The tweaks hidden inside Alpine’s new A521 F1 car

· March 4, 2021 ·

There are three things to really consider when looking at the latest batch of cars: how have the team handled the new regulations that reduce downforce by approximately 10%, how have they reconfigured the car under the homologation and token system and what progress have they made from an aerodynamic perspective aside from the change in regs. In terms of how this team has handled the new regulations, we’ll have to wait to see the physical car, as the renders released by the team fall short of revealing any of this detail. The floor clearly meets the dimensional requirements issued by the FIA but, like the floor it tested in Abu Dhabi, this falls short of displaying any of the aerodynamic trinkets that will likely occupy the space ahead of the rear tyre. “Awesome” 2018 IndyCar aerokit will improve racing, says Servia

· September 20, 2017 ·

The 2018 aerokit, which replaces the 2015-’17 manufacturer aerokits, has so far been tested by Servia (Schmidt Peterson Motorsports-Honda) and Montoya (Team Penske-Chevrolet) at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Iowa Speedway and Mid-Ohio. The kit’s fourth and final IndyCar-run test – as opposed to manufacturer test – will take place next Tuesday at Sebring, to represent a bumpy street course. But Servia says the kit has already impressed him. “More than anything, the 2018 aerokit really allows you to follow the car in front so much better than this year’s car,” said Servia. “No joke, at Mid-Ohio Turn 1, I have never ever been able to follow someone that close, not at the speeds we’re turning in. “But in the new car, I was on Montoya’s gearbox – literally, right there – and as we approached Turn 1, I thought, ‘Oh ****, I’ve got to try and do this but I’m probably going to go straight off.’ But no, I was able to stick with him all the way through. Then when Juan followed me, … [Read more...] about “Awesome” 2018 IndyCar aerokit will improve racing, says Servia

Williams retains Aitken as reserve F1 driver for 2021

· March 4, 2021 ·

Aitken filled in at the team for regular driver George Russell at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix, who had in turn substituted for Lewis Hamilton after the reigning world champion contracted COVID-19 ahead of the second race in Bahrain. Finishing 16th, Aitken had recovered from a small crash at the final corner in which he dislodged his front wing, which brought out a safety car - ironically causing a chain of events that contrived to deny Russell a maiden F1 victory. Aitken also took part in an FP1 session in 2020 at the Styrian Grand Prix and will once again perform FP1 duties later in the season as he continues his development work with the Williams team, having also driven in the end-of-season Abu Dhabi test. "After providing me with one of the most special moments of my career to date last year, I am absolutely delighted to continue with Williams in the position of reserve driver," said Aitken. "In my short time at Grove I have already found many friends, and a deep … [Read more...] about Williams retains Aitken as reserve F1 driver for 2021
