The second one-hour session of Friday day at Imola featured a number of unusual developments, as the Mercedes drivers did not find major gains using the soft tyres on their mid-session qualifying simulation runs, while Ferrari's Charles Leclerc actually set FP2's best time, but had it deleted for a track limits offence. Leclerc then brought the session to an early end when he crashed at the second Rivazza corner in final minutes. Much like in the day's opening session, the first 15 minutes of the session were very busy, with several drivers enjoying time at the top of the standings. George Russell led the pack out and duly set the opening lap of FP2 at 1m22.939s, which was soon bettered by Kimi Raikkonen's 1m20.118s. Carlos Sainz and Leclerc brought the P1 benchmark into the 1m17s bracket, with the latter's 1m17.076s taking him to the top of the times as he followed his teammate around the 3-mile track. Pukekohe favourite to host Supercars in 2021
As it stands the event is simply listed as the Auckland SuperSprint on the calendar, with Supercars yet to formally declare if the races will take place at Pukekohe or Hampton Downs. Motorsport.com understands that Pukekohe is now the front-runner to host the Aussie series for its annual trip across the Tasman. That would align with the event's backing from Auckland Tourism, Events & Economic Development (ATEED), with Pukekohe in the Auckland local government region while Hampton Downs is in neighbouring Waikato. Pukekohe is the traditional home of Supercars in NZ, however a date bungle involving local legislation forced Supercars to move its proposed 2020 ANZAC Day event to Hampton Downs. That event was ultimately cancelled due to the global health crisis and strict border controls in both Australia and New Zealand. There's plenty of optimism around this year's event going ahead due to the recent announcement of a travel bubble between the two countries . … [Read more...] about Pukekohe favourite to host Supercars in 2021
Supercars Gen3 chassis breaks cover
This particular chassis was built by GM homologation team Triple Eight Race Engineering, and will underpin the prototype Supercars-spec Chevrolet Camaro. The most significant change compared to the current chassis is removable front and rear sections, which will allow faster repairs on race weekends. There are also safety upgrades including a more central driving position to move the driver further from the right-hand door and a hatch in the roof to allow better access for medical crews. The chassis is also visibly lower than its predecessor as the category moves away from its sedan roots and properly embraces two-door muscle cars like the Camaro and the Ford Mustang. “We’re excited to present this latest milestone in the Gen3 programme,” said Supercars CEO Sean Seamer. "I'd like to thank the team that have put in thousands of hours to reach this point, particularly Triple Eight Race Engineering. “We’re proud of the developments with regards to safety and … [Read more...] about Supercars Gen3 chassis breaks cover
