It’s one piece in a larger EV puzzle. Volkswagen’s line of all-electric cars, which falls under the ID branding, will expand in 2025. Today, the company announced that it’s developing a new model that’ll slot beneath the ID.3 in the lineup and that’ll it’ll arrive in 2025. VW didn’t divulge any more information about the car, though the announcement didn’t come as a total surprise as there’ve been rumors of such a model in development. A report last March suggested that the development of the ID.1 was already underway . Allegedly, it’d offer two battery options – 24- and 36-kilowatt hours with a maximum range of 185 miles (298 kilometers). Then in November, a new report corroborated the one from March, relying on an unnamed company source that said VW would expand its lineup with two sub-ID.3 models . The smallest would replace the Up!, while the larger one, pegged to be called the ID.2, was rumored to replace the Polo. VW gets 1.6 TDI fix approval and says diesel trick is legal in Europe
Both software and hardware changes are necessary. With the official approval of The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) in Germany, VW is getting ready to kick off another recall campaign caused by the messy and costly Dieselgate . This time around, it involves a total of 2.6 million European cars equipped with the turbodiesel four-cylinder, 1.6-liter TDI engine from the now infamous EA 189 family. It’s installed in a wide array of models from Audi, Skoda, and SEAT, as well as in cars from the core brand. VW’s engineers will have to apply a “software update” to make things right once again, and owners of affected cars are going to be contacted by the company in the weeks to come. In addition, the engine will have to go through some hardware changes as a so-called "flow conditioner" will be affixed upstream of the air mass meter, a procedure which will require less than a half an hour of working time. With both software and hardware modifications in place, cars fitted … [Read more...] about VW gets 1.6 TDI fix approval and says diesel trick is legal in Europe
Skyrocketing Catalytic Converter Costs Leads To Increased Theft
Don’t read this if you’re a thief. It may not surprise you that just about every car on the road today will have a catalytic converter . Tasked to reduce the environmental impact of the exhaust fumes coming out of your tailpipe, these devices utilize incredibly precious metals like palladium, rhodium, and platinum. Therefore you guessed it, these metals are in impossibly high demand and therefore extremely valuable. The New York Times reports that while palladium was valued at $500 five years ago, its value is currently floating somewhere between $2,500 and $3,000. As such, thieves have been getting increasingly daring to get their hands on catalytic converters; and that’s before we mention the fact that rhodium is currently standing at over $20,000 an ounce. Therefore, it might not be surprising to hear that crimes involving catalytic converter theft have effectively blown up nationwide. After losing the precious metals from their vehicles, … [Read more...] about Skyrocketing Catalytic Converter Costs Leads To Increased Theft
Johansson’s radical proposal to make F1 awesome again – Part 1
This is an effort to offer my views on the current state of motorsport, and Formula 1 in particular. For some time now, and for whatever reason, there seem to be a lot of negative comments and chatter from the people inside the business as well as from fans all over the world. Why is that? How did we arrive at this situation from a time not that long ago when things were seemingly mostly positive, viewership was huge, the cars were fast and spectacular to watch, we had some great personalities in the paddock, superstar drivers racing the cars and plenty of action and drama on the race track, both between the teams and the drivers? Money was flowing into the business and global corporate sponsors as well as manufacturers were all lining up to be part of the show. Teams were selling at a huge premium and everyone involved in the business was prospering. Of course, there is not a simple answer to any of this. For sure, the majority of negative comments today is in part due to … [Read more...] about Johansson’s radical proposal to make F1 awesome again – Part 1

Ford's CEO predicts electrified vehicle sales will exceed those of internal combustion engines in the next 15 years Ford is kicking off the new year be announcing seven new electrified vehicles that the Blue Oval plans to introduce in the next five years. While the hybrid versions of the Mustang and F-150 will be the heavy hitters of the group, they’ll be just part of the $4.5 billion investment in electrified vehicles in the near future. The firm will also develop wireless charging technology that reportedly “makes recharging an electric vehicle as easy as pulling into a parking spot" and EV fleet management technology. “Our investments and expanding lineup reflect our view that global offerings of electrified vehicles will exceed gasoline-powered vehicles within the next 15 years,” said Ford President and CEO Mark Fields.
