All 21 F1 Drivers of the Day in 2018 – as voted by the fans
Australia: Fernando Alonso 1/21 Photo by: Sutton Images Started: 10th Finished: 5th In his own words: It was a good race today, especially considering where we started. The last couple of years have been difficult, and I think the winter has been difficult as well. We switched to the Renault engine quite late and the team had to react very quickly to redesign some of the parts at the rear end, and now we've come here and both cars have scored points – one in the top five. We should be proud of that, but I think there's a lot more to come from McLaren. We didn't maximise the full potential nor squeeze everything out of the package today. This is only our first race together with Renault, and some updates will come in the next few races. We can start to look ahead a little bit and Red Bull will be the next target. As I said before, this race is probably our lowest performance of this season as things are going to get better and better. Obviously, today we got lucky with the … [Read more...] about All 21 F1 Drivers of the Day in 2018 – as voted by the fans
Top 10 F1 to Indy car converts ranked
Romain Grosjean will follow in esteemed footsteps when he makes the switch to U.S. open-wheel racing this season, the well-trodden path from Formula 1 most recently traversed by Marcus Ericsson. But who is the greatest F1-to-Indy convert? Drivers must first have competed in F1 to be eligible for our list, which rules out 1993 McLaren driver Michael Andretti and his 1978 world champion father Mario. The 1988 series champion and 1985 Indianapolis 500 winner Danny Sullivan is also ineligible, his Indy car debut in 1982 coming one year before his single F1 season at Tyrrell, while Juan Pablo Montoya and Sebastien Bourdais each won Indy car titles before moving to F1 and subsequently returning Stateside. When considering the order of the list, F1 achievement isn't factored in - it's purely down to how successfully the driver made the transition to Indy car. Making an instant impression is rewarded, and so too is longevity. On that basis, despite Fernando Alonso’s impressive debut in … [Read more...] about Top 10 F1 to Indy car converts ranked
Johansson’s radical proposal to make F1 awesome again – Part 3
Make the drivers more accessible The drivers are the stars and they will always be more important to the fans than the cars or the teams. Every series other than F1 has some form of planned fan engagement either the day before the race weekend starts or for an hour at some point during the race weekends. Make it compulsory for each driver to do a certain number of days as part of the super license. It’s a pain for the drivers but in the long run it will benefit everybody. Make it mandatory for the promoters, broadcasters and drivers to provide X hours of promotional appearances prior to each race in each country. By forcing / helping each promoter to better publicize the races, each driver will be helping themselves by building a better audience and a more valuable ecosystem. Cross-promote the drivers in other forms of entertainment in order to gain a larger following and new demographics. Make the racing less predictable By implementing some of the rule changes I have … [Read more...] about Johansson’s radical proposal to make F1 awesome again – Part 3
Formula 1 posts record $386m loss for 2020 season
Liberty Media's full-year financial results, which were released on Friday, reveal that F1's income tumbled by 44% for a total loss of $386m - compared with the previous year. Overall revenue crashed from $2022m in 2019 to $1145m last season, while the modest profit of $17m in 2019 turned into an operating loss of $386m after the teams were paid. The total payments shared between the 10 teams fell from $1012m in 2019 to just $711m last year. Liberty explained: "Team payments decreased in the full year driven by the contraction in F1 revenue and the associated impact on the calculation of variable elements of team payments. "Team payments in 2020 included one-time fees paid to teams upon signing the 2021 Concorde Agreement." The huge dive in race promotion fees was reflected in the fall in their percentage share of F1's primary revenue, down from 30% of the total in 2019 to just 12% last year. Most races either paid no fee, or a renegotiated one-off lower figure. … [Read more...] about Formula 1 posts record $386m loss for 2020 season
