There is no shortage of choice when buying a modern performance car. Two-door, rear-wheel-drive coupes encompass a wide selection of makes and models and a new YouTube video has an unlikely pair facing off against each other– a 2023 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and a 2023 BMW M2. Powering the Camaro ZL1 is Chevrolet's supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine. It makes 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque, way more than the BMW . However, the extra power comes with a disadvantage– a higher curb weight. The Camaro weighs 3,886 pounds. Gallery: 2023 BMW M2: Review 16 Photos The BMW is down on power with its much smaller engine. Its twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine cranks out 453 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. It's also lighter at 3,750 lbs. Both cars power their rear wheels through their respective six-speed manual transmissions. The team’s debut came in Monaco, where McLaren put his car tenth on the grid. He only went nine laps before an oil leak ended his day, but did briefly make it up to sixth place after some thrilling wheel-to-wheel action. His short time in the race was also recorded for the ‘Grand Prix’ film that was released in cinemas later that year. Later, points finishes at the British and United States grands prix meant McLaren finished … [Read more...] about Two races, no points: How 2023 compares to McLaren’s worst starts to a season
F1 drivers explain why they agreed to race in Saudi Arabia despite “concerns” over attack
The Grand Prix Drivers’ Association has issued a statement explaining how they arrived at the decision to continue the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix following yesterday’s missile strike. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free The FIA and Formula 1 reacted to the explosion 10 kilometres from the Jeddah Corniche Circuit during yesterday’s first practice session by insisting the event would go ahead . Several of their team principals returned to join the discussion. As the meeting broke up the consensus appeared to be that the event would continue, despite the concerns that had been aired. ‘We were built for racing, unlike Vegas’: COTA boss not concerned by new F1 rivals
Just this past weekend, the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas held one of its biggest events on its annual calendar: the NASCAR Cup Series. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Featuring a handful of special guest drivers including F1 champions Jenson Button and Kimi Raikkonen and multiple IMSA champion and Daytona 24 Hours winner Jordan Taylor, it was one of several major international motorsport events being held at the now ten-year-old circuit in 2023 – including the United States Grand Prix, which will take place in October. After a decade of the US Grand Prix at COTA – interrupted only by Covid – Formula 1 appears to have finally found a solid footing in America. Rather than fizzle out like so many other attempts to establish a US race over the decades, attendance at COTA has grown over recent years to the point where it now boasts the largest crowd of the season in terms of total attendance over the race weekend. F1’s arrival at COTA in 2012 … [Read more...] about ‘We were built for racing, unlike Vegas’: COTA boss not concerned by new F1 rivals
Nato to race using number 17 in tribute to Bianchi
Nissan driver Norman Nato has chosen to race as number 17 in his return to Formula E next year as a tribute to Jules Bianchi , his fellow French racer who died seven years ago. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Bianchi suffered serious head injuries in a crash during the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix and died nine months later. He raced with the number earlier in his career but had number 71 on his car during his rookie FE campaign in 2021 with Venturi, as Nyck de Vries was already using 17. Now he will get to use his preferred number for his second season in the series, as de Vries has left FE for Formula 1. In a social media post Nato said he was “happy and proud to race under number 17 in FIA Formula E”. “This number means a lot to me. I started in karting and won championships with the 17. Jules also raced in F1 with this number which makes it even more special for me. Can’t wait to get started.” The number 17 was Bianchi’s fourth choice. Mercedes fears it has lost race-day F1 tyre edge over Ferrari
In the early phase of the season, the Mercedes would have the edge in races because its W14 car was much less harsh on its tyres than the Ferrari SF-23. However, as Ferrari has made gains in understanding why its 2023 challenger was so hard on its rubber early on, its race pace has improved dramatically. And with the two teams now locked in a fight for runners-up in the constructors' championship, the switch in car characteristic could prove critical as their fight plays out over the remaining six races of the campaign. At the recent Japanese Grand Prix, where tyre degradation was a critical factor in deciding the pace on Sunday, Ferrari showed how on top of things it was as Charles Leclerc finished ahead of the Mercedes lead car of Lewis Hamilton . This was a result that Mercedes trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin believed proved that Ferrari was no longer behind with its management of tyre degradation. Shovlin reckoned that Mercedes' lack of … [Read more...] about Mercedes fears it has lost race-day F1 tyre edge over Ferrari
Sebastian Vettel’s F1 motivation questioned with other racing offers on table
Former F1 racer Marc Surer believes Sebastian Vettel will not return to Formula 1 as it “doesn’t fit” with his outlook on the environment. In the latter stages of his career, Vettel became known for speaking out on causes he believes in, most notably when it comes to climate change and the environment. A self-confessed hypocrite, Vettel seemed increasingly at odds with his choice of career and since retiring in 2022 has done a couple of show runs in cars designed to run off sustainable fuels. Sebastian Vettel suggested for WEC outing not F1 comeback From almost the moment Vettel left the sport, fans and pundits alike were wondering whether we had seen the last of the four-time World Champion. Retiring at the age of 35, Vettel is younger than two of the drivers still racing in the sport and his appearance at the Suzuka circuit once again had people questioning whether he would be open to a comeback. It is a topic he has discussed himself, refusing to rule out the prospect … [Read more...] about Sebastian Vettel’s F1 motivation questioned with other racing offers on table
Porsche’s “Race Car Formula” Applied To Vision 357 R Concept
The Porsche Vision 357 debuted in January 2023 as part of the German automaker's year-long 75th anniversary celebration. It imagined the classic 356 model for the modern world riding on the underpinnings from a 718 Cayman GT4 RS. Artist Hakosan Design has now imagined a track version in a new rendering. The Vision 357 R is purely a what-if design. There's no indication that Porsche plans to build a concept like this, but Porsche has a particular formula for its track machines that Hakosan Design applies to this vehicle.
