Arizona city cuts off a neighborhood’s water supply amid drought
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 14 SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The survival - or at least the basic sustenance - of hundreds in a desert community amid the horse ranches and golf courses outside Phoenix now rests on a 54-year-old man with a plastic bucket of quarters. John Hornewer picked up a quarter and put it in the slot. The lone water hose at a remote public filling station sputtered to life and splashed 73 gallons into the steel tank of Hornewer's water hauling truck. After two minutes, it stopped. Hornewer, one of two main suppliers responsible for delivering water to a community of more than 2,000 homes known as Rio Verde Foothills, fished out another quarter. "It so shouldn't be like this," Hornewer said. Some living here amid the cactus and creosote bushes see themselves as the first domino to fall as the Colorado River tips further into crisis. … [Read more...] about Arizona city cuts off a neighborhood’s water supply amid drought
Police in Georgia arrest suspect in Mall of America shooting
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (AP) — A suspect wanted in connection with a fatal shooting at the Mall of America in December was arrested in Georgia on Tuesday, police said. Bloomington, Minnesota, Police Chief Booker Hodges said during a news conference Tuesday that the 17-year-old suspect was taken into custody in Decatur, Georgia, by federal and state law enforcement officials. Hudson was shot eight times and died during an altercation inside the mall’s Nordstrom store. Witnesses, mall security guards and first responders tried to save him. Customers scrambled for safety and the nation’s largest shopping center went into lockdown on one of the final days of the holiday shopping season. Anger grows in Virginia city where first-grader shot teacher
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) — When a 6-year-old shot and wounded his first-grade teacher in this shipbuilding city near Virginia’s coast, the community reacted with collective shock. But the sentiment has percolated into rage from parents and particularly from teachers, with many lambasting school administrators Tuesday night for what they called a misguided emphasis on attendance and other education statistics over the safety of children and staff. The anger in Newport News is bubbling up during a decadeslong pendulum swing that's been moving American schools away from suspensions and expulsions, experts say. But some school systems are still seeking a “happy medium” between strict discipline and a gentler approach. During a three-hour school board meeting dedicated solely to public comment, Newport News teachers and parents said students who assaulted classmates … [Read more...] about Anger grows in Virginia city where first-grader shot teacher
How Houston’s The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation got so famous
The homey universe of Ninfa's Houston has had a huge impact on food culture in and far beyond H-Town. For thousands of long-time fans of the legendary The Original Ninfa's on Navigation , this slogan sums it up: "The Best Mexican Food in Texas Since Texas was in Mexico!" The self-taught chef responsible for that food was Ninfa Laurenzo. Born Rodriguez in Harlingen, Texas, she eventually earned the nickname "Mama Ninfa" for the way she cared for the children in her community and the diners at her Houston restaurant. Mama Ninfa went to the big kitchen in the sky in 2001, but she will live on forever in culinary history for making fajitas a wildly popular staple of Tex-Mex cuisine . Ninfa and husband Domenic Thomas Laurenzo opened a tortilla and pizza factory in Second Ward after moving to Houston in 1949, and began selling their fresh packaged pizzas in grocery stores. "My parents also packaged masa harina and bottled chile con queso and hot sauce," said daughter Phyllis … [Read more...] about How Houston’s The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation got so famous
German caution on Ukraine arms rooted in political culture
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 BERLIN (AP) — Germany has become one of Ukraine's leading weapons suppliers in the 11 months since Russia's invasion, but Chancellor Olaf Scholz also has gained a reputation for hesitating to take each new step — generating impatience among allies. Berlin’s perceived foot-dragging, most recently on the Leopard 2 battle tanks that Kyiv has long sought, is rooted at least partly in a post-World War II political culture of military caution, along with present-day worries about a possible escalation in the war. On Friday, Germany inched closer to a decision to deliver the tanks, ordering a review of its Leopard stocks in preparation for a possible green light. There was still no commitment, however. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius rejected the suggestion that Germany was standing in the way but said, “we have to balance all the pros and contras before we decide things like that, … [Read more...] about German caution on Ukraine arms rooted in political culture
Speaker McCarthy adds hard-right Republicans to House Rules Committee
WASHINGTON - The House's powerful Rules Committee has moved to the right, according to lists shared by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Monday. The committee, which will be chaired by Rep. Tom Cole (R-Okla.), includes Reps. Chip Roy (R-Texas), Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Ralph Norman (R-S.C.). Cole said Monday night on social media that he was delighted to "welcome a diverse slate" of Republican lawmakers to the committee. He added that they will work to "restore regular order and ensure thorough debate" in the chamber. Roy and Norman were among the group of Republican holdouts who withheld support for McCarthy's speakership during the 15 rounds of voting earlier this month until after he'd made several concessions to the more extremist wing of the party. "This was about empowering people - empowering rank-and-file members," Roy said after the speakership votes were completed, having voted against McCarthy 11 times before supporting him in the final rounds. What are the Wizards doing? No, seriously, what are they doing?
Give the Washington Wizards this: They aren't boring. Some NBA franchises prefer to comfort the anxiety of their fan bases with rebuilding plans. They'll tank games and hoard high draft picks, as the Philadelphia 76ers did during "The Process" days. Or they'll make painful decisions and trade away superstars while embracing a youth movement, as the Oklahoma City Thunder is doing now. This humdrum way of running a franchise, which provides a sense of stability for a fan base and even a vision for the future, might be for other cities. But not here. No, ma'am. In Washington, we want mystery. Give us instability and a nebulous future, please and thank you. A vision? Pfft! That's for losers! We prefer to spend hours in front of our crazy walls, connecting red strings from the Issuf Sanon draft pick to the Isaiah Thomas era and trying to unearth the truth: Was taking Jan Vesely sixth overall in 2011 just a way to distract us from the government bugging our landlines - or at least … [Read more...] about What are the Wizards doing?
