Temperatures on Friday morning dropped below 23 Fahrenheit (-5 Celsius) in Santa Catarina state, covering several municipalities with a thin layer of snow. Earlier this week a fierce hailstorm scared residents of Rio's west zone. For many Brazilians, accustomed to more clement weather in the tropical South American country, such events are considered extreme. Earlier this week, authorities in Rio Grande do Sul, canceled soccer matches, closed public buildings early and suspended classes in schools and universities due to fears of major disruptions. TEXAS CITY — Miles inland from Galveston’s beaches and colorful vacation homes, a group of Black men dribble and jump on a covered basketball court, aiming for a chain-link net. Carver Park in Texas City, created during segregation, is considered the first African American county park in the state. It sits on land donated by descendants of freedmen who survived slavery and pioneered one of Texas’ oldest Black settlements, the footprint of which sits just a few blocks away. Until last year, the park sat at the heart of Galveston County’s Precinct 3 — the most diverse of the four precincts that choose the commissioners court, which governs the county along with the county judge. Precinct 3 was the lone seat in which Black and Hispanic voters, who make up about 38% of the county’s population, made up the majority of the electorate. The precinct sliced the middle of coastal Galveston County , stretching from the small city of Dickinson on the county’s northern end through … [Read more...] about A GOP power grab shatters 30 years of political progress for Black voters in Galveston County

It's not worth the effort This year could be the toughest yet for Prayut Chan-o-cha's administration although reasons abound why the prime minister will be able to sidestep traps and complete the government's four-year term in March next year, according to Democrat Party veteran, Thepthai Senpong. Thepthai: Only court stands in way Mr Thepthai, a former MP for Nakhon Si Thammarat, has stepped back from active political roles after he was stripped of his MP status by the Constitutional Court over his 2020 conviction for fraud in the 2014 election for the Nakhon Si Thammarat provincial administration organisation chief. However, he has managed to offer his opinion on unfolding, significant developments in politics. So, with a political storm looming large for Gen Prayut in the coming months, he did not pass up the opportunity to take to Facebook to speak his mind. Last week, Mr Thepthai wrote that nothing stood in the way of Gen Prayut hanging around until the government … [Read more...] about It’s not worth the effort
