Rockwell has found himself on an urgent mission. He has to find sand - tons of it - and fast. Property owners in a picturesque beachside community just south of Daytona Beach hired him to buttress their homes with new sand after the Category 1 storm - the second cyclone to hit the state in the span of six weeks. Swimming pools, porches and even entire houses crashed into the ocean below when the sand beneath them eroded. But these days the usual sources for sand - nearby underwater mounds and healthy beaches in other parts of the Sunshine State - are running low. What can be found is pricey. Rockwell estimates each house needs at least 275 dump truckloads pushed underneath to be saved - … [Read more...] about Florida beaches were already running low on sand. Then Ian and Nicole hit.

Otmar Szafnauer believes an Alpine driver line-up comprising Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly will be both “more experienced” and “faster” than if Oscar Piastri had taken the drive as planned. Formula 2 champion and Alpine junior Piastri had been set to partner Ocon for 2023 after Fernando Alonso announced his departure from the team at the end of the season, replacing Sebastian Vettel at Aston Martin next year. But it later transpired that Piastri had already signed an agreement to race for McLaren in 2023 as Daniel Ricciardo’s replacement, with both teams going to Formula 1’s Contract Recognition Board to fight over the young Australian’s signature – with the CRB eventually finding in McLaren’s favour. This led Alpine needing to find another driver to partner Ocon and, despite having several drivers behind the wheel in a private test in Budapest, they were able to secure the services of Pierre Gasly from AlphaTauri, ending his contract with Red Bull a year early to get him to … [Read more...] about Otmar Szafnauer: Ocon and Gasly a better Alpine pairing than Ocon and Piastri
Listen to this article Schubert Motorsport enjoyed a dream maiden DTM campaign in 2022 as it swept to the drivers' crown with Sheldon van der Linde and collected the teams' title too. New to the series, its control Michelin tyres and the BMW M4 GT3 that replaced the venerable M6 GT3 this year, it had a mammoth learning curve to get on terms with teams who had enjoyed continuity from the DTM's first season with GT3 rules in 2021. But in van der Linde and series returnee Philipp Eng , it had two drivers with DTM race-winning pedigree, while a two-car parallel programme in ADAC GT Masters helped to level off its M4 learning curve. Although that series runs on Pirelli rubber, the Italian company's new DHF range means "the difference between these two tyres is not so big anymore", according to Schubert team manager and van der Linde's DTM engineer Marcel Schmidt. "I would say maybe 70-80% of the baseline set-up work is the same," he says. "That's helped quite a lot to … [Read more...] about How BMW’s new “freestyle” flagbearers swept to 2022 DTM glory
Lewis Hamilton took his second victory in eight days at the Bahrain Grand Prix after holding off a strong challenge from team mate Nico Rosberg. In an action packed race that thrilled viewers, some of the drivers could be heard getting rather excitable themselves over the team radio. Not all of them were happy with how the race developed, particularly Nico Hulkenberg who agitated for his team to report one of his rivals to race director Charlie Whiting . Esteban Gutierrez was taken by surprise when Pastor Maldonado flipped his car upside down at the first corner. He wasn’t the only driver to be infuriated by the Lotus pilot, Jean-Eric Vergne complaining “he tried to kill me” earlier in the race. But the fight at the front was all about the Mercedes team mates. Paddy Lowe reminded both of his battling drivers to bring their cars home in one piece , but once the team’s second consecutive one-two finish was secured, Lowe was quick to praise his championship leading … [Read more...] about 2014 Bahrain Grand Prix team radio transcript · RaceFans
NEW YORK - As the triple Tony-winning choreographer of "Hamilton," "In the Heights" and "Bandstand," Andy Blankenbuehler has found artistic glory, satisfaction and success beyond imagining. But the story he burned to tell, the one that's gripped his imagination for more than a decade, is about getting everything you want yet realizing it's not enough. He also wanted to tell this through dance, his most cherished language. Yet as Blankenbuehler looked around the musical-theater world, he couldn't find the inspiration he was craving. Where were the new dance-driven shows, he wondered - the ones that put dancers first and let dancing tell the story? "There's a lot of storytelling ability in dance, but in musical theater, people champion words first," he says on a recent evening at the off-Broadway MCC Theater, a couple of hours before the curtain rises on his new show, "Only Gold." "And so many times as a dancer, you don't feel integral. You don't feel like you are helping the story … [Read more...] about ‘Hamilton’ choreographer couldn’t find a show he liked. So he wrote one.

(AP) — Below the vaulted dome and dark wood beams of a church in Colorado Springs, a gay men's choir rehearsed for a concert that's taken on new meaning after a LGBTQ night club became the site of a gruesome shooting that killed five and wounded 17. “There is no peace on earth, I said," the chorus sang. “For hate is strong and mocks the song of peace on earth.” The old lyrics that rang through the halls of the First Congregational Church were haunted by new memories of the Nov. 21 violence at Club Q — the sound of screams over club music, the sight of bullet wounds plugged by napkins and people pleading with their friends to keep breathing. In the 13 days since the shooting, Colorado Springs' LGBTQ community has worked to collect itself and forge ahead. Patrons of … [Read more...] about LGBTQ chorus in Colorado Springs unifies community with song
Listen to this article Toyota clinched its fourth successive crown in the WEC's top tier with a dominant run in the season-closing Bahrain race to win the Hypercar class. Brendon Hartley , Sebastien Buemi and Ryo Hirakawa took the title by finishing second behind the sister car shared by Jose Maria Lopez , Mike Conway and Kamui Kobayashi . Alpine was Toyota's only real rival in the championship fight this year, with Glickenhaus missing the final two rounds of the season and Peugeot not joining the championship until Monza in July. The two manufacturers went to the Bahrain decider level on points in the drivers' standings, but Toyota was never seriously threatened in the race as it romped to a 1-2 victory. Alpine was allowed to race its previous generation LMP1 car against Toyota's LMH-spec contender in 2022 as part of a special dispensation of rules by the WEC, with their relative pace governed by the series' Balance of Performance system. Asked if the … [Read more...] about Toyota denies it lacked “strong competition” in WEC title battle
Max Verstappen says it would not have been fair for him to hold up Charles Leclerc in an effort to help his team mate take second place in the championship. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Leclerc finished second behind Verstappen in today’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, securing the points he needed to end the season second in the championship ahead of Sergio Perez . During the final laps of the race Perez closed on second-place Leclerc, but finished 1.3 seconds behind the Ferrari. Verstappen said the team never asked him to slow down and delay Leclerc to assist Perez in his pursuit. “That is quite a tricky call to make,” he said. “You also don’t want to end up… of course you can possibly block. But I mean, is that fair racing? I think it’s not the nicest way going out of the season like that.” Perez had fresher tyres than Leclerc and seemed likely to catch him at one stage but lost time lapping Pierre Gasly and Alexander Albon, Verstappen pointed out. … [Read more...] about Verstappen says holding up Leclerc to help Perez would not have been “fair” · RaceFans
Mick Schumacher departed Haas after one last ticking-off from the team in Abu Dhabi – for performing post-race donuts. The German driver is being replaced by Nico Hulkenberg with immediate effect, starting with the tyre test taking place at Yas Marina this week as his more experienced compatriot immediately gets his feet under the table. Schumacher has paid the price for a 2022 season, his second in F1, in which he was unable to make the anticipated progress, scoring points only twice – and even more significantly, costing the team a packet with a series of crashes. He was also in the wars during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, running into the back of Nicholas Latifi on lap 39 as the duo renewed their 2021 duel at the same venue – only this time, without such dramatic ramifications. Able to keep going despite the collision, Schumacher went on to complete his Haas swansong in 16th position – and it was afterwards that he was told off over team radio. Not for the crash, but for … [Read more...] about Mick Schumacher given dressing down after performing Abu Dhabi donuts
