Scott Applewhite, File) WASHINGTON — The Justice Department has declined to prosecute former FBI Director James Comey over his handling of a series of memos he wrote that documented personal interactions with President Donald Trump, a person familiar with the matter said Thursday. The memos, some of which Justice Department officials later determined contained classified information, were written in the weeks and months before Comey’s firing by Trump in May 2017. A week after he was fired, Comey authorized a friend to describe the contents of one of the memos to the news media. He has said his hope in having one of the memos become public was to spur the appointment of a special counsel to … [Read more...] about No prosecution over memos for former FBI Director James Comey

San Diego’s FBI field office got a new leader Tuesday with the announcement of Scott Brunner as the new special agent in charge. Brunner has been with the federal law enforcement agency nearly 24 years, and his appointment to San Diego by FBI Director Christopher Wray marks a return to the field office where Brunner spent about four years last decade supervising a strike force that tackled major Mexican drug traffickers. Most recently, Brunner was stationed in Washington, D.C., where as deputy assistant director of the FBI’s Critical Incident Response Group he was a drone expert. He testified about the threat of drones in front of a Senate homeland security committee last year, and is set to earn a master’s degree in unmanned systems this summer from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. Brunner replaces Suzanne Turner, who was the acting special agent in charge since February, when John Brown left the post after about a year. Brown was promoted to assistant director … [Read more...] about FBI director names new head of San Diego field office
Michael Balsamo and Eric Tucker Associated Press Published 5:43 PM EDT Oct 4, 2018 Washington – The FBI has wrapped up its background investigation of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, but much of what it did remains a mystery, including its decisions about whom to interview. Investigation details have not been publicly disclosed. Republicans say the probe was thorough and reinforces their support of President Donald Trump’s nominee. But Democrats decry it as incomplete and constrained, and Kavanaugh’s accusers say the FBI didn’t interview witnesses who could have corroborated their accounts. Republicans say nine people were interviewed. Six have been identified by The Associated Press and other news outlets. Among those not interviewed were Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, the California college professor who testified last week to Congress that a drunken Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were high school students. Kavanaugh denies the … [Read more...] about Who was questioned by the FBI in the Kavanaugh probe?
Eric Tucker Associated Press Published 11:13 p.m. UTC May 31, 2018 Washington – Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe drafted a memo on circumstances leading up to the firing of his onetime boss, James Comey, a person familiar with the situation told the Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday to discuss a secret document that has been turned over to special counsel Robert Mueller. His team is investigating whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russia during the 2016 presidential election and whether the president sought to obstruct that inquiry through actions including the firing of Comey last May. The memo concerns a conversation that McCabe had with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein about Rosenstein’s preparations for Comey’s firing. Rosenstein played an important role in that episode, having written a memo faulting Comey for his handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation that the White House held up as … [Read more...] about AP: Ex-FBI deputy McCabe wrote memo on Comey firing
President Donald Trump told former FBI Director James Comey that he had serious concerns about the judgment of his first national security adviser, Michael Flynn, and Trump's chief of staff asked days later if Flynn's communications were being monitored under a secret surveillance warrant, according to memos maintained by Comey and obtained by The Associated Press.Trump also told Comey that Russian President Vladimir Putin told him that Russia had "some of the most beautiful hookers in the world" even as he adamantly, and repeatedly, distanced himself from a salacious allegation involving prostitutes in Moscow, the documents state. The 15 pages of documents contain new details about a series of interactions with Trump that Comey found so unnerving that he documented them in writing. Those encounters in the weeks before Comey's May 2017 firing include a Trump Tower discussion about a possible encounter between Trump and prostitutes in Moscow; a White House dinner at which Comey says … [Read more...] about What did former FBI director write about his meetings with Trump?
