Regardless of how the all-new 2019 BMW X5 stacks against its predecessor, automakers will always be more interested in how new models are perceived within their specific segments. The X5 needs to worry less about the past and more about the likes of the Audi Q7, Volvo XC90 and Porsche Cayenne. Why you ask? Sales, of course. Two of these three models (the Q7 and the XC90) have ran almost neck and neck with the old X5 in European sales, while the race has have been reasonably close in North America too. The current generation of the XC90 might be the safest car of all time, or at least the safest model that doesn’t come with a roll cage, five-point harness, and racing seats. And according to new research, the XC90 hasn’t killed anyone after 14 years on British roads. That’s impressive, considering that 54,000 XC90s have been sold in Britain since the model’s introduction in 2002. Here’s more from The Sunday Times: Thatcham Research, which tests new cars for safety, analysed Government records based on police accident reports, and compared them with data from car insurers, and found no record of anyone having been killed in Volvo’s largest SUV. [...] Matthew Avery, director of research at Thatcham, said that the car’s safety record stood out for being unblemished: “Often when a vehicle is new, you don’t see fatalities, as it takes time for models to build up sales numbers. But we have around 14 years’ history of the XC90, … [Read more...] about The Volvo XC90 Hasn’t Killed Anyone In Britain In 14 Years

Tweet TweetIn the automotive industry, whenever you think of safety, generally the name Volvo springs to mind, and for good reasons too. The car maker has always been a keen adept of safety features, and the new XC90 SUV will be no different. One of the newer features to be installed is Volvo’s Pedestrian Detection in Darkness, a system with a self explanatory name. When a pedestrian is detected in low light situations, a signal will be displayed to the driver, and if he doesn’t react in time, the car will even brake before hitting said pedestrian. The XC90 model will also be fitted with a Road Edge and Barrier Detection with Steer Assist. Again, the name says it all. The system will not only detect the edge of any road, marked or otherwise, it will also apply corrections to the steering to keep you from going off it.
