This compared with the 41 coronavirus-related fatalities and 6,463 new cases reported on Friday morning. The new case numbers did not include 6,637 positive results from antigen tests over the previous 24 hours, which would raise the total to 12,014. The new infections announced Saturday comprised 5,321 in the general population, 14 among prison inmates and two in arrivals from other countries. It sits on land donated by descendants of freedmen who survived slavery and pioneered one of Texas’ oldest Black settlements, the footprint of which sits just a few blocks away. Until last year, the park sat at the heart of Galveston County’s Precinct 3 — the most diverse of the four precincts that choose the commissioners court, which governs the county along with the county judge.
