McLaren drivers hail team’s ‘outstanding progress’ after first double podium
Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri praised McLaren’s progress this season after securing second and third in the Japanese Grand Prix. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free The two McLaren drivers appeared on the podium together for the first time this season. Norris finishing behind winner Max Verstappen and Piastri taking his first podium in his rookie season. Norris hailed McLaren’s first double podium result since the 2021 Italian Grand Prix as an “amazing day” for his team. “A P2 and a P3 – we couldn’t have asked for any more,” Norris said. “The team did an amazing job. “My start was very good. I almost had Max, but Max is Max as well, so I didn’t have a lot of chance in turn two. So I tried, but the pace was extremely strong today compared to everyone. We’re not close to Max, but we’re not miles away either, so it was a very good day.” After McLaren started the season struggling to score points, Norris said the result was a sign of the constant … [Read more...] about McLaren drivers hail team’s ‘outstanding progress’ after first double podium
Mercedes’ call to help Russell using DRS “made no sense” – Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton said Mercedes made the wrong call when he was told to slow down and help his team mate by giving him the opportunity to use his Drag Reduction System. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free The two Mercedes drivers were being pursued by Carlos Sainz Jnr in the closing stages of the Japanese Grand Prix. George Russell ran at the front of the queue but his tyres were more worn as he had only pitted once. Hamilton and Sainz behind him had the benefit of fresher rubber. Hamilton said it was inevitable Russell was going to be passed by Sainz and Mercedes should have waved him past his teammate at the first opportunity, so he could build up a gap over the pursuing Ferrari. Instead he spent several laps behind Russell and once he was allowed past, Hamilton was told to back off so Russell could use DRS. However Sainz was still able to overtake the second Mercedes. Sainz used a similar DRS ploy to good effect when he won the Singapore Grand Prix last … [Read more...] about Mercedes’ call to help Russell using DRS “made no sense” – Hamilton

Another Verstappen win makes Red Bull champions again as Piastri reaches podium
Max Verstappen took another comfortable victory in the Japanese Grand Prix ahead of the two McLaren drivers to win the constructors’ championship for Red Bull. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Oscar Piastri secured his first podium finish in his rookie season, taking the chequered flag third behind team mate Lando Norris. Despite Sergio Perez failing to finish after collisions with two other drivers, Verstappen’s win was easily enough to clinch the title for his team. At the start of the race, Piastri lined up alongside pole winner Verstappen on the front row. When the lights went out, the McLaren drivers attacked the Red Bull from both sides, Piastri on the inside, Norris the outside, but Verstappen held his lead as Norris moved ahead of his team mate into second. Back in the pack, there were multiple collisions between Sergio Perez and Lewis Hamilton and, further back, Valtteri Bottas, Kevin Magnussen and Alexander Albon. Red Bull break record with sixth constructors’ championship win
Red Bull have clinched the 2023 Formula 1 constructors’ championship after winning the Japanese Grand Prix. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Max Verstappen’s victory in today’s race ensures they can no longer be overhauled by their rivals in the standings. Red Bull have secured the title for the sixth time since they entered the series in 2005. Having dominated the 2023 championship, they have ended the title fight with six races remaining. This is earlier than any team has ever won the title. McLaren and Ferrari won the constructors’ title with five races to spare in 1988 and 2004 respectively. “For us the most amazing year,” said team boss Christian Horner. “It’s all testimony to these guys and all the men and women back in the factory in Milton Keynes. “To Red Bull, to all our partners, it’s the collection of an incredible effort of everybody doing their bit to achieve results like we’ve done and of course Max is just on another level at the … [Read more...] about Red Bull break record with sixth constructors’ championship win
Perez given four penalty points for two incidents in Japanese Grand Prix
Sergio Perez collected four penalty points in a single race after being involved in two separate incidents in the Japanese Grand Prix. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free The Red Bull driver was penalised for overtaking Fernando Alonso under Safety Car conditions on his way into the pits and colliding with Kevin Magnussen at the hairpin. Following Perez’s retirement from the race Red Bull returned him to the track, 25 laps down, in order to ensure he served the second of two five-second time penalties he was given for the incidents. He also received two penalty points for each, moving him onto a total of seven. Any driver who reaches 12 penalty points in a 12-month period receives an automatic one-race ban. “It was just a disastrous weekend,” Perez told F1TV. “It all started into turn one with a really bad start and I was squeezed down and I was just a passenger then in a sandwich. I think we carried a lot of damage in the car as well and that just made it … [Read more...] about Perez given four penalty points for two incidents in Japanese Grand Prix
