It was a rough week for two Texas teams near the top of the college basketball rankings, but another program from the Lone Star State continued to rise in the latest Associated Press poll. The University of Houston Cougars —who had been ranked No. 1 the last two weeks , and previously claimed the top spot in the poll for the first time in 39 years earlier this season—suffered a setback on Sunday with a 56-55 loss to unranked Temple. As a result, UH (18-2) fell to No. 3 in most recent rankings, which were unveiled Monday. No. 1 Purdue and No. 2 Alabama, the latter of which handed Houston one of its two losses back in December, were the only teams ranked ahead of the Cougars in the latest AP poll. Tennessee and Kansas State rounded out the top five, while Arizona, Virginia, UCLA and Kansas took the No. 6 through No. 9 spots, respectively. Texas seemed to have an opportunity to climb toward the top of the rankings last week, sitting at No. 7 with a top-12 showdown … [Read more...] about College basketball rankings: UH and Texas tumble, TCU climbs toward top 10

QBs Jalen Hurts, Patrick Mahomes to make NFL history in Super Bowl
There are no shortage of Texas connections in Super Bowl LVII, and there's no better place to start than the quarterback position. The Philadelphia Eagles' Jalen Hurts and Kansas City Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes are both former Texas high school football standouts. Hurts, a Houston native, played for his father at Channelview. Mahomes starred at Whitehouse, located just outside of Tyler, before taking his talents to Texas Tech. Mahomes is no stranger to the Super Bowl stage—he won MVP honors for his role in the Chiefs' victory in the 2019 championship, with Kansas City coming up short against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the following year's title game. Hurts, meanwhile, is set join Mahomes as one of the youngest players in NFL history to make their Super Bowl debut. At 24 years, six months, five days, he is set to be the seventh-youngest quarterback to start a Super Bowl, and would be the fourth-youngest to hoist the Lombardi Trophy if the Eagles are able to pull … [Read more...] about QBs Jalen Hurts, Patrick Mahomes to make NFL history in Super Bowl

Houston Cougars stay atop college basketball rankings
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 Houston and Kansas remained firmly atop The Associated Press men's college basketball poll Monday after a record weekend of Top 25 losses, while Florida Atlantic took advantage of the chaos to crack the ranking for the first time in school history. Eleven teams in the Top 25 went down on Saturday, tying a record that has stood for nearly 12 years, while Connecticut and Marquette also lost on Sunday to give the AP poll one of its biggest shakeups in recent history. The banged-up Cougars, who had to fight off South Florida to avoid their own upset loss, watched their advantage over the Jayhawks shrink ever so slightly, pulling in 34 of 60 first-place votes from a national media panel. Kansas received 23 votes to remain second while Purdue picked up the remaining three to stay third. Alabama remained at No. 4 while UCLA, riding a 13-game winning streak, … [Read more...] about Houston Cougars stay atop college basketball rankings
College basketball bracketology update: 4 Texas teams firmly in field
There's a strong case to be made that Texas is now the epicenter of college basketball , with Houston holding the No. 1 spot in both major polls , UT sitting in the top 10 and two other teams from the Lone Star State currently ranked. Obviously, none of the regular-season hype will matter if these teams aren't able to get it done in March— Baylor's 2021 squad is the state's only men's basketball national champion since Texas Western (now known as UTEP) won it all with a historic 1966 run . But according to recent bracketology projections, Texas programs and their fans should feel good about how the 2023 NCAA tournament is shaping up. Both ESPN's Joe Lunardi and CBS Sports' Jerry Palm —who are widely regarded among the top bracketologists in college basketball—released their latest projections earlier this week. UH , Texas, TCU and Baylor are all comfortably in the field, falling somewhere between No. 1 and No. 5 seeds, while a surging Texas A&M made its way into … [Read more...] about College basketball bracketology update: 4 Texas teams firmly in field

It is the most powerful and most hardcore version of the popular hatchback, which also happens to be the fastest VW R model around the Nurburgring. The Golf R is one of our all-time favorite hot hatches but which of its three generations is best? There’s no better way to find out than a direct drag race. These are no ordinary Golfs , though. Each one of these performance hatches has been heavily modified with hardware and software upgrades. Starting with the oldest of the trio, the Golf R MK6 comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with Stage 3 modifications, giving it a peak output of 450 horsepower (335 kilowatts). The improvements over the factory four-cylinder mill include new turbochargers, injectors, intercooler, exhaust system, high-pressure fuel pump, and many more. The result is a vehicle that looks somewhat subtle but hides a lot of power under the hood. Gallery: Volkswagen Golf R 20th … [Read more...] about VW Golf R Drag Race Is A Clash Of Three Generations

Slotkin preps Senate run after winning tough reelection bid
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 LANSING, Mich.. (AP) — Just three months ago, Rep. Elissa Slotkin was one of the most vulnerable Democrats in Washington, fighting an expensive campaign for reelection in a Michigan district that Republicans were sure they could retake. That was all a distant memory recently as Slotkin sat beaming next to Sen. Debbie Stabenow at a Lansing luncheon commemorating Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Fresh off a surprisingly comfortable 5 percentage-point victory, Slotkin was eager to praise Stabenow, the dean of Michigan Democrats, whose Senate seat is suddenly open after the four-term senator announced her plans to retire. “She knows what it takes to win and she is not going to let her seat flip when she leaves,” Slotkin said of Stabenow in an interview. “She feels, I think, very connected to making sure her legacy is upheld by passing the torch to someone who can win it.” … [Read more...] about Slotkin preps Senate run after winning tough reelection bid
