KYIV, Ukraine - Russian officials said Tuesday that a counterterrorism operation was underway in the western region of Belgorod, which borders Ukraine, after anti-Russian militias fighting on Ukraine's side in the war mounted an attack on a border post and on an office of the Federal Security Service, or FSB. The governor of Belgorod, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said Tuesday that one person had died and eight people were injured. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday the cross-border attack was an attempt by Ukraine to distract attention from Russia's seizure of Bakhmut, the long-embattled city in eastern Ukraine that Russia claimed this week to have finally captured. After previous incidents, including drone strikes and an armed incursion in the Bryansk region, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered officials to tighten security in Belgorod and other regions adjacent to Ukraine, but the new attack showed Russia is still incapable of protecting the border zone. Russia extends detention of US journalist Evan Gershkovich by 3 months
MOSCOW (AP) — A Russian court on Tuesday extended the arrest of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich by three months, Russian news agencies reported. Gershkovich, a 31-year-old American citizen, was ordered held until Aug. 30. He had been arrested in March on espionage charges on a reporting trip in Russia. He, his employer and the U.S. government have denied the charges. Tuesday’s pre-trial hearing wasn’t announced in advance, and the entire case has been wrapped in secrecy. Russian authorities haven’t detailed what — if any — evidence they have gathered to support the espionage charges. Various legal proceedings have been closed to the media. No details immediately emerged about whether Gershkovich or U.S. Embassy representatives attended Tuesday's hearing or what was said. Tass said the session was closed because the reporter was accused of possession of “secret materials.” One Russian news agency, Interfax, quoted a court official as saying Gershkovich's … [Read more...] about Russia extends detention of US journalist Evan Gershkovich by 3 months
Biden picks new National Security Agency head, key to support of Ukraine, defense of US elections
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden has chosen a new leader for the National Security Agency and U.S. Cyber Command, a joint position that oversees much of America's cyber warfare and defense. Air Force Lt. Gen. Timothy Haugh, the current deputy commander of Cyber Command, would replace Army Gen. Paul Nakasone, who has led both organizations since May 2018 and was expected to step down this year, according to a notice sent by the Air Force this week and confirmed by a person familiar with the announcement. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss personnel matters not yet made public. If confirmed, Haugh will take charge of highly influential U.S. efforts to bolster Ukraine's cybersecurity and share information with Ukrainian forces fighting Russia's invasion. He will also oversee programs to detect and stop foreign influence and interference in American elections, as well as those targeting criminals behind ransomware attacks that have shut down hospital systems … [Read more...] about Biden picks new National Security Agency head, key to support of Ukraine, defense of US elections

Denmark, a member of NATO, has purchased dozens of American-made F-16s since the 1970s and has indicated it is open to the possibility of providing Ukraine with some. “The two leaders will review our efforts as NATO allies and close partners to strengthen transatlantic security and bolster economic prosperity,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement. As hold on Bakhmut slips, Ukrainian forces push to encircle city
KOSTYANTYNIVKA, Ukraine - Ukrainian forces have been reduced to small footholds in the devastated eastern city of Bakhmut, which despite its limited strategic importance has emerged as the war's bloodiest battlefield. But they have made gains on the Russian flanks, in a move to encircle the city and extend the fight there, according to Ukrainian officials and military personnel in the field. "I'm in the trenches. We've fortified ourselves in the positions" that Russia once held, Yuriy, a soldier in the Ukrainian Army's Fifth Separate Assault Brigade, wrote in a text message from a position to the south of Bakhmut, near the village of Klishchiivka. He spoke on the condition of anonymity for security reasons. "Around us are a lot of dead Russians," he said. Ukraine still holds slivers of the city, including the area around what has become a landmark of Ukraine's last redoubt: a destroyed sculpture of a Soviet MiG fighter jet, according to multiple military personnel involved in … [Read more...] about As hold on Bakhmut slips, Ukrainian forces push to encircle city
Germany’s ‘China City’ doesn’t want you to call it that anymore
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 DUISBURG, Germany - Trains laden with containers of clothes and solar panels straight from China still trundle into the station here about five times a day, but other plans to forge links between this German rust-belt city and Beijing have ground to a halt. Duisburg's aspirations of using Chinese tech giant Huawei to modernize its administration, schools and traffic systems are on ice. Construction of a Chinese business hub on the Rhine River has been abandoned, and embarrassment hangs in the air. Local officials who not long ago touted Duisburg as Germany's "China City" say that's not a tagline they want to use anymore. "Public opinion has changed, political opinion has changed," said Markus Teuber, the China commissioner for Duisburg, the sole German city to have such a post. The shift in this western German city of 500,000 mirrors a broader … [Read more...] about Germany’s ‘China City’ doesn’t want you to call it that anymore

Trump’s freewheeling, stream-of-consciousness speaking style draws legal attention amid probes
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump speaks about his legal woes in a way that would make most defense attorneys wince. A recent sampling: In a March interview on Fox News, the former president said he had “the right to take” classified documents with him to his Florida resort and wouldn’t say he hadn’t looked at the records since leaving office. During a CNN town hall this month, Trump said he told a Georgia elections official “you owe me” votes in the 2020 election. At the same town hall on May 10 he insulted a female writer as a “wack job” — only a day after that same woman, E. Jean Carroll, won a $5 million judgment against him in a civil suit alleging defamation and sexual assault. On Monday, Carroll amended a lawsuit to hold him liable for the town hall remarks. Trump, the leading contender for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, has never hesitated to … [Read more...] about Trump’s freewheeling, stream-of-consciousness speaking style draws legal attention amid probes
