Today in 1994: Roland Ratzenberger’s death stuns F1 – RaceFans

April 30, 2014 by www.racefans.net Leave a Comment

Rubens Barrichello spent Friday night at Maggiore hospital in Bologna after his sickening crash on the opening day of the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix . Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free On Saturday he returned to the Imola track, to widespread relief his injuries were not as serious as had first been feared. He would take no further part in the weekend, however, and that presented an opportunity for F1’s two smallest teams. With Barrichello’s withdrawal the 28-car field had been trimmed to 27, with room for all bar one of them on the grid. The Pacific and Simtek outfits, both appearing at their third races, had fought over the last two places on the grid at the two previous races. Now the chances were only one of their drivers would be left behind on Sunday. As has always been the case in Formula One the competitive urge is no less fierce at the back of the grid – it is merely conducted on a smaller scale by less well-funded teams. Simtek and Pacific each … [Read more...] about Today in 1994: Roland Ratzenberger’s death stuns F1 – RaceFans

A GOP power grab shatters 30 years of political progress for Black voters in Galveston County

May 20, 2022 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

TEXAS CITY — Miles inland from Galveston’s beaches and colorful vacation homes, a group of Black men dribble and jump on a covered basketball court, aiming for a chain-link net. Carver Park in Texas City, created during segregation, is considered the first African American county park in the state. It sits on land donated by descendants of freedmen who survived slavery and pioneered one of Texas’ oldest Black settlements, the footprint of which sits just a few blocks away. Until last year, the park sat at the heart of Galveston County’s Precinct 3 — the most diverse of the four precincts that choose the commissioners court, which governs the county along with the county judge. Precinct 3 was the lone seat in which Black and Hispanic voters, who make up about 38% of the county’s population, made up the majority of the electorate. The precinct sliced the middle of coastal Galveston County , stretching from the small city of Dickinson on the county’s northern end through … [Read more...] about A GOP power grab shatters 30 years of political progress for Black voters in Galveston County

It’s not worth the effort

May 21, 2022 by www.bangkokpost.com Leave a Comment

It's not worth the effort This year could be the toughest yet for Prayut Chan-o-cha's administration although reasons abound why the prime minister will be able to sidestep traps and complete the government's four-year term in March next year, according to Democrat Party veteran, Thepthai Senpong. Thepthai: Only court stands in way Mr Thepthai, a former MP for Nakhon Si Thammarat, has stepped back from active political roles after he was stripped of his MP status by the Constitutional Court over his 2020 conviction for fraud in the 2014 election for the Nakhon Si Thammarat provincial administration organisation chief. However, he has managed to offer his opinion on unfolding, significant developments in politics. So, with a political storm looming large for Gen Prayut in the coming months, he did not pass up the opportunity to take to Facebook to speak his mind. Last week, Mr Thepthai wrote that nothing stood in the way of Gen Prayut hanging around until the government … [Read more...] about It’s not worth the effort

Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo hit by cold wave

Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 SAO PAULO (AP) — In Rio de Janeiro, bold swimmers have been discouraged from diving into the cold ocean, while Sao Paulo authorities had to open up subway stations to accommodate homeless people as Brazil's south experienced unusually low temperatures on Friday. Temperatures on Friday morning dropped below 23 Fahrenheit (-5 Celsius) in Santa Catarina state, covering several municipalities with a thin layer of snow. Earlier this week a fierce hailstorm scared residents of Rio's west zone. For many Brazilians, accustomed to more clement weather in the tropical South American country, such events are considered extreme. Earlier this week, authorities in Rio Grande do Sul, canceled soccer matches, closed public buildings early and suspended classes in schools and universities due to fears of major disruptions. There, nearly 182,000 homes were left without … [Read more...] about Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo hit by cold wave

Astros continue home dominance against Rangers with win

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 HOUSTON (AP) — Houston catcher Martín Maldonado entered Thursday's game batting just .116. But with the Astros clinging to a one-run lead and the bases loaded with two outs in the eighth inning, manager Dusty Baker decided to stick with the veteran instead of using a pinch hitter. Baker's decision paid off when Maldonado hit a three-run double to give the Astros some insurance in a 5-1 win over the Texas Rangers. “Sometimes, in the right circumstance, you’ve got to give a confidence at-bat to somebody," Baker said. “It was a left-hander and fortunate for us Martín cleared the bases. You can’t hit for him all the time or else he’ll never get any confidence." Jose Altuve added a season-high four hits to back a strong start by Framber Valdez and help the Astros continue their home dominance of the Rangers. The victory extended Houston’s winning … [Read more...] about Astros continue home dominance against Rangers with win
