Lynn Elber Associated Press Published 7:04 AM EDT Oct 24, 2018 Los Angeles – “To Kill a Mockingbird,” a coming-of-age story about racism and injustice, overpowered wizards and time travelers to be voted America’s best-loved novel by readers nationwide. The 1960 book by Harper Lee emerged as No. 1 in PBS’ “The Great American Read” survey, whose results were announced Tuesday on the show’s finale. More than 4 million votes were cast in the six-month-long contest that put 100 titles to the test. Books that were published as a series counted as a single entry. The other top-five finishers in order of votes were Diana Gabaldon’s “Outlander” series about a time-spanning love; J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” boy wizard tales; Jane Austen’s romance “Pride and Prejudice”; and J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” fantasy saga. Turns out the contest was a … [Read more...] about ‘Mockingbird’ chosen as America’s best-loved novel
Europeans have a knack for designing some of the best-looking fastback-bodied cars. Which one is your favorite? For me, it's the Maserati Khamsin. It's a fairly obscure two-door, V8-powered grand touring car built in the 1970s. Most people probably prefer the Ghibli in terms of styling, but the Khamsin's unique offset hood vent and in-glass taillights really do it for me. The classic profile and fine Italian craftsmanship are just bonuses. Khamsins rarely pop up for sale, but when they do, people are willing to pay big money. When it comes to cheap, fun cars, buyers have a ton of options. $30,000 can get you a ton of performance and enjoyment in today's market. Which new car do you think provides the most fun for under $30,000?I hate to be cliché, but I think the new Mazda MX-5 Miata is still the best affordable new car in terms of fun. Despite the apparent onslaught of tiny turbocharged engines and electric vehicles, there's still a swath of new V8-powered cars out there that make a ton of power. Which is your favorite? The first car that comes to mind for me is the Ferrari GTC4Lusso T. The 602-horsepower twin-turbo 3.9-liter V8 version of Ferrari's four-seat grand touring car is actually the lower-spec version, dwarfed by the all-wheel drive V12-powered Lusso. Still, over 600 horsepower going to the rear wheels is more than enough thrust for me. And even though the Lusso T is turbocharged, it still makes a healthy V8 growl. Haas have continued to make a good impression at the start of the season with Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean both qualifying inside the top 10 at Albert Park. Magnussen and Grosjean qualified in P6 and P7 respectively for the relatively young American outfit, starting their third season in Formula 1, but both drivers will move up a place each due to a three-place grid penalty for Daniel Ricciardo, who moves down to P8. It is the best-ever qualifying performance from Haas, and Magnussen is beaming with pride over the team's display. “It's a great way to start,” said Magnussen. “We have a good package here this weekend. “We were anxious to see after Barcelona how it would be on a different track – different conditions, different temperature etc – and again the car delivered. It was very, very good – very consistent and fast. “I’m incredibly proud of the team for the job they've done over the winter,” he … [Read more...] about Haas ‘proud’ of best-ever qualifying performance
