. It's really simple as that, because as the new-and-improved replacement for a car that was already well-entrenched as the segment benchmark, it stands the best chance of coaxing customers away from an onslaught of SUVs and similarly priced smaller sedans with fancier badges. Perhaps it could even snag a few people not yet old enough to collect Social Security. That last point is key, because at 64 years old, the current Avalon's average buyer is actually a few years older than the segment average. While there's certainly nothing wrong with building a car for retirees, one must also acknowledge that fixed incomes and well, the inevitable march of time, will erode your customer base even more than it has (from about 71,000 when the current generation was introduced to about 32,600 in 2017). So, while Toyota isn't trying to capture young buyers, knocking a few years off … [Read more...] about 2019 Toyota Avalon First Drive Review: A new hope
News: 2019 Toyota Avalon Hybrid Introduced in Detroit
Greater Efficiency and an All-New Look Shown in Detroit Toyota introduced its stunning all-new fifth-generation Avalon sedan yesterday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The radically redone full-size sedan retains its V6 and hybrid powertrains as it moves to the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) shared with the Camry and other newer models. The 5th gen Avalon Hybrid sports a more aggressive look The Toyota Hybrid System II (THS II) in the 2019 Toyota Avalon Hybrid features many high-tech improvements for greater fuel efficiency (though Toyota execs didn’t say how much). It combines a 2.5-liter Dynamic Force four-cylinder engine with a 650-volt electric motor and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Since the current Avalon is rated at 40 mpg city and the smaller new Camry on the updated chassis gets more than 50 mpg, would it be out of line to expect a 5 mpg boost for the new Avalon? — ed) For 2019, the new four-cylinder Dynamic … [Read more...] about News: 2019 Toyota Avalon Hybrid Introduced in Detroit
