F1’s global head of race promotions Chloe Targett-Adams stressed that the event is part of the country’s Vision 2030 strategy, which is a programme to reduce its dependence on its oil reserves and invest in other areas. The first race is scheduled for December 5 on a street circuit in Jeddah, but it will move to a purpose-built venue at Qiddiya in 2023. “In terms of Saudi Arabia, it was phenomenal to be able to get that deal agreed and signed and announced during the pandemic,” Targett-Adams said in a Blackbook web seminar. “It's somewhere we're really excited about going racing, and it's a longer-term vision of how we want to build our sport in the Middle East. “We've got two amazing partners in the Middle East already on the promotion side, with Abu Dhabi and Bahrain, both long-term relationships, incredibly successful. “And so to bring on a new Middle Eastern race in a location like Saudi with a hugely young demographic, vast population, interest in the … [Read more...] about F1: Saudi GP to be on calendar for at least a decade

Verstappen and Perez unsure F1 needs ‘risky’ sprint races
F1 is currently evaluating the introduction of sprint races on the Saturday of three events this year, running a 100km race that would set the grid for the Sunday grand prix. The plan received “broad support” from teams at the latest F1 Commission meeting, with further details currently being outlined by a working group. Officials have identified races in Canada, Italy and Brazil as being the trial events for sprint races in 2021. The proposals have received lukewarm support from drivers so far, with Red Bull duo Verstappen and Perez becoming the latest drivers to air their uncertainty over the idea. Hamilton: Singapore “almost worse than Monaco” to overtake
Early race leader Charles Leclerc 's tactic of backing up the field to help better preserve his tyres meant everyone was lapping several seconds off the pace in a long train of cars. And for Hamilton , the lack of passing spots was a key factor in limiting the potential for excitement. "This unfortunately, it is a really beautiful place that we come to and it is such a great track, but it is worse than Monaco almost. Was it as boring as Monaco to watch that race?" he asked reporters after the race. "Maybe we need to change the last corner so we stop in a hairpin and we have a tight hairpin to go around. "The [current] last corner, you cannot follow and it is a sequence of five quite fast corners that come up after where you never get close. That will make it even more special this track maybe."
