The past few years of rallying were dominated by Volkswagen. Before that, it was all about Citroën. But back in the 1990s, Mitsubishi was king of the hill. Though it didn’t win as many constructors’ titles as its arch-rival Subaru, Mitsubishi won four back-to-back drivers titles in the World Rally Championship between 1996 and ’99. And that’s not even counting all the local, national, and regional titles it took in that same era. These days, of course, Mitsubishi is all about crossovers. But if you remember when it was a juggernaut in rallying, your opportunity could be staring you in the face right now. It’s a 1990 Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 Group A rally car. It’s not a top-tier Lancer Evo (like the ones that would follow). But it did win the Rallye Côte d’Ivoire Bandama that year, which gives it a bit of provenance to go with its rough-and-tumble build and appearance. And best of all, it could be yours. One of only 5,000 examples that … [Read more...] about Relive Mitsubishi’s Glory Days In This 1990 Galant VR-4 Group A Rally Car

Austin, who is surprisingly from Texas, has a BMW that he wants to sell and use the proceeds for something that he can transform into a machine that’s part daily driver and part rally-racer. This is a goal we can all support, so what car should he buy? (Welcome back to What Car Should You Buy? Where we give real people real advice about buying cars. Do you want us to help you find a car? Submit your story on our form.) Here is the scenario: I live in Texas and I drive a big, fancy BMW 5 series. It’s fine, but I’m looking to get into rallycross, so I would like to sell that car and get something that that is more suitable for racing in the dirt. I would prefer a rear-wheel-drive or an all-wheel-drive car, but it must have a manual transmission. I like hatchbacks and wagons and I don’t mind if it is over 10 or 15 years old as long as it is reliable. It also has to be something I can daily drive to work in between the races. In terms of budget, I can spend up … [Read more...] about I Want To Sell My BMW And Replace It With A Rally Car! What Car Should I Buy?
It was over a year ago that we first caught wind of this Renault Megane rally car project. That’s when stunt driver Guerlain Chicherit first revealed his plans for the World Rallycross Championship. He showcased it during a pre-season test session late last month, but the car was still covered in camouflage. Now he and his partners have revealed the machine in full. And it looks pretty awesome. Designed as much for “show” as for “go,” this Megane RX was developed and built not by Renaultsport, but by Prodrive. The British motorsport consulting firm has that helped Mini and Subaru develop its victorious rally machines. It’s also the same company that effectively runs Aston Martin‘s racing department, and launched Honda’s previous F1 team. Its latest project takes the fourth-generation Renault Megane and transforms it for rallycross duty. The specially crafted rally car is powered by a 2.0-liter turbo four developed by Prodrive to meet the … [Read more...] about RS Goes RX As Prodrive Reveals Chicherit’s New Megane Rally Car
It’s an usually warm spring day in Tokyo. After a few days of winter refusing to relinquish the cold weather, we suddenly experienced temperatures in the high teens, or the mid-60s if Fahrenheit is your jam. Either way, I’m standing at an intersection in the Tsukiji district of Tokyo, famous for having the world’s largest fish market. But I’m not here to bid on tuna—I’m here to meet a man called Junya Matsushita and his Subaru. Not just any Subaru, either. After a few minutes waiting I hear a rumble, and then spot a bright speck of blue heading my way. It’s Junya and his 1998 Subaru Impreza S5 WRC STI. Neither of us are familiar with the Tsukiji area, but I’ve seen a nice spot to take photos of his car next to some old houses, so we try our luck. there It doesn’t take long for us to realize it wasn’t the best idea as large trucks were constantly driving by, presumably with some fishy cargo. We decide to abandon this plan and … [Read more...] about This Guy Converted A Subaru Race Car Into His Street-Legal Daily Driver And It’s A Riot
Subaru has dominated rallying (at least in America) for the longest time, but there are all sorts of other unlikely cars that have been transformed into rally machines over the years. Which one is your favorite?Mine would have to be the last-generation Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Finnish race firm Mäkelä Auto Tuning took a coupe and turned it into a full-on rally car through the FIA's R-GT class, and it looks amazing. Moreover, it's one of the best-sounding race cars I've ever heard. Take a listen. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below Now we'd like to know: Which unlikely rally car do you think is the coolest? It doesn't have to be based on a sports car like the Vantage, either—it could be something completely different, if that's what you're into. Your choice just has to be something you wouldn't normally see on a rally stage. Let us know in the comments below. … [Read more...] about What’s the Coolest Unlikely Rally Car?
Chances are you’ve already heard of the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2. A smaller alternative to the high-speed desert-crushing Ford F-150 Raptor, it features a handful of fantastic off-road features and advanced suspension tech perfect for bombing down your nearest desert flatland. Here in the Northeast, where Road & Track’s online presence is based, we don’t have much desert flatland. But you know what we do have? Access to 600 acres of snow-covered New Hampshire backroads at one of the greatest rally schools in the country. Here’s how the ZR2 fared. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below Our journey started at the Road & Track offices in midtown Manhattan, the heart of New York City. Our destination, Team O’Neil Rally School, was just six hours and 335 miles north. A road trip was in order, and the ZR2 turned out to be the perfect companion. From the front, the ZR2 makes its off-road chops known. The shaved bumper and sloping skidplate give tons of … [Read more...] about The Chevy Colorado ZR2 Is a Rally Car in Disguise
Flush with cash in October 2001, just before the dot-com bubble burst, I went to an Audi dealer to buy an S4 Avant. Perhaps it was my Alice Donut T-shirt and camo shorts, but I couldn’t get a salesperson to even look at me, let alone give me a test-drive. I’d read a review in our sister publication Automobile (by none other than Jamie “NVH” Kitman) stating not only that the new-for-the-2002-model-year Subaru WRX was their Automobile of the Year, but also that the rough and ready, bug-eyed, rally-based bruiser had performance akin to a Porsche 911 4S. A boxer engine metaphor taken too far, perhaps, but the review got me thinking, and I took my tech boom dollars a few doors down to the Subaru dealer. An hour or so later I drove away in a black WRX wagon (base price $24,520) that was about 20 grand less than the Audi. Good thing, too, as I got mass laid off a month later and never would have been able to keep a near-$50K S4. Life is a funny thing, as I just drove … [Read more...] about 2018 Subaru WRX STI Type RA First Drive
While it’s generally the Impreza-shaped rally stuff that grabs all the attention, we mustn’t forget that it was the Legacy that first put Subaru on the WRC map. Although it was retired and replaced with the Impreza before it was able to snag a championship, the Prodrive-built car’s results in the top flight of rallying improved steadily from its 1990 debut, culminating in a win and several podiums in the 1993 season. This particular Legacy RS is one of the Group A-spec machines Subaru ran that year, piloted by Ari Vatanen and later driven by Richard Burns during the 1995 Bettega Memorial Rallysprint. It was acquired by the Richard Burns Collection in 2008, after which is was painstakingly returned to its original Group A spec by Autosportif Engineering. It’s not entirely original: while much of the mechanical bits and pieces have been retained, a whole new bodyshell was created using the old technical drawings. It has kept its original chassis plate though, … [Read more...] about Of Course You Want This Group A Subaru Legacy Rally Car
If you want to buy a 1993 Subaru Legacy, you should probably budget around a grand. Tops. That’s if you can even find one for sale. This one, though, is expected to sell at auction for well over a hundred times that. But then which car, with names like Richard Burns and Ari Vatanen among its previous ‘owners’, wouldn’t? It doesn’t take a super sleuth to identify this as a very special Subaru. Not least because of the blue’n’yellow 555 livery that the Impreza went on to make its own. Still unsure of the credibility of buying a Legacy rally car, not an Impreza? Colin McRae’s upward trajectory includes a British Rally Championship title in a Legacy RS as a fresh-faced 23-year-old. His first ever World Rally win was also in one of these, netting the Legacy its first ever WRC victory at the same time. The history of this specific car is quite cool, too. Produced in 1993, it’s an example of the Legacy in its twilight … [Read more...] about The world’s most exciting Subaru Legacy is for sale
Click to enlargeSubaru will be debuting the Subaru Viziv Performance STI Concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2018 this week. The show car will be based on the Viziv Performance Concept from the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show, but with STI’s touch. From the teaser image above, we can see a new and more aggressive front bumper with a red painted air intakes, STI badging on the traditional spots (grille and fog lamp location) and red accents (in STI’s trademark pinkish shade, we hope, although it’s not so clear here) throughout the car. The latter can be seen underlining the front grille, lip, side skirts and rear wing. Yes, there’s a huge rear wing.Subaru says that the STI-fettled Viziv Performance boasts improved aerodynamics for better stability. There are no details on what’s under the concept’s hood. Subaru will also display the Levorg STI Sport, BRZ STI Sport, 2017 BRZ GT300, 2016 WRX STI NBR Challenge and the WRX STI S208 at the tuning show, along with some … [Read more...] about Subaru Viziv Performance STI for Tokyo Auto Salon
