Dwan Mathis -- a 4-star recruit from Michigan and OSU's lone 2019 QB commit -- says he had a few conversations with Meyer ... and it was clear to him the coach's retirement was necessary. "He knew that him going out there was a health risk to his body and everything," Mathis tells TMZ Sports ... "So, I said, 'Coach, you gotta do what's best for you and your family.'" Mathis says it was apparent from both their talks and when Urban was on the sidelines this season that the coach was fighting a battle he was struggling to win. "Really, it was evident what was wrong with him," Mathis says. "Really, just him with the headaches and the migraines and, you know, college football stadiums get real loud. Exclusive Details Lincoln Riley tried to poach ... so did Arkansas and Notre Dame -- but Ohio State's top recruit (a stud WR from Texas) says he's sticking with the Buckeyes, despite Urban Meyer's retirement. It's great news for the Buckeyes -- Wilson is a 5-star recruit who some say is the best wide receiver prospect to ever commit to Ohio State. It's been a wild year at OSU -- between the Zach Smith scandal, Meyer's suspension, and now Urban stepping down -- but Wilson says he's all set to sign later this month regardless. Why?? The senior from Lake Travis H.S. in Texas explains it's all 'cause of the man OSU tabbed to replace Urban -- Ryan Day. "If coach Day is going to be the head coach, then I'm 100 percent done. I trust in him, I love him." Other schools tried to sway him from that opinion ... the 5-star recruit said Oklahoma, Arkansas, Notre … [Read more...] about Ohio State Top Recruit Staying Put After Urban Meyer Retirement, OU Tried To Poach!

"I had the impression this last season that his health was not as good as he liked it to be." In fact ... the CBS News legend says he thinks the rigors of the Zach Smith controversy really took a toll on the coach who once left a job at Florida because of complications with a brain cyst. Ohio State says it'll replace Meyer with offensive coordinator Ryan Day ... but Rather tells us he doesn't necessarily think this is the end of Meyer's run on a football sideline. "Who knows? He may yet come out of retirement and coach again." … [Read more...] about Dan Rather Not Surprised By Urban Meyer’s Retirement, I Could See His Health Failing

EXCLUSIVE Ohio Senator Rob Portman says he has tons of respect for the investigators in the Urban Meyer case -- and believes the suspension was the result of a "fair process."' When asked if he felt the 3-game suspension was too light considering the case involved domestic violence -- the 62-year-old Republican told us he trusts the judgment of the OSU board. "I don't know all the details, so you have to respect the process and say, 'Was it a fair process?' And, I think it was."
