Thieves in the Dallas area pulled off a heist this weekend that saw millions of dollars worth of valuables lifted from a local jewlery store. The burglars relied on a remarkably simple move to break into the store, according to one of the managers of the business. American Jewelers is located in the Town East Mall in Mesquite, a suburb about 20 minutes east of Dallas. The store saw massive losses after alleged burglars broke into the store and lifted a huge portion of its inventory. The heist happened sometime between when the store closed on Friday and when employees showed up to open it again on Saturday morning. In fact, Paul Hash, a manager at American Jewelers, told the Dallas Morning News that employees only learned of the burglary when they arrived to open the store Saturday morning. The thieves made off with about $2 million worth of jewelry, the Morning News reported Tuesday. While heist movies typically feature elaborate plots to evade guards and dodge state of … [Read more...] about Dallas thieves stole millions in jewelry by busting through walls

The best drinks at Sipple, Houston’s only non-alcoholic bottle shop
When Sipple, Texas' first non-alcoholic bottle shop, opened in Houston's Rice Village in October 2021 , owners Danny and Helenita Frounfelkner knew the city was ready, but didn't know exactly how thirsty it was for booze-free drinks. As it turns out, the answer was: very. Business has boomed at the store, which carries dozens of non-alcoholic spirits, beers, wines, CBD seltzers and other beverages that barely even existed five years ago, before "sober curiosity" became a movement. But people have been abstaining from alcohol—permanently or temporarily, and for endless reasons—for eons before this new trend. So it's about time shops and restaurants around town start catering to them . On a recent Wednesday evening, between greeting customers, Helenita relays that Sipple is having its busiest time yet—a result of Dry January coinciding with a well-read Texas Monthly profile on the store. A half-hour before closing, an older couple walks in, looking apprehensive and … [Read more...] about The best drinks at Sipple, Houston’s only non-alcoholic bottle shop
Texas Republicans want to ban these foreign-born citizens from buying land
Around 100 Houstonians and elected officials held a rally in front of City Hall on Monday to express their opposition to Texas' Senate Bill 147 —a measure that, if passed, would ban citizens and foreign entities from China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia from buying land in the state. A one-page bill drafted by state Sen. Lois Kolkhorst’s (R-Brenham) explains that the legislation applies to any governmental entity and individual citizens of those countries. In addition to citizens and governmental entities, this bill would impact companies tied "directly or indirectly" to the government of those four countries. Speakers at Monday's event said this legislation resembles previous anti-foreigner legislation such as the Chinese Exclusion Act and stokes hate against the Asian community in particular. "We should target no one," state Rep. Gene Wu (D-Houston) said. "We should not target China; we should not target Russia; we should not target any place because their people from … [Read more...] about Texas Republicans want to ban these foreign-born citizens from buying land

Is the New York Times’ 36 Hours in Houston as bad as people say?
Houstonians who might refer to themselves as terminally online are once again abuzz with opinions about yet another national media outlet's attempts to summarize the city's greatness in just a few thousand words. This week, it was the New York Times, which published the latest edition of their "36 Hours In" travel series , this time ending up in Houston. I always brace myself when these pieces come out—whatever mood I'm in, I'm sure to get a bit more sour. Houston is a wonderful, complex place that is often misunderstood by parachuters, although I was relieved to read that the author "grew up in Houston and lives there today," per a note at the very top, probably to brace themselves for the onslaught of online clapbacks from locals. There were indeed some infuriating omissions in this "36 Hours in Houston" and definitely a few headscratchers, but I'll admit to not being as annoyed by this guide as I typically have been in the past. Stick with me. My biggest pet peeve about … [Read more...] about Is the New York Times’ 36 Hours in Houston as bad as people say?
