Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. jumped after saying it's likely to announce a deal to spin off or sell a piece of its Starz cable network in September, with potential partners also showing interest in the company's film and TV studios. Shares surged 11% to $10.71 at 10:10 a.m. in New York, valuing the media company at about $2.3 billion. Lions Gate has been working with advisers this year to sell a stake in Starz, known for shows like "Power" and "Outlander." Executives have argued that Wall Street is undervaluing the company in its current structure. Lions Gate is one of the last remaining independent studios after tech giants and larger companies snapped up its competitors. "The structure that we're considering has become broader," Lions Gate Vice Chairman Michael Burns said on an earnings call Thursday. "As always, our priority is to create significant shareholder value." The $8.5 billion sale of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer to Amazon.com last year helped spur interest and give … [Read more...] about Lions Gate surges as Starz deal talks widen to include studio

NYC mayor slams Texas governor for busing migrants in test of sanctuary cities
(Bloomberg) -- New York City Mayor Eric Adams blasted Greg Abbott for using migrants as “political pawns” after the Texas governor bused a group of 50 people to the city on Friday. Abbott, who has been sending state-sponsored busloads of migrants to Washington, D.C. for months, said he wanted to test New York’s commitment to being a “sanctuary city.” “His continued use of human beings as political pawns is disgusting, and an embarrassing stain on the state of Texas,” said Adams spokesperson Fabien Levy in a statement. Adams later called Abbott’s actions “despicable” at an unrelated press appearance. Abbott sent out a press release on Friday morning announcing that Texas had sent what he called the first bus of migrants to New York City’s Port Authority station. “I hope he follows through on his promise of welcoming all migrants with open arms so that our overrun and overwhelmed border towns can find relief,” Abbott said of Adams. Television footage from Fox News appeared to show a … [Read more...] about NYC mayor slams Texas governor for busing migrants in test of sanctuary cities
$3.5M Palm Springs home with Moroccan flair hits the market
A unique two-story home in Palm Springs, CA , looks a bit like a riad you would find in the Moroccan desert. Listed for $3,498,000, this Wallace Neff –designed home dates to the 1930s. “It used to be part of the Singer sewing machine estate. This part of the house was actually the gardener's cottage,” explains listing agent Sandra Quinn , with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices. “It was one of the first houses in the desert to have a second story on it. Nobody ever had two floors.” To preserve the views, two-story homes can no longer be built in the Tennis Club neighborhood, Quinn says. But this property is grandfathered in and it's located just a couple of blocks from downtown. The larger 10-bedroom Singer estate and the former gardener’s cottage were split into separate parcels in 1957. “That's when the owners made it more of Moorish Moroccan design. But there are several things in the house that you can see in the old original pictures from the '30s, so it's … [Read more...] about $3.5M Palm Springs home with Moroccan flair hits the market
